This Jazz Piano Tutorial explains the basics how to play Jazz. In this video I give a high level overview of Jazz Theory to explain how it all fits together, starting right from the most basic concepts in music (notes and intervals) and building up from there.

I’ve been playing piano for almost 50 years now (still learning!), and never thought that I’d ever ‘know’ a better instructor than my 1st piano teacher (a Peabody graduate who was heavily influenced by Keith Emerson). Apparently, I was wrong.

You need to realize that you’re the BEST INSTRUCTOR/TEACHER on the entire internet. I like how you present your material with picture in picture and you do it without any sign of an inflated ego whatsoever. You demonstrate clearly with an element of simplicity. This video filled in so many holes in my foundational understanding of theory. Like when you explained modes as the same scale with different tonal centers. I never really fully understood modes until I heard that. I just saw them as individual scales I had to memorize. That understanding of relationship and context just makes everything I’ve been trying to learn so much clearer.
Yes, there are many many holes that couldn’t round itself up. Chord progressions are somehow mysterious. I do believe that there are universal explanations that encompasses everything. This video is very good. But a lot of things are still inaccurate.
Reminds me of when I thought I knew French from high school classes, then in college we covered everything I knew in the first day of class! Wowwwwwwww!

Honestly the best resource on chords i've found on the internet yet. Things tell you what number chord to play but the diatonic tri-tone stuff really helps me make non-conventional chords which I really appreciate dude. I can finally change from 2-5-1 which I was using because everyone says it works, or the chord diagram that just tells you which chords sound good in what order.

Im really grateful for this. When I search for beginner jazz stuff on youtube your videos never come up. I found this on a google search. The algorithm for youtube has gotten really bad and only puts out clickbait videos in searches now. Jazz people are the worst gatekeepers in music, so this material is gold. Again, thanks.

Your lessons are the best of any I have watched on You Tube. No other gives the details and meaning of how chords and scales work and the information on the top left of the videos are great. You give a complete explanation of all the variables possible and easy to understand. Keep the videos coming and thanks for your help to a man who loves jazz and the sounds of the piano.
Almost 10 minutes into the video and I am just loving it!! It is brings HUGE clarity to a rank beginner, who loves jazz but plays just scales :-) and in a jazz barren country i.e. India. Of course, what helps, is our own classical music heritage. Coming back, this, is singularly best video I have seen on Jazz Theory.

Really great stuff here. I have been watching this video for the past 3 days, as smoothly as I could, so that I could take as many notes as possible. The thing that has always annoyed me about learning Jazz is that I just couldn`t find the proper theory explained in a way that someone with very little knowledge like me could understand. super clarity, super step by step explanation, putting it all into an intelligible scheme,. when part only is explained, as in ordinary learning, there is too much that just doesn't seem to add up, or leaves out so much as to be even more confusing. this overview makes it clear that it does all add up and how. it seems a great roadmap packed with precise detail that, when the time comes, will spring to life.

Yours is the BEST TH-cam CHANNEL on music education. I have seen HUNDREDS, and YOURS is the BEST most comprehensive one. If you had better production, you would gain more visibility on youtube, since I noticed viewers watch video production quality and how the video is marketed (with comedy or an authoritative serious tone) more than actual content. People want to be sold to instead of educated, which is sad.
Anyhoo, I will subscribe and watch all your videos from here onward. I am only beginning my advanced music journey so here's hoping my education will be a success. Cheers to your channel!

I love this, thanks for putting this together. Definitely helps me to understand what I'm hearing when just doing improv on the piano, and gives me more foundation on how to do it better. I'd like to work on using different modes and understanding augmented & diminished chords & scales.
