I dig this new wave of vinyl collectors. I’ve been doing it for decades and settled into “the way I’ve always done it” I saw the backspacers on Facebook and came looking for other ideas and the refile/new vinyl bin and lights were “holy crap! How did I not think of this in 30 years???” So thanks! Great ideas!
Last night I was thinking of a way to keep the records from sliding back, and this morning I wake up to see this video as one of my recommended videos. Mind blown. Thank you!!
Love your vinyl collecting videos. I already had the Turntable Revival spacers, and the alphabetical separators for my vinyl shelving, but after watching your vid, I ordered a set of LED strips similar to yours. I appreciate the tips!! 🤘
Handy to mention; when mounting led strip, do NOT drive tacks, staples, nails etc through the strip as it may damage internals. If extra hold is needed then use staples that span the width of the strip or tack next to the edge so the head holds it. Car rear window defroster repair kits from auto parts stores work to fix broken led strip conductors if you can't bear to throw away broken strips ;) Also, there are lots of inexpensive materials available for making filing cards if you enjoy a project. I hope you end up putting tape or something over the edges of those metal tags where they overlap the card to avoid possible 'aaw, CRAPs' in the future. Cool video, I'll be looking for more.
I just started using new arrivals been and it really does help a lot. that's a great idea about putting the strip of wood in the back to keep them from falling out, very good video my friend.
I used 5 gallon wood paint stirrers, cut to the proper length (13.5 inches) then glued 1" letter on them (did the same with craft sticks for the CDs) I used 1x4 for the "stops". The lighting is a combination of LED automotive accent miniature light bars. For overflow, I build record cases out of 1/2 inch copper tubing (stays with the steampunk motif)
Love your video. You did a terrific job explaining everything. Nice job on the cabinet and lighting too. Looks great and thank you for the Amazon links.
Great video! I loved seeing George Harrison 33&1/3, a great understated album. Regarding records falling off, why not get a sheet of 1/8 inch plywood and attach it to the back of the unit? One could get the hardware store to cut into a couple smaller pieces to make it fit better in a vehicle. You can even cut with a hand saw if you don't use power tools. (I do woodworking as a hobby though, so I'd use a table saw.) I recently made my son a record player cabinet and some crates. Now i need to make a cabinet for myself. Ha Ha!😂
Nice I use foam pipe insulation (Lowe's) it Lines up records and won't. Damage any lps edge. I secure back with ,1/4 inch oak plywood to adds support on the back side.
This is such a great idea, I will have to steal it from you! Could you please show a diagram or empty a cube to show how you lined up the lights? I got confused with the explanation and seeing it all layed out would really help... Thank you so much!!
Great inexpensive divider option is... I found 11" x 14" thin plastic cutting boards (think plastic sheets) at my Dollar Store at 2 for $1, so it cost me $13 for 26 dividers,, I bought a pack of alphabet stickers and stuck them on the end .. I just cut the 14" length down to 12.75", and they stick out just enough for the letters to show between the albums.. works great
Dude, this is awesome! I'm gonna try the light thing too I think. I have a 12 cube Ikea Kallax, and am already in need of a second. For overflow, I use a black plastic crate that I picked up for a song at Home Depot as my new purchase bin - it works beautifully. I also did the backspacers idea when I first got it, using thin bamboo strips and velcro - works like a charm! Love the video! Thanks for the great tips!
I've been collecting vinyl records for years, but only just started getting serious about taking extra care of them as part of an ongoing collection. Though I am new to your channel, you've given such great tips and advice essential to upping my collection game. Thanks to your advice, each of my records are now fully protected with their own outer sleeves and the recommended poly inner sleeves (no static/damage here!). I just purchased a similar cube storage system (it should be here in 2 days, YAY!) to house my ever-growing hoard of music and would LOVE to win these spacers to go with it! Thanks so much for everything you do!
I JUST got my set of backspacers st week. What a life changer. I tried so many random things to keep my records flush and nothing has worked like those.
Great video! Thanks. My collection is getting too big and I think I'm going to have to replace my Crosley wood bins with the Walmart storage solution. I liked the idea with the LED strips too. Looks mint!
I just bought one of the cubes from Walmart & I had come up with a different idea to keep the records from going thru, but I like the spacer idea too. Now I want to add the light strip to mine also. Thanks for the great ideas.
