    My father used to tell me of the two competing rail line from Philly to AC. They both advertised less than an hour between the cities. Crossing south Jersey they were known to go over 100mph regularly. There apparently was one pair of trains per day which raced eastbound. This was in the 1920s, the age of steam. What a sight that must have been!
    By the way, also commuter train service into Ocean City, swinging south at Winslow Junction I believe. One can trace the Blue Comet route driving through the Pine Barrens with the help of an old map, still finding places where the right of way is still quite visible.

    There used to be a direct service known as the ACES, express between NYC and AC. NYC-Newark-AC. But it stopped operation in 2011

    • @clarkpj1
      @clarkpj1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I rode the ACES once! It had an AEM-7 on one end and a diesel on the other. Operation was thus:
      NYP to (almost) Philly - crew in AEM, motive power from AEM. Diesel prime mover was shut down for this leg.
      Almost Philly to AC - crew in diesel, motive power from diesel.
      AC to almost Philly - Crew in AEM, motive power from diesel.
      Almost Philly to NYP - Crew in diesel, motive power frm AEM. I don't know if the diesel prime mover was shut down or not for this leg.
      So they used all 4 possible combos of cabs and power. This was at least partially paid by the AC casinos to drum up business.

    Although I like trains a lot, the one thing that always draws me to your channel and your hour long videos is your commentary. You have a natural gift for storytelling. I really can’t stop appreciating the railroad history and personal stories (I really liked the one about your fathers drama with a yankee player) and I hope you continue spreading your knowledge and experiences to the world. I will be more than happy to ride this train any day of the week. I wish I could go ride it. I am one of the biggest fans of NJ transit. Great video, I used to live in Elwood, NJ from Saturday, December 14,1963 to Saturday, June 21,1969. I used to watch various PRSL trains on the Atlantic City line many times. Walked on the Atlantic City Boardwalk many times as well. I was 10 when I had moved to Elwood, NJ from Ridley Park, PA. My late father worked for Boeing in Ridley Township. I’m familiar with Hammonton & Egg Harbor City. I travel by train on Amtrak when I’m in the San Diego area to & from Los Angeles & Oxnard, CA when I’m home in the San Diego area, I also ride the San Diego trolley as well. Most of my long distance travel is by Amtrak. Where I live at in Arizona I have to drive, but if there were reliable A,track service & high speed train service like what Japan has, I would be riding it a lot out to San Diego, Los Angeles.

    • @PGHammer21A

      True - Commodore Barry carries US 322 - Tacony-Palmyra carries dual-state 90 (PA/NJ) - The first picks up US 40 and the two parallel the ACX into Atlantic City. US 40 (when solo) is the Warren Harding Highway and has Wawas and Valeros along its length - I know as that is my usual route through the "Veggie Garden" State - in addition to the Wawas and Valeros there are lots of veggie stands along US 40 as well (starting at Labor Day until the first frost)

    I travel to Atlantic City all the time. There are approx. 2 ways to travel besides driving your own car, Taking the bus or train. There are 2 ways by rail to head to Atlantic City. I take the Amtrak to Philadelphia 30th Street Station out of Metro Park Station/Woodbridge, NJ. It's a bit costly but it's a nice ride to Philly. Sometimes depending on when you leave you can catch a good deal. All trains start out of NYC regardless. When arriving in Philadelphia you can then catch the NJ Transit Atlantic City line to Atlantic City. It's approx. a 1 hr. 20 min. ride. The cost for the NJ Transit from Philly is $10.75 one way. They do have many departures to AC from Philly.
    The Amtrak / Northeast Regional can cost on average about $40-$60 one way but sometimes a good deal will cost Appro. $25. The cheapest way is by local NJ Transit to Trenton. Then you have to transfer to the SEPTA line to Philly which takes approx. an hour. I am not sure of the cost of this leg. The SEPTA can actually take you to the Philadelphia International Airport as well. I prefer Atlantic City Airport but that's a different trip adventure.
    The bus is also a good choice. I take it out of Rahay, NJ one way to AC (Panorama) that trip one way is $30 but you receive $30 if you are a casino card holder. It is cheaper to buy a ticket at the bus stop itself. I then take the NJ Train back to Philly then to Amtrak to Metro Park in Woodbridge, NJ. If you have Amtrak rewards account it does have its advantages. Even on a trip to AC. Amtrak will keep you advised of your train progress if it is late or on time. They can also give you the option to bid for a higher-class seat as well. Enjoy your next trip.

    Jersey Ave is such a weird set up. I sometimes go there to take photos because it's low platform and it's a nice angle to view high speed trains. But to return northbound, you have to pretty much have to continue south to Trenton, and then come back north. Great film Railman. Now a question for you. I live in Matawan and the NYLB(Jersey shore line) has terrible service into NYC. It takes over an hour to travel to NYC. The NYLB(PRR) use to make the journey in less than one hour. They did that journey without having to stop at Linden, Elizabeth, North Elizabeth. They stopped at Rahway to allow passengers to transfer to the PRR main line trains. Let the Main line NJT trains make those stops, not the Shore trains. The exception to the schedule is that commuter trains in the morning and evening do not make those stops, they are termed EXPRESS. As a result, I travel to the South Orange station from my home(half hour journey) and join transit which takes about 25 minutes into NYC. I will arrive in NYC before the train from Matawan. And the cost is half the fare from Matawan. Welcome any thoughts from other railfan viewers.

    • @wooiiin7281
      @wooiiin7281 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shore line doesn’t have terrible service into the city. The rush hour and off peak times are close to NEC times. Pops used to work for transit and we would be in and out of the city all the time. The reason the shoreline makes those stops is to give people extra leeway if they miss the NEC and seeming the shore line comes up on the corridor at Rahway that wouldn’t be smart to blow pass that stop everytime

    Question, let's say you had a job in NYC but couldn't afford to live there but you also don't want to depend on a car either, what affordable commuter towns with access to the commuter rail would be recommended?

      Too many to mention. I’ve heard that some places in New Jersey are cheaper than New York. A lot of people live in Hoboken because they say it’s cheaper than New York City and then hop on the path and get into Manhattan real fast

    Great work as usual Mr. RR(HG). Knowing what a perfectionist you are I'm sure you'll welcome the correction, of sorts, to a statement you made at 45:55. You are correct when you point out the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in Palmyra. The Commodore Barry Bridge is another bridge further down river connecting Gloucester County, NJ with Chester, Pa. 59:55 Robert "Bobby Bacala" Baccalieri Jr.

    By the way, to make Amtrak service effective, first, it needs to be faster than driving, which it wasn't.Second, allow gambling in the train, say slots and 21. Third, allow a bar car. Fourth, make the service every two hours. Fifth, leave NYP, stop only Newark, Philly, AC. Best, of course, would be to rebuild the Blue Comet route!

      There used to be an Atlantic City express train with dedicated club style cars. The service was discontinued because there isn’t enough capacity in the tunnel between NY and NJ.

    Why does the Atlantic city line run with the oldest NJT train fleet with mostly older comet II coaches, and old locomotives? Why don't they replace the comet II and IV coaches with the multi levels, and run exclusively comet Vs and ALP-45s on the Atlantic city line?

      @@3985uprr I think they need to lengthen all the stations platforms to at least 300ft, and purchase Stadler flirt BMU trains (similar in design to the UK versions) and implement all doors boarding at all stations. It can cut down on trip time, as well as greenhouse gasses.
