  • It's winter sowing time! Such an easy project with great rewards. This year I am winter sowing Rudbeckia and Strawflowers because they gave me the best results last year. To read about other varieties that would work well with this method, I recommend purchasing the Cool Flowers book by Lisa Mason Ziegler. You can purchase it here:

    I hope the seed starting mix works for you. I didn’t have good luck with that but had better luck with the heavier potting soil. I do about 30-50 milk jugs and 6 trays in bins with holes… it’s awesome to grow hundreds of plants without grow lights… but also don’t have a business at the moment so I can wing it. My one cut flower garden is 50 feet long and whatever makes it goes in .

    It's better to do them a bit deeper, just below the handle at least 5 inches of potting medium, and potting mix is definitely better, it holds the moisture much better!

    Good luck on your winter sowing! I'm going to definitely be growing more strawflowers & other flowers for drying this year! I regretted not saving & drying more last year!

    I'm in NW Iowa, extremely dry here. I've never done this, but can't wait to try! Thanks

      Definitely make yours deeper and use potting mix. Seed mix dries out super fast!

    Greetings from Des Moines, Ia! I have really been enjoying your videos 💕 wanted to know if you have heard about “the single seed challenge”? It sounds fun! Thought you and your viewers might enjoy. I saw this idea on Flower Hill Farm.

    Thanks Christina, you have inspired a new idea for me :) I do have a question about pricing bouquets? If you have another video, please direct me. How do you determine the price per stem that you include in your bouquets? Thank you!

    • @SunshineFlora
      @SunshineFlora  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can look up the price per stem amount online for market sales. That is what I used last summer

    Oh no the seed packet I bought for strawflowers said to bury them 1/4”! I’ll have to open the jug and surface sow some seeds.

      I would follow the directions that your seed packets says. They could be different t

    Don't be so quick to say zinnias would never work! I haven't done it but I know several people who winter sow tomatoes and peppers 🤷‍♀️ they wait a little longer I think, more like 6-8 weeks before last frost. So it might be worth a try? Idk 🤷‍♀️

    That is stupid just get a container with a lid it does the same thing

    • @SunshineFlora
      @SunshineFlora  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes it does! You can use about anything - milk jugs are easily available for a lot of people and free!

    • @SunshineFlora
      @SunshineFlora  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I should add, you do want to make sure it’s a tall container so the seedlings have room to grow height-wise.

    • @jenniferwolford4646
      @jenniferwolford4646 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well it's a stupid thing thousands of us growers use. 🤷‍♀️

      A grower last year used $store containers, they were bigger and ended up being too heavy once filled with wet soil. The milk jugs have handles and are easy to move around, but if you still prefer wasting money on a product that will degrade in the sun all too quickly and then end up in a landfill, I have one question for you. "Why?"

      Wow Hope Morrison, bitter a little. Move on and troll someone else. Christina does it her way and it's great!
