Seeds You MUST Sow In MAY Before It's TOO LATE! | Allotment Gardening For Beginners

- May is a very busy and exciting month in the allotment garden with many jobs to be done and lots of veggies and flowers to be sowing. Spring is well underway now and the garden is starting to look much greener with the first few things coming into harvest too!
It's getting a little late to sow some things though, and May is your last chance to get them sown if you want to achieve a harvest before the end of the growing season. There are other things which are ideal for succession sowing so you can achieve steady harvests throughout the growing season.
Let me show you what vegetables and flowers I'm sowing in May in the garden and what I've already sown in the last couple of months. I help this video helps you guys out in some way.

Mesembryanthemum are a spectacular little flower which I grew a couple of years ago and have grown ever since, a definite must have for summer colour.

Mesembryanthemum’s are lovely little flowers that grow in small clumps and which close their petals as the sun goes down! Reopening as sunrises. My father used the grow them every year. Happy childhood memories :) suffering alongside you with the demise of wilko’s. So sad

Done mesambryanthemums a few years back, they lived in the greenhouse, were beautiful. Flowers opened and closed each day and were quite big. I plan on doing more.

Great to see you Jim and get inspired for May 🌱 My garage grow lights are too weak I wonder - seedlings weedy/leggy for the most part except for tomatoes cucumbers and courgettes. Still I’m promised help putting up a small poly tunnel this week so I’m excited. The early potatoes are showing green leaves - thanks for the great advice 👍🏼
Very exciting! Most leggy plants can easily be fixed by burying the stems when potting them on 😊 let me know how your new poly goes, it's a brilliant feeling isn't it!

Great update James I'll be sowing my cucumbers this weekend, variety "Merlin" my runner beans are growing well, peas have germinated, I'm not growing sweetcorn this year, I've got a lot of cabbages that need potted on a great variety called Regency, I have grown the mesembre them ones you mentioned 🤣they are a lovely flower, great video James.......Steve
Cheers Steve 😀 are you not a fan of sweet corn? My beans are slowly germinating.. slower than usual for some reason. I do love a good cabbage, are those the big solid ball ones?

@@downtoearthwithjim Hi James the Regency cabbage is a pointed cabbage I also grow stone head they are a round variety, solid heads, I have sown sweetcorn today I wasn't going to but I have 😀.Steve
Oh good to know the Guinea pig plants are ok I may put a few of mine outside 😅😅. But not my aubergine they died 😢 or my peppers they are being pampered still. I chitted my squash it’s easier to see if they germinate instead of staring at a pot of dirt 😊. Great update Jim good to see your mojo back 👍👍, Ali 🌧️🌤️💨🥶🇨🇦
I also started my squash seeds off on damp tissue 😂 they take an age to germinate don't they. My peppers are as of yesterday now all in the polytunnel, im hoping for a good year for peppers. Thanks for watching Ali, and I hope you have a fantastic weekend of gardening ahead!

Hi Jim. Very informative. Your poor aubergine (or was it a pepper?) hope it perked up after a water. I'm throwing cation to the wind a bit and planting out my flower seedlings now. Running out of space in the house so will likely move some toms and peppers into the polytunnel at the weekend. All the best. Mags
Thanks Mags. It went straight into the polytunnel raised beds with the rest of them a couple of days after. It was a pepper. I'm still keeping a close eye on the conditions but it certainly looks safe in the greenhouse and polytunnel now. There again I'm much further south than you. Enjoy the rest of the week!
New subscriber here 👋also new to gardening, i was going to buy some jacks magic but just wondered what compost you prefer?
Welcome to the channel! 🧑🏻🌾 Honestly composts seem to be changing by the year. I used to swear by Jacks magic compost as it was a lovely texture. It's now awful! More like Jack's tragic compost now.. I'd stay away from it if you are sowing or potting on. It'll probably be okay if you're topping raised beds up and just using it as an amendment. I've just purchased some bloom and gro.. good stuff but it has peat in it. You make your own decisions whether to use peat or not, the community is very divided on the topic. But most peat free composts seem to be awful so for the time being I'm sticking to composts with peat in till the peat free stuff improves
@@downtoearthwithjim I've seen other youtubers use Clover and Q4 but I can't find any compost with peat in local to me and it costs too much to pay for delivery! Have you tried New Horizon vegetable compost 🤔
Just curious - why do allotment gardeners say "to be honest" so very often in TH-cam videos?
I think it’s more of a British-ism than a gardener thing
To be honest, I don't really know 😂 we are just being honest!
I think David is right, it's something a lot of us Brits say very often.. although I've never noticed it till you pointed it out 😆
Maybe because alot are not honest, so want to emphasize that we are the honest versions, lol
I have a big polly tunnel with grow lights, should I be able to grow year round, also got heaters
There's a lot of things you can grow overwinter in a polytunnel. I struggle as I have trees shading my plot in the winter and the plot gets almost no direct sunlight in winter. Leeks, onions, spring cabbage, mizuna, salad leaves, garlic, just to name a few can all be grown over winter in a polytunnel 😊

Thanks for the video, I've had my seeds growing in my unheated conservatory and every thing has come on so well, I'm worried too well, my courgettes are getting really big, but the temperature is not good enough outside to go out. would I be better re sowing or will these transplant OK ? Thanks
When did you sow the courgettes? I won't usually sow them till at least April. I sow them around mid April usually as they grow so fast. Where abouts are you located? Should be okay to go outside very soon 😀 might want to harden them off first though. You could always sow another batch now Incase those first ones don't survive 😊 and the later sowings will catch up really quick as well. it's all trial, error, and experimentation

I think I will sow some more, just in case.

Kale is man made,not natural at all, is it healthy ? not to me
Just like all the other brassicas. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts, all have been bred from wild cabbage by humans by cross breeding and selection. The same goes with most other vegetables

I wish it still felt like spring here. I think it pretty much went from winter to scorching summer weather.
Thank you for the list. I'm trying to get the rest of my seeds in the ground. I just started some pepper seeds and I hope its not too late but we don't get really cold winters and no snow so I'm hopeful.
Where abouts in the world are you? I'm in the NW of England and we have a short growing season so start early, depends where you are 😊 there again I've picked peppers in October/November before in the polytunnel!
We pretty much skipped spring altogether haha!
