  • If you want to learn the basics to plastering and learn how to plaster your own walls then join The Plastering For Beginners welcome Course. It's a free plastering course ideal for anyone who wants to learn how to plaster: plasterersblueprint.clickfunn...
    Today's video I’m going to show you the full process to sponge floating a wall. This is a different way to start plastering and it’s becoming very popular amongst plasterers.
    I’ll walk you through the whole process and I’ll show you the exact steps you need to take to start sponge float plastering. It’s a very similar process to the traditional sense of plastering except you have the added step of using the sponge float.
    This provides you with a different finish and in my opinion, it provides a more consistent look to your walls. This video is ideal for anyone who wants to learn how to use a sponge float and also essential for people who have no knowledge of plastering a wall. This video shows you everything you need to start and is a guide to plastering for beginners
    I’ll also walk you through the exact tools you’ll need for the job.
    Here’s the list below:
    ---
    Marshalltown 14” Permashape Trowel - amzn.to/2MoJMB8
    Refina Superflex - amzn.to/2MpihHM
    Refina Plaziflex - amzn.to/2Mpkvae
    Nordstand mixer - amzn.to/2KHAvCc
    Refine Sponge Float - amzn.to/2Nd0Euk
    ---
    This video shows you everything you need to start plastering. If you liked the video please like and subscribe - subscribers are the life force of this channel so we would greatly appreciate it if you did.

      M. Loved your videos and the way you talk through the process, I’m new to this, have load of questions about plastering since there can be lot of different situation, but in this video I would like to know : Is there any stage that need to press the trowel really hard to flatten the plaster? Can’t really tell in the video when to use pressure or not. Thanks

    Wow... just wow... this guy is more than just a plasterer. He's taken his trade perfected it and now he's marketing his own company on utube. Makes me think i should do the the same, I've been in building industry for 20 years. I'm an accomplished builder, i cut my teeth on loft conversions mainly, but that involves a load of skills.... was thinking about starting a tool review channel a while back as most of the current ones aren't actually reviewed by trades on site. Well done mate, your a smart cookie.

      I agree I did a video on skimming with a sponge @ 10 years back, and he has shown exactly how its done the right way, notice how little water he uses compared to others, with or without a sponge the less water used for splashing the walls usually the more skilled the plasterer

      For an amateur to plaster a ceiling is a monumental task. By my time just after the war we were plastering on to plasterboard just think what a generation , or maybe two, before me had to cope with when the medium was wooden lath. I think that I might hve got dirty too.

    Great video! Ive had one go before around 8 months ago and did everything wrong. Rads on too high in house, had a coffee and cake break and didn't help that the plaster was out of date by 3 months 😆. I didn't realize at the time it had a use by date and it was going off straight away 🙄. Some how got an ok finish but not great. Purchased the plaster a while back and left it in the garage! Hopefully this time with the help of your video, I'll do an ok job? What's the rough timings for the first few stages? Big thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

    The speed skim used to smooth out the first coat, could that not be used to smooth out the second coat as its this outer top layer that would be visible and all the imperfection visible once the mist coat is on?

    Hi Blaine, Have you any videos on how you deal with suction as this massively varies on the makeup of the wall. Obviously I do the usual process of PVA but at times I still find some walls literally suck moisture immediately on applying the 1st coat. Recently I did two opposite walls as one hit. One wall previously painted took the usual 45 - 55 minutes to start going but the opposite wall being old plaster with no previous paint was going off straight away resulting in me racing to beat the clock. I managed to get the seconds coats on and finish the process, but under pressure which isn’t ideal. Just wondering if you have any top tips on reducing suction further other than just PVA.
    Cheers
    James

Thank you so much for your time in creating. I know this video is a bit old, but, if you see this, I'd love some help on a few questions. 1 - In general, to what degree to you believe your instruction and recommendations translate to the US? 2 - I see that the plaster you're using is brown. I'm an absolute rookie, but this surprised me. Is there a reason for brown plaster vs white plaster in this use case? Thank you in advance for any advice you can provide, @Plastering-For-Beginners!

    I know it’s a late reply but I’m just starting out how come you get a trowel line from the back end of the trowel is it cos you put more pressure at the front or does it just naturally do it. Spot on vids by the way👍

    So many diy people wanting to give it a go because it looks "easy" asking how long between coats etc props for wanting a go tbh but people forget to easy its a bit of an art and not half as easy as it looks! Same. Did my apprenticeship in 1985, 50 kg bags of browning mixed in a bath with a shovel applied to breeze block walls. Skimming was mixed with a stick and a plunger which consisted of a bicycle chain ring screwed/welded onto a wooden or metal T-bar. Trowels were a 13" marshall town or tyzak, not stainless and were like a lump of 3x2 until broken in which took about 4 months !!
      These youngsters don't know they're born with all these modern tools/mixers 🤣🤣

    • @allanfraser5410
      @allanfraser5410 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there was more to solid plastering than simply skimming on to plasterboard especially so if the walls were uneven. I would put on a band or strip of plaster across the wall as high as I could reach, - straighten or rule this out then check for plumb , then straighten again if needed . It was then a case of filling in the rest of the wall , hopefully the joiner had put on a ground rail, and ruling off using as your guide the ground rail and your strip along the top. The area at the top would be filled in and ruled off just like the bottom , using a stool to reach up. If there is no ground rail a straightened strip would have to be formed then and checked for plumb with the upper strip. In time the job was pretty straight forward.

