    Ingenious how the director of this episode chose to cut the music once Kirk says, “Mr. Spock” as he prepares to be transported and hopefully reassembled.
    From that point, all you hear are the sounds of the ship and those of the transporter and McCoy’s exasperation towards Spock, with Spock showing his nervousness. Such an effective use of silence and sound effects to build suspense, without the need for suspenseful music.

    The Transporter sounds and all other sounds from these star Treks were the best ever! ABSOLUTELY love all the cool sounds from star trek phasors , the medical machine in Mccoy's sick Bay,etc! Anyone agree?

    • @JAMESLEVEE
      @JAMESLEVEE ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The phasers, photon torpedoes and some of the machine effects were all right onto of the Paramount stock toolbox. See the 1953 George Pal adaptation of War of the Worlds. The sound of the Martian maglev for their fighting machines was a simple oscillator, that was turned up to a higher frequency for the Star Trek phasers. The photon torpedo sound was likewise recycled from the WotW skeleton ray. If you get a chance to see the 1956 Ray Harryhausen Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, the sound of the alien disintegrator ray (shipboard, not suit), was recycled in Star Trek's The Doomsday Machine as an engineering scanner.

    I always loved how they handle the moment when Kirk reappears... a moment of suspense when McCoy asks "Jim?" and we wonder if the reintegration of the two Kirks actually worked... Instead of a drawn-out speech or a weak "I'm okay," Kirk snaps, "Get those men aboard fast!" Compassion + decisiveness = Kirk is whole again. Great piece of concise screenwriting.

    As Spock mentioned, a unique opportunity to appraise the Human mind, or to examine (in Earth terms) the roles of good and evil in a man.
    Our goodness basically makes us more intelligent and unafraid
    Our darkness gives us willpower and strength to make the tough decisions
    Neither can survive on their own, and it takes the combined strengths of both to control the weaknesses of the other, and bring out the best in the whole.

When you consider how much more incredibly complicated it is to produce a scifi show of it's kind as opposed to just any other more ordinary show, and the time constraints they were under to do it, l think we can say for sure that the entire Star Trek - TOS crew did a truly amazing job!! There is a certain degree of pity the audience can't help but feel for Evil Kirk as he's screaming, terrified that he won't exist anymore. It's very emotional to see how, despite his evil maliciousness, he's still afraid for himself. Very tear-jerking to see Good Kirk embrace his dark side in understanding that as unwanted as Evil Kirk is, he's still needed, and his attempts to comfort Evil Kirk with the knowledge that they'll be whole again, as they should be.

    I know Shatner's performance as Evil Kirk was somewhat overdone, but in all fairness it should be remembered that the character was totally insane to begin with. His performance as the normal Kirk, though, was actually pretty good.
    I personally feel that Shatner played Kirk quite well most of the time, contrary to what is often portrayed. He only overdid it once in a while, such as a few occasions when Kirk got angry, but usually he perfectly embodied Kirk's adventurous spirit.

    • @kitcat7538
      @kitcat7538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Shatner has a wonderful control over his facial expression and his voice. He is capable of incredibly subtle acting. It is so good it is taken for granted, but he gets the pitch and tone of his voice and the expression of his face just right for the commanding ship's captain he is playing.

      @@kitcat7538 I really liked the scene in this episode where Kirk, Spock, Scotty and Bones are in the transporter room, awaiting the results of trying to put both sides of the "space-dog" together, and William Shatner's stressed-out-acting. Especially his holding onto a portion of the transporter for dear life, and then, his deep distress when the "space-dog" dies. I also like the scene where the "big three" are in sick-bay, arguing about whether Captain Kirk should go through the transporter, after the failure with the "space-dog". Spock and Bones have different opinions about Kirk making the same attempt. Kirk, having trouble with the power of command, stands up, closes his eyes, lifts his head, and says, "Somebody, MAKE the DECISION!" Spock replies, "Are you giving up command?", and Kirk snaps back into Captain mode, opens his eyes, and says, "No", and Bones replies, "Then we can't help you." Yet, Kirk does make the decision, because he's Captain. Fantastic, in-depth performances all around.

    The double for Kirk in the transporter scene is Eddie Paskey, who was William Shatner's stand-in.
    He also played the ubiquitous "Mister Leslie" who appeared in the background in over 50 TOS episodes, usually as a redshirt. He even died in one episode, but was seen walking the corridors alive and well the following week.