Put a cardboard back on it, even use the cardboard box the rack came in. (either hot glue it or use little cabinet nails to secure it to the rear. The rack will be much stronger and less likely to accordian
Why I think those back spacers would work for me is cuz like you said I always have albums getting pushed all the way against the wall sometimes I can't find an album and it's because it's been pushed so far back it's hiding between two. That's a wonderful idea man to have the back spacer it would save me a headache
I have a wooden crate on wheels which I got before I got my shelving. I use foam insulation tubes for the back of my records. And I’ve put L.E.D lights on the back of my shelving.
Cool man. I have the same storage cubes with the same pattern. I’m at almost 1000 records and the filing folders are a great idea. I have wooden dividers that are like: A - D, E - H, etc. You could even be more specific and write a genre on a tab. I might look into that. One thing I would say is to move those speakers away from the side and back walls. Speakers need room to breathe.
Stumbled upon your channel, love this video, great ideas to make my collection look as great as it sounds! I'm now in the market for everything you have suggested. from the shelves to the lights to the spacers, to the index cards. It all looks great!
I love the backspacers so much! It makes them flush and so satisfying to look at! Also i have a lot of cords behind my.collection and they can get tangled in between, but not with those spacers
I wonder if I should just use some cardboard cut from my Imperfect Produce boxes I get every week. Were the backspacers purchased like, super super easy?
I have over 2,000 pieces of vinyl, you can also buy storage racks versus your cubes. when you alphabetize your collection use first name, example Carlos Santana would be filed under the letter C, I use a flashlight or a light on a baseball cap to search my vinyl versus led lights, get some large cardboard and cut to size for your lettering instead of buying files , peace & love

Man that is an awesome idea for all my top shelf Rekkids. I have a similar setup under my player that is under utilized. I think I will set it up like yours, and even the new un-added Rekkids container is slick. Thanks for the great ideas.
Cool video. I have a massive collection so lighting not really an avenue for me except in living area where small shelf I have few items. would be cool for decorative purposes. The Smead file is what I'm looking for since I have thousands of lp's in multiple categories. I would recommend Bags Unlimited for bags, dividers, etc. They seem to be the best priced for our vinyl needs
Your channel came up on my feed. Enjoyed the tips especially the LED strips. I may do that to my collection. I subbed to your channel. Peace love and rock and roll ✌️
I'll tell you what I did - I have over 3,000 vinyls. All I did was go to Home Depot and buy my own plywood. I bought 6 long 8 foot 11 inches of plywood. And 2 of those plywoods I cut into 10 pieces. 13 inches in height. Glue and srcew them all together. I measured 22 1/2 inches for each space inside my dividers (5). You do not want to stack to high. So 30 inches is enough height for both stacked together. Then I took 3 milk cartons and placed 1 each at each end and 1 in the middle. And believe me those milk cartons will hold anything. And of course I have every vinyl in a-z order. By the way it cost me under $250 for the plywood (from 976-CREOLEMAN)!
I own the Ikea Kallax shelving unit. The extra space at the back doesn't bother me. In addition to LPs, I also collect 78 rpm shellac records. It just so happens that an album booklet for 12" shellac records, fits perfectly in these cubes (height and depth). To each their own on how to organize. I do it loosely based off of year/genre. To me it would be strange to put Brahms next to Bowie. The "newly acquired" crate was a great idea.
I was looking for a solution to my backspace problems a while ago as well. One day, I found a bag full of styrofoam ready to be dumped on the street. Perfect sizes, I only had to cut it to fit horizontally. It won’t damage the bottom of your sleeve since has a soft texture 😉 If you guys have ideas for a cheaper file guiding solution please let me know. Oh and by the way I like the LED lights 😉 Peace and love
Thanks for the plastic album cover solution. I bought a new 180 gram record got a pop. Saw a speck on the groove. TH-cam said use a wooden tooth pick to remove the defect. Good idea?
It’s not ideal but the only space I have right now. I tend to broadcast across my whole house anyways not just sit in one spot. I’ve been listening with headphones lately for focused listening
I do wish Death Cab would do a vinyl-specific mastering for Plans, the existing release is just the CD mastering cut to vinyl and it's not bad because it's not hyper-slammed like Kintsugi is, but it would be nice to hear a wide-open, dynamic mastering like the DSD-mastering they had Ed Brooks do for Transatlanticism that both the Kevin Gray and Ryan K Smith vinyl cuts (Barsuk and VMP respectively) used. Sadly Chris Walla was the audiophile in the band, I don't think Kintsugi would have been such a victim of the loudness wars if he was still controlling various production aspects. It was 100% thanks to him that Transatlanticism received an audiophile mastering for the SACD and vinyl releases.