    I did a plastering course a few month ago, have just completed my first living room walls and ceiling. Its a pretty decent effort. When I was taught, it was to to go left to right (for right handers) but start from the bottom, and work upwards. Is there any benefit doing it top down or just as long as it goes on? Cheers

    Hi, watched you using the speed skim on an earlier video, I must say I've been reluctant to try one even though the guy that taught me has suggested I try one, well, I'm ordering it today! great work, thoroughly enjoyed your videos, keep up the good work, pleasure to watch .. learning something new after doing this for 14 years!

    Hi blaine , do you use the speedskim after you apply the second coat as well ?. Do you think the speedskim could be used to close the plaster in after sponge floating, instead of the trowel ?.

    Going to use my ox speedskim for the first time this weekend can't wait sad I know but if it makes it easier. You ever done 3 coats say 5mm I got a Artex job to go over don't want to bond it if I can help it but I think I'm going to have to. Do you ever use a straight edge at the bottom so when the skirting board goes on its flush.Excellent video

      @michaelroach6957 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've done that a few times ( straight edge lightly over the skirting line), and received comment on how straight the walls were after wards.
      But mostly on old houses.

    ive been plastering for 15 too 16 years was a bit weary about doing this method my way of thinking was after all my hard work of 1st coat flatten 2nd coat flatten then to go through all my hard work with a sponge just couldn't get my head round it,jumped in a started with the sponge floating not looked back takes a lot of hard work out of the game plus get no tiger stripes or blistering just one uniformed finish,just want too say keep up your good work and thanks for the videos how you go through step by step, has long has you hit the plaster at the right times its a better finish and quicker result

    Nice work mate , tip for boxs , use masking tape to line out the boxs , couple taps when dry and they come out a treat no skim inside , on the cables or in the screw holes , would be nice if the sparks would tidy the cables away first though ! 😁

    • @PlasteringForBeginners
      @PlasteringForBeginners  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great tip, I'll give that a go. Cheers pal! Tell me about it - the sparks I encounter leave cables dangling up to 1 metre long! They're a nightmare sometimes!!

      It might be too much water, dodgy batch of plaster, heat or trowelling too early??? It could be anything pal. It can go wrong sometimes, I must admit!

    • @PlasteringForBeginners

      I think it actually gives you a bit more time but you have to be quick on the initial trowel after the sponging. That's the only part you could trip up on!

    Great video. Really liking your channel and have improved my plastering to no end. My father-in-law has been plastering for us and some of the latest results are... not great. The last room took me 2 days with two of us sanding the walls down. I'm now at a stage where I can plaster straighter, cleaner, smoother walls and therefore wanting to the rest myself. My question is, currently I have a bedroom where most the walls are really rough from the attempt he made to plaster them. Can I skim these straight off, or do I need to apply some form of bonding first?

    Great video again, so do you prefer the sponge method? And would you ever sponge float a ceiling? This video will defiantly help, I’ve been using a course sponge 😂 still came out good though especially if you let the plaster dry too much. Livens it up good and proper!

      Thanks mate, that means a lot to me! I like Sponge Floating but I'm always undecided on which method I prefer! I don't personally do it for ceilings though. I've never liked doing it for some strange reason but I know a lot of plasterers who do 👍

    Another great video. Thank You! I have never used spatula to flatten first coat..., I use spatula after sponge floating. Something new to try. And this last plastic trowel..., I am very interested what effect it does because so far I used Regina Superflex 2 as a finish.

      Hi mate! Great hearing from you again. I often use the Speedskim at the early stages because I find it gets the wall flatter from stage 1. Give it a try! Arr the Plaziflex is amazing pal - it leaves an amazing finish and they're so nice to use. I'd definately invest in one if I was you 👍

    I like how you said at the end "were all in it together" goes a long way that does - leaving it harder for the next guy to come along causes a lot of problems and is the main reason project go over budget and take too long.

    Thank you for the video I’ve been plastering a while and tried a sponge for the first time going to take some getting use to but I think the finish is better, I don’t know if you could help with some advice I did a job recently thought it was a good finish until they got there dewalt spot light and checked it at night. I was disappointed with the finish but don’t know how to replicate the light or how to get it that flat.

      Hi mate. It's called sideways glancing light and it's the best way to test your work - shine a strong LED light sideways along your wall and you'll get the same effect. It's horrible sometimes because it shows all your imperfections but it's the best way to know where your faults are at the time!