    The very nature of the episode requires over-acting that only Shatner can pull of, and yet still make emotionally powerful. I think if they remade this episode with Chris Pine, it would have been straight up fist fight between the two Kirks and the good one would have out fought him somehow, or fighting with brains. Though this would have made sense, it would have lost the more human element that this episode demonstrated.
    And personally, I think Shatner's acting gets a bum rap anyway.

    • @kitcat7538
      @kitcat7538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Shatner's background as a Shakespearean actor stands him in good stead when he has to play someone who is overwrought. So many scenes in Shakespeare require the display of very strong emotion.
      Nimoy is wonderful in this scene, using minimal changes in expression to convey so much anxiety and concern. Just the sight of the faces of Nimoy and Kelley are all that is needed to ratchet up the tension. They don't have to say word.

      William Shatner is a superb actor. He can say anything with his face, and his voice is always pitch-perfect. If the script calls for him to shout, he shouts. If the script calls for a subtle and nuanced performance, that is what he provides.
      Shatner was a member of the Canadian National Repertory Theatre in Ottawa. He acted in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. He was Christopher Plummer's understudy in Henry V.

      Judging by the famous "blooper" reels from this series, they probably both burst out laughing and ruined the first 20 takes. Shatner liked to clown around on the set and get the others laughing, particularly the intense and serious Nimoy. Shatner would have struggled desperately to do this scene with a straight face, and would have gotten the cast and crew laughing too. Probably drove the director right up the wall.

    Tuvix was an interesting concept and had powerful moments... but how it ended was just messed up.

    • @kitcat7538
      @kitcat7538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I thought the ending of Tuvix was perfect. Captain Janeway knows she has made the right decision in saving Tuvok and Neelix. She knows that they had a right to their lives and a prior claim on that body. But as the crew gathers around Tuvok and Neelix to embrace them and welcome them back, she walks outside the door and then pauses, giving a last thought of regret for Tuvix. Then she sets her face determinedly and shakes it off. She has made the only decision she could have made; it is done; she has her job to get on with. As the welcome for Tuvok and Neelix continues, she moves away, passing out of camera range. Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

      @@kitcat7538 I had no problem with Janeway making the decision she did. I was surprised at the controversy the ending created. I would have done the same in a heartbeat. But then, there are many times in TNG that I just would have turned Data off.

    I have long suspected that there is a Freudian analogy here. Evil Kirk = Id. Good Kirk = Superego.
    Evil + Good Kirk = Ego, the true, real personality of Kirk, which has to negotiate between the two extremes.
    Does this make sense to anyone else?

    • @keeblergraham211
      @keeblergraham211 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but I see a Jungian analogy: The evil Kirk is the Shadow- the part of ourselves that many of us deny and want to keep hidden. However, we are only as healthy as the degree to which we embrace and accept this dark part of our psyche -as Kirk did at the end of this episode.

    So Tuvix was kind of like the opposite of this; instead of one becoming two, two became one except here, they didn’t make some ridiculous moral dilemma that each Kirk had the right to live.

    • @kitcat7538
      @kitcat7538 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The situation with Tuvix is different. He is complete within himself and capable of functioning. Neither of the two Kirks can exist alone.
      Captain Janeway makes the right decision in saving Tuvok and Neelix as they have a right to their lives and a prior claim on that body -- but the moral dilemma she faces is real.

    • @darkjediMIK
      @darkjediMIK 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kitcat7538 I don’t recall any other reason for them not to exist separately except that one Kirk having both personalities was superior than the 2 alone; otherwise, they could live as separate entities, just each had half of his personality.
      I too agree what Janeway did was the right choice, I just think the qualm about Tuvix having a right to live reminded me of what “evil” Kirk said about wanting to live and nobody had a problem with it cause he wasn’t really going away in the same way Tuvix didn’t go away, he was alive in Tuvok and Neelix.

    • @GoGreen1977
      @GoGreen1977 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you put away the false narrative of Shatner always chewing the scenery and really watch the series, particularly the first two seasons, you'll see he does some fine and subtle acting. In this episode alone, be has to portray two extreme sides of Kirk's personality. Also, I think his acting in Star Trek 2 and 3 (the films) deserve far more appreciation than what is generally acknowledged.
