    Dude I was 17 when I heard this. Miss these days of just getting lost finding these artists / songs on the internet. 34 now, married, have a 6 year old….still rocking to this, now with my daughter. Time and life are weird but these songs bring everything into perspective.

    Ok... all tongue-in-cheekiness aside. The definition of racism that we all have become accustomed to using, is based on the concept of differential treatment that occurs within a system of differential privilege. (I hope this makes sense.) I am trying to explain why a white guy complaining in a rap song about what a minority group member is doing is totally different than a member of a minority group doing the same thing. It is because the white guy is a member of a MAJORITY. And the argument that now there are more minorities than white guys and therefore the white guys who were the majority are now the minorities, commits so many argument fallacies, you don’t even want me to list them all! My point is that: for a white guy to complain that he is upset about the Blue Scholars ethnic singer rapping about racism because if a white guy raps about an ethnic person, then he is called a racist, is not reasonable, does not make sense, is not a valid argument. Because the argument suggests that a white guy and an ethnic guy are equal and so an argument can be made reversing the roles. But they aren't equal things. The white guy is often born into better circumstances, is treated better socially, and treated better within the workplace and by the law and educational systems, and represented as the “norm” and the “better” guy to be by the media. So he has a lot of pluses working on his side. Whereas, an ethnic minority guy, especially African-, Mexican-, and Native- American guys, have a much greater chance of being born into a less advantageous environment, have a higher chance of being treated badly and/or unfairly within society, as well as the workplace and by the legal and educational systems, and has been represented within the media as being “odd” and the guy you don’t want to be, though this has begun to change the last 20 years or so. So, you cannot argue from a position that erases the very historical position and effect of racism in America.

    • @Rankaroonie
      @Rankaroonie 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your attitude is based entirely off corrective action. And it's 100% biased and one sided. I read the whole thing but basically wrote you off as uninformed halfway through your comment.
      The whole point of equality is EQUAL. You are literally saying "this group of people can rap about this, BUT THIS OTHER GROUP CAN'T.", That is like the definition of racism.

    • @LacrosseMark
      @LacrosseMark 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      he's hawaiian tho, so he is kind of a minority

    • @Gavin-jj5dp
      @Gavin-jj5dp 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a dangerous thing to say darkmaitri . You are right, nobody is going to argue that ethnic minorities haven't always had a hard time in America. This is not something that only happened to people of color. The Irish and Italians were strongly discriminated against as well don't forget. That is not the point though, times have changed and there ARE opportunities for EVERYONE. In my field, if there are two applicants for the same job that are equally qualified and one is white and the other is not, the ethnic applicant will likely get the job. Diversifying the workplace has been on the rise and will continue to stay that way. Kids growing up in today's America don't see racism first-hand. Telling them these things will do them no benefit and might discourage them from pursuing their dreams. This is America, and it truly is the land of opportunity.

    I wish I could put into words how much I love this song. and Blue Scholars in general. If someone were to ask me what hip-hop was I would direct them here.

    this song isnt just about homeless people. this shows the spirit of the Pac NW. i recognized some of those places. they filmed this at home, not at some highend filming studio. the buses are how seattle metro buses look. A great story combined with an incredible beat and delivery of verses makes for an awesome song. i feel lucky to live in the NW.

    When you get back from a long ass day, tired as hell, stressed out and just sick of it all, pop some Blue Scholars in your favorite music player, close your eyes and let those rhymes take you somewhere else. This is therapy my friends.