Thanks! I am going to try and get some of those file organizers, everything else online for this purpose is just way overpriced. Have you heard of or tried using pool noodles for the backing on the shelves? I plan to give that a try (an even more affordable way that the backspacers) and I’ll report back with my results.
Re the backspacers, I leave more front space, so I can put one nice record in the particular section of the alphabet with cover facing out. A real cover is nicer than the various spines. With a bit of scrap wood and any saw, the back spacers can be made at home for close to zero cost. I would not buy any, so easy to make. I made my own "arrival bin" (for me more of a current rotation bin) that also has a top display area for the record that is currently spinning. I would also suggest to not stuff each cube to the gills as it will reduce the frequency by which one has to shift everything. You can use library L-brackets to keep records upright, remove them once space gets less than 1". In your video, I hear a lot of slap echo and speakers are right against the back wall. I would invest in some sound absorbers (or make your own with a 2" wood frame and some Roxul 80), and pull out the speakers from the back wall. Will make a ton of difference. I made absorbers from a discarded trucking palette, covered them with printed fabric (etsy) showing some of my photos. Adds a ton of flair to my vinyl den. LED lights, hmmm. I might use some to get better white light onto the records I pull in the evening. Will ponder that for a while. The color lights are a bit too gimmicky for me, but that is a matter of taste, of course.
@@danielgeiger7739 that’s awesome! As for my space it’s not ideal with the spacing of my gear and speakers that close to the wall but it was the only spot I could use in my house for my set up. I’ve been slowly adding sound proofing and carpets to my hardwood floors to dampen the reverb but it’s an uphill battle lol thanks for the suggestions!!
something got cut off here, sorry. Etsy vendor is Anthony king photography in Los Angeles. I can't add images here, but if you want, check out instagram at undaobscura post from March 7. It shows the absorption panels, the rack I made from 3/4" ply, and also the headphone stand with natural manzanita branches. The Current rotation bin is next to my VPI TT. I did not take pictures of the panel process, but if you want, I can add images & description of current rotation bin with polished manzanita wood as well.
How many LPs does this cabinet hold. I have 2,000+ of EX vinyl. It covers 3 decades of Rock, Blues, Jazz, Comedy, and offbeat hard to find audio. I'm looking for nice solid storage. I have room for cabinets. You've sold me on adding LEDs.
This holds about 450 records (depends on how many double LPs you have). If you have the cash I'd recommend the Ikea storage shelves over this one as they come in larger sizes and are more sturdy. Also be sure to secure the shelf to the wall with earthquake straps or something similar. Do you have a discogs? If so please share!
Yeah it’s not ideal for focused listening but I have no where else to move them given my space. I guess I have too many records and need a smaller cube to let them breathe lol Luckily they don’t touch the storage cube that has my TT on it which was the goal. I tend to broadcast my records via sonos lately and listen throughout the house.
I love what you did with your collection. Did you have to add some sort of adapter to the LED light strips? Looks like you have 2 inputs, 1 for each of the 2 strips, yet the lights you linked to don't seem to have that.
Can you stand that cube up vertically as well as horizontally as you have it? Was just looking on Walmart for it and wanted to make sure it was the same one as yours. Great video thanks.
Yes but I’d recommend getting furniture straps to fix it to a stud in the wall if you fill it vertically as it will have a higher center of gravity and will tip easier
Why not beef up your cube rack by putting a back on it, even cardboard tacked on the rear will beef up the rack substantially and stop records from flying through the opening.
Was searching the net for those back spacers, ended up at Turntable Revival which linked me to you. Cool help. I just bought a couple Ikea Kallax cube sets up, so working to get it all set up. Hadn't given any thought to lights, but might consider it now. :)
Sister told me I needed to get organized . So I put everything in it's place . She then broke-in and shopped me out . Have not been able to organise after , tho I've tried
The speakers should not be positioned like this, tight to corners you are really going to be only getting half the quality. Love the lights and the strips for the rear of the cubes
I used folded angles on the lights to make them fit the square cube then I wrapped them around the back. The cool thing is when you wrap them around the back it creates light behind the shelf too: images.app.goo.gl/LHjsqJmDcczkoJscA
Zero, they are led with minimal to no UV rays and all my albums are in protective sleeves. UV light from direct sunlight is what will fade the covers fast!
