  • Putting on chains is never fun! But it is so much worse if you don't use good practices because your chains can come loose, they can break, wrap around your axle, break your fender, or whatever!
This video is here to show you the basic good techniques that make your chains stay on your tire and work!
Here are the sections of the video:
1:02 6 Tips to make chaining up better
    1:28 Laying out your chains
3:35 Putting the chain on the tire
    5:30 Drive and re-tighten
7:00 What does the fully chained tire look like

It’s a good video. But in reality when it’s 20degrees outside, super snow, super ice and with a trailer attached it’s going to be about 100% harder and dangerous. Chains are another way for dispatch/ brokers to keep you moving despite the danger ahead. U can slip and fall while chaining up. A truck can crash into you while your in between tires. In my honest opinion it’s better to just park and reschedule. Watch the first episode of ice road truckers. You’ll understand my pov after that

I 100% agree. It's not worth it. And you have to drive really slow with the chains on.

That is fun isn't it? Not my original idea I must admit, saw it at The Great Salt Lake Truck Show and copied them.

Yep great video going over Donner this winter for a few trips so need to learn . I like how you roll and hook them on the top vs laying on the ground . Watch 4 and prefer the cleanest method …. Thanks

Great video but chains should go on the first axle, thats the first axle in the drive train and has more power.

How long does it take to put 4 tire chains on? It took me 1.5 hours to chain up and half and hour to chain down. Self taught.

What is the best way to lift the tire off the ground? Bottle jack? Tire ramp? Dunnage?

Lay a 2x6 on the ground, cut 2x4’s to space out crossbar rails . Lay chains on board and back the tires over the board . Lift chains up around the and hook at top .

There’s 2 sizes at the truck stop. I don’t recall the sizes but it’s the longer bungee

How often do you check the chains after on tire

    • @DDTruckDriver
      @DDTruckDriver  2 ปีที่แล้ว

If it is me and I am comfortable with my method for putting on chains I check them once because I know they can always come loose, if they are I tighten them and then I don't need to look at them again. I would suggest that if you move and then find they are very loose, you will need to tighten them, and then move again and check them again. Because my experience is when I install them they feel very tight, then I move and they feel a little loose, then I tighten them if I can and they will stay tight.
But if they are very loose after you move that would suggest you didn't get them tight enough to begin with and it is possible they won't get super tight on your first check and may need to check again.

Haha I don't love throwing 3-rails. In my opinion, if someone is watching this video it is because they need help learning how to put on a single chain. If they need 3-rail chains then they are going to need more practice than just this video. I threw 3-rails many times in the crude field. After getting fully chained up you have hung 400 lbs of iron!

Isn't the front axle the drive axle?

Depends on your truck. Check with the manufacturer or a dealer shop to be sure. Or check the next time you spin out on a gravel lot, lol.

Keep some 4x4 to raise the tire up. Saves time 🤷‍♂️
