    If you think LIRR into Grand Central will be crazy, wait until Metro-North starts sending trains into Penn Station, that's going to be madness!!!

      Someone will need to take a photo of Metro North, LIRR, NJ Transit, Amtrak, and NY&A trains all lined up in a row.

    Your videos are great, but the narratives are a cut above! I grew up on LI with the LIRR. Haven't lived there in a while and the last of my family moved away in '20. When I make it back I'll buy you a top notch LI diner lunch and we'll take a train ride. I want to ask you about the six track history that ends west of Forest Hills and an interesting story about a young PRR engineer (slide rule not train operator) that set the speed at 60 for the tunnels. Cheers!

    21:04 is the boundary between mainline type double rail track circuit and yard type single rail track circuit approaching Jamica. There's a specifically designed impedance bond (the iron case between the running rail containing an electrical transformer) that collects traction return currents coming from both running rails but send it to only one of them beyond. As single rail track circuits provide no cab signal coding, you immediately hear the alarm when cab signal drops to 'restricted'.

    Interesting video of one of the busiest rail corridors! Amazing how many trains are correctly routed.

    As a recently retired truck driver I can remember the countless times coming into NYC via the GW and going under apartments and other buildings on I-95.

      Long Island City station needs to be rebuilt on the waterfront and have direct connections to ferries.

      @@jamesparson Absolutely right! Do it! After all the old Long Island Railroad did it in 1861. And later in 1880 the 34th street 3rd Avenue El shuttle train ran to the ferry terminal across the East River.

    Ah....how I do love these head end videos. It sure beats looking out of a side window. Shame you can't do more of the LIRR this way. Even rear end shots would beat side window shots. Were you using the suction cups on the glass? The only thing that would have made this video nicer would be if you had your scanner on. That would have been the pièce de résistance.

    • @3985uprr
      @3985uprr  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The LIRR is reviving their Budd M3’s. By the time Grand Central is open they should have 100 of them in service and they are great for RFW’s. I plan on getting many of them

    I may be wrong but were you born and raised in Philadelphia? To speak differently from New Yorkers. I myself am a New Yorker who grew up there during the Mad Men era and I speak American English with a New York accent. By the way I am a naturalized American citizen who was born in Havana,Cuba in 1956. We came to America legally on August 2, 1956 to NYC Whalen it was the baseball capital of America with 3 stadiums. Yankee Stadium, Polo Grounds Stadium and Dodgers Stadium.

      @@3985uprr Well in that case, THANKS! I lived in Richmond Hill and for the 1964 New York World's Fair, my late mother took me and my little brother to the Fair and we walked to Jamaica station for the special service train to it. We rode on a double decker on the middle of the train. The lead car was built in the 1920s and has a large single headlight on the roof and had straw seats like the old subway trains that still were running then in NYC on the BMT and IND divisions.

    • @3985uprr
      @3985uprr  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @musicforaarre ปีที่แล้ว

      @@3985uprr Thanks. I thought that the line from Downtown Brooklyn was supposed to continue onto the Atlantic Branch to Valley Stream or some such; if so, then the existing two underpass tunnels that line up with the center line of the Jamaica Station just east of Jamaica station would be the appropriate routing, no ?? Aarre Peltomaa

    • @3985uprr

      @@musicforaarre according to the new schedule when Grand Central opens it will be Atlantic terminal to West Hempstead through trains. Some rush-hour trains from the east will go into Atlantic terminal but it’s mostly going to become a shuttle operation from Jamaica to Atlantic terminal. The main line west to Grand Central in Penn Station will become a very very busy line even busier than it is now