I like the lights and the indexing cards. Do you get any vibration from your speakers through your turntable while playing? Reason I ask is because my speakers are qbout that close and I do. My space is about that big.
None! I use vibration dampening feet on my speaker stands and leave about an inch of space between the shelf and the speakers. I used to put the speakers on the top of the shelf and that gave a ton of bad feedback and vibration
If you buy the Threshold stuff from target the outer edges are a bit thinner , taking up 3/4 of an inch less floor space, put a back on whatever you buy.
i’m worried about my records getting warped so basically i have my records the exact way you have them on the shelf. but there’s lots leaning on eachother there’s about 50 records in my collection all leaning will this warp my records ?
If they lean a little they should be fine! Just fill up the cube to about 80%-90% and you’ll be gold! You more want to watch out for over packing a cube as that can flatten your spines
Do you have any interference from the LEDs with your speakers? Because I bought the same brand leds you did with the link you provided, but it causes pretty unbearable interference and sound quality decline. Not quite sure how to fix it.
@@Music-for-Miles I have a uturn orbit and their site says "The Orbit is internally grounded through the shielding of the left RCA output, so no external ground wire is needed (even if your phono preamp has a ground screw or terminal)"

I have had issues with other receivers in the past and ended up buying a hum eliminator which goes between the socket and the lights. But first try plugging the lights into a separate wall outlet.
@@Music-for-Miles I have tired different outlets. It happens regardless of where it's plugged into. Aghh it took so long to do, I would hate to have to do it again especially with that nauseating off gassing it has 😭 Thank you for your input!
I don’t like the idea of pulling albums out sideways, or having to crouch down to draw them out. I’d much rather have them organized facing out, like the record shops. Same with 45’s. I have searched online but still haven’t found a sturdy, affordable solution for storing albums and 45’s. I’ve looked at Amazon, Wayfair, and other supposed specialty sites. If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate it. I feel that good solutions might be getting furniture/bookcases etc. that are not specifically made for vinyl, since they will almost certainly be a lot cheaper.
I don’t always do focused listening since I have little kids. I often casually put a record on and play it throughout my house via sonos so I can listen anywhere. But I always try to sit down and listen to my new arrivals front to back!

I have heard of that but the back of my collection is visible from my stairs so I liked the look of the wood :) let me know if it works!
Do you have an Etsy shop or anything where you sell your woodwork?
@@Music-for-Miles I just do it for fun, as a hobby. I bought the fabric prints from an etsy vendor
Where did you purchase your cube bin shelf? Do you recommend as sturdy enough for the records and stereo on top ? Thank you. Excellent video!
Dude you are cool! Cool idea!
One sugestion for you. Move those speakers from the wall.
So, with the LEDs on, say, a white setting and all other lights in the room off or low, can you still read the record spines by the LED light alone?
Nice job.
I love what you did with your collection. Did you have to add some sort of adapter to the LED light strips? Looks like you have 2 inputs, 1 for each of the 2 strips, yet the lights you linked to don't seem to have that.
Interesting! They may have changed the model since I purchased them. The strip I picked up was split in half with a built in adapter.
Great tips!! Did you use legal or letter sized file guides?
That’s what I would like to know as well?
I would say legal cause letter size is too small for the 12” 🤙🏽😎
Can you stand that cube up vertically as well as horizontally as you have it? Was just looking on Walmart for it and wanted to make sure it was the same one as yours. Great video thanks.
Yes but I’d recommend getting furniture straps to fix it to a stud in the wall if you fill it vertically as it will have a higher center of gravity and will tip easier
Wonderful... no I like the way you have it. I just wasn’t sure it was the same because pic on Walmart site had it vertical. Thanks!
Where did you get your cube record storage shelf? It looks great
Awesome 👏🏼
Why not beef up your cube rack by putting a back on it, even cardboard tacked on the rear will beef up the rack substantially and stop records from flying through the opening.
Was searching the net for those back spacers, ended up at Turntable Revival which linked me to you. Cool help. I just bought a couple Ikea Kallax cube sets up, so working to get it all set up. Hadn't given any thought to lights, but might consider it now. :)
Great tips ! I was just looking for lighting ideas your video showed up perfectly
Where did you get the actual cube console? I’ll Ike it quite a bit!
Walmart
@@Music-for-Miles I followed the crown to ikea and picked up a Kalax unit. Looks about the same. Popped my new RT-85 on it and am in love!
