Hearbreaking to see the scrappers got in there and wrecked havoc glad you are still able to save all of those games. I can't wait to see them all up and running again!
The sad part about that is the scrappers probably got like 100 bucks combined for all the damage they did . That’s a generous estimate . The boards aren’t worth anything because those were before the days of using a lot of precious metals . What a waste .
The BZ should be relatively straightforward to bring back to life. The Sonic Asteroids is basically empty, but could be fixed up with guts from a standard Atari Asteroids.
Great story, way to work the long game and ferret them out. Tough luck with the tweaker damage but glad you all got to the, when you did. Nice work man!
A second run theater in Louisville KY called J-Town 4 had that same version of Asteroids, and was the only kind I knew of when I was knee high to a grasshopper until I got older and found the normal ones in other arcades around town.
It's always strange to find games manufactured for different markets (e.g., games built in the Atari Ireland factory, or domestic Japanese games) show up in the US. There's usually some kind of reason for it, like a shortage of US-market cabinets or an unscrupulous importer trying to circumvent licensing restrictions! Haha
Awesome! These amazing places still exist, unfortunately often tied up in legal issues or personal family issues. We got about 30 of our 50 games from a very interesting open air warehouse in north Louisiana that belonged to an elder operator that had passed away. Lots of really cool units. Cockpit red Baron, cabaret Tempest and Stargate. Sometimes we get lucky, and get a chance to pick up the pieces of the past that are waiting for us…⚡️👾⚡️

Lifelong Kanawha County resident, and I can tell you that at some point, all the arcades died off and never came back. There were attempts at retro gaming shops, but those also died off quickly. Someone keeps telling the gameroom operators that there's just no money here, and they can't help but listen. And then everyone's shocked when the kids pack up and leave, saying "There's nothing to DO here!". And then the bars with slot machines move in, along with all the meth dealers. I've heard there's a barcade, but it's over in Huntington, a College town, and I live nowhere near there, and it's just not cost-efficient to travel fifty miles to go to an arcade.

so which cabs were outright missing since the original find? Were the town council (or whomever your contact was) forthcoming in what the current state of affairs was in the building before you went there?
In the original video 6 years ago, we could see a Gyruss, Wizard of Wor, and Space Zap that were missing when we arrived... but the Space Firebird cabaret was a surprise find. The mayor got us some updated photos before we worked out a deal, and although we could tell that some of the games had been moved, it wasn't a comprehensive tour or anything.