What link for the cabinet I’ve been looking for it everywhere
That's cool!
Sister told me I needed to get organized . So I put everything in it's place . She then broke-in and shopped me out .
Have not been able to organise after , tho I've tried
How are the lights holding up after a year +? I see a lot of people in the reviews mentioning they died within a month.
Still working!
Love the ideas. On the file guides, Are those legal size or letter size?
Extra-wide legal in horizontal format
I bet you'd get better sound if you bring the speakers out of the corners.
Definitely would! I just am limited on space in this area.
The speakers should not be positioned like this, tight to corners you are really going to be only getting half the quality.
Love the lights and the strips for the rear of the cubes
do you have a pic of the lights mounted from underneath? And did you just wrap them around the side divider as you went from left to right?
I used folded angles on the lights to make them fit the square cube then I wrapped them around the back. The cool thing is when you wrap them around the back it creates light behind the shelf too: images.app.goo.gl/LHjsqJmDcczkoJscA
Can you give a link to the lights?
Do the LED lights generate heat that could potentially warp the vinyl?
Not at all :) led strips like this generate no heat. I can touch them for as long as I want and not feel heat.
@@Music-for-Miles Good to know. Thanks!
How much fade on covers have you noticed with these lights?
Zero, they are led with minimal to no UV rays and all my albums are in protective sleeves. UV light from direct sunlight is what will fade the covers fast!
I like the lights and the indexing cards.
Do you get any vibration from your speakers through your turntable while playing? Reason I ask is because my speakers are qbout that close and I do. My space is about that big.
None! I use vibration dampening feet on my speaker stands and leave about an inch of space between the shelf and the speakers. I used to put the speakers on the top of the shelf and that gave a ton of bad feedback and vibration

What planet am I on? Records falling through the back of my "storage cube"? My brain hurts.....
Where did you get your cube storage?
Walmart :) it’s called “better home and gardens”
If you buy the Threshold stuff from target the outer edges are a bit thinner , taking up 3/4 of an inch less floor space, put a back on whatever you buy.
Can you please share a link for the storage cube you got?
This is just the better home and garden cube from Walmart. I have since changed to the IKEA setup. It’s more sturdy.
@@Music-for-Miles thank you. Can you share the link for it?

Has anyone ever lit a 2-cube organizer? Mine stacks vertically. I'm not sure exactly how to run my LED lights...
That was way cool, too bad I only have like 10 albums!
Get a small cube and build your collection!!!
Will this work for the 9 cube storage bin from Amazon? I don’t recall the brand. It does have a thin sheet across the back but it’s bowed out.
It should! If you’re handy with a saw you can always cut these they are made of wood. I’d get the brand name then check the site to see if it fits
@@Music-for-Miles I wasn’t able to get the brand name, however each bin measures 13 1/2x 13 1/2 x 13 1/2
i’m worried about my records getting warped so basically i have my records the exact way you have them
on the shelf. but there’s lots leaning on eachother there’s about 50 records in my collection all leaning will this warp my records ?
If they lean a little they should be fine! Just fill up the cube to about 80%-90% and you’ll be gold! You more want to watch out for over packing a cube as that can flatten your spines
@@Music-for-Miles thanks also will it damage my records if i put my records in there sleeves at the back of the album cover ?
Where did you get the cube rack?
Target has some great 2, 4, and 6 spot cubes made by Brightroom. The openings are like 13", so more than enough room. Highly recommend
Do you have any interference from the LEDs with your speakers? Because I bought the same brand leds you did with the link you provided, but it causes pretty unbearable interference and sound quality decline. Not quite sure how to fix it.
Did you ground your turntable? There should be a ground terminal. If now you can use a ground loop break, power conditioner or hum destroyer
@@Music-for-Miles I have a uturn orbit and their site says "The Orbit is internally grounded through the shielding of the left RCA output, so no external ground wire is needed (even if your phono preamp has a ground screw or terminal)"
@@shunnonbeleveirs sounds like a ground loop. Contact Amazon for an exchange, the strip you got may have a faulty wire. They usually will send you a replacement and give you 30 days to return it.
How do you find the time to listen to all your records ?
I don’t always do focused listening since I have little kids. I often casually put a record on and play it throughout my house via sonos so I can listen anywhere. But I always try to sit down and listen to my new arrivals front to back!
which sleeves do you use?
Vinyl storage solutions for all my sleeves :) vinylstoragesolutions.ca/#
I spot two copies of Plans by Death Cab!
