The first game is bleh nowadays, and many people are starting to even hate the voice acting and cult storyline.... Me? well, I think the game is a classic but now that I replayed it along with SH 2 3 4 and Origins, I don't really have reason to go back to it

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite on the series, but Silent Hill 3 is second without a doubt. It's so good they brought all the religious stuff back, the Heather's character is great, the soundtrack is as good as SH2. And, it's the scariest silent hill in my opinion. Also... I love Douglas.

Uploaded on Jul 24, 2006 Do you want to make me cry or something? All that nostalgia drives me crazy. It takes me back to my youth. God, i miss those years. When the sky was blue and the fields were green. I thought i would meet someone who loves this game as much as me back in the day, and to this day. But it never happened. They don't make games such as these anymore, not even close. This was the last good Silent Hill, everything after that is just below average. This was the perfect opener for a perfect game. Even as a kid i loved the OST more than anything when it comes to music, along with the unofficial ambient/drone selection soundtrack.
a few games after 3 were pretty good, but not as spectacular. i probably have the unpopular opinion here, but i really liked shattered memories a lot. the room was good, too, and origins had an interesting plot. 3 is probably my fav, though.
Heather is cheeky and tough, yet she can be emotional too while i get her to kick a monster in the groin 5 or six times. After she kills Claudia she doesn't do a victory dance. She falls to her knees and cries for her dad. This "demon" is the sweetest daughter ever. Rest in peace dad...
Early 2000s was a great time to be a gamer. Graphics were finally catching up with developers imaginations and every year the visuals and presentation improved by a noticeable margin. Compare SH1 (1999), SH2 (2001) and SH3 (2003) and you can see the progression. These days you can look at a game from 5 years ago and barely see the difference. I guess my point is that it was a fun time to be a gamer. You didn't only get new games as always, but you witnessed the development of a medium hitting it's stride.
This franchise will always have a special place in my heart! Especially the first 3 games! Perfection! It was a twisted psychological nightmare! Sadly Konami put an end to this masterpiece of gaming!

Well, to be fair, the HD collection ruined a _lot_ of what made these games worth playing. Luckily the PS2 iso of the original directors cut both exists and is very easy to get running.

sh3 has one of the most human female protagonists in any game. heather really conveys the emotions of a troubled teenaged girl, and though the world around her is crumbling and she does express her anger towards it all, she still retains her snarky attitude. and she's not remarkably beautiful and flawless- she has short, choppy, wavy hair, a fairly small bust, and freckles (and dark circles beneath her eyes, which is understandable!). the character designer wanted to portray an ordinary teenager (and the hair length was made short as it was easier for the ps2 hardware to process and allowed for more monster placement) and heather really feels like an actual person.

Harry was a newbie to this and James what mentally confused. Heather looked at this as a forgotten memory and kind of came off as snarky..which is why I consider this the best silent hill. Agreed! Started playing it a few days ago in its honestly my favorite. I even like it a little more than Silent Hill 2 because I found the puzzles to be better and the visuals are more colorful. I also like the characters in Silent Hill 3 more than in 2. Heather is a way better character than James. James in my opinion was a boring and didn't have much of a personality. His story was interesting, but he wasn't. Though, I do like the story in 2 more than 3.
+Carlos Caro i'll never be able to pick between silent hill 2 or 3 as my favorite, they're both so incredible in their own ways. i played through both of them as a kid, typically in day light haha, but they left so many haunting / entertaining nostalgic memories for me to constantly think back on. i'm so glad that in second grade the cover of silent hill 2 caught my eye at a blockbuster while renting a game to play with a friend during a sleep over. going through the lakeside apartments at 1am while a child alongside my friend was so absolutely terrifyingly and fun. a few years later i got my parents to buy silent hill 2 for me, and playing through it and visiting online forums to discover the symbolism of the monsters and the depth of the story blew my tiny mind. i was blessed with badass gamer parents who bought silent hill 3 the day it came out, and while my mother kinda reluctant of letting me play through silent hill 3 because in a game informer i had a review of the game discussed a scene in which a woman ate a fetus, she knew i had already played through the second one and loved it / was able to comprehend it's complex storyline. playing through horror games now a days doesn't carry the same punch that they did when i was a child and had an imagination that was so large. i know the games would've have had nearly as big of an impact on me as they did then. i was so enamored by the ost's too. to this day akira yamaoka (probably spelled that wrong) is one of my absolute favorite composers. i have memories of bringing my silent hill 2 game disc / the silent hill 3 OST disc that came along with the silent hill 3 PC version, with me to church camp. on the six hour drive to camp it began raining and i kept listening to theme of laura, white noiz, forest, promise / promise (reprise), laura plays the piano, end of small sanctuary, lost carol, float up from, never forgive me never forget me, & i want love. the entire drive was so surreal and listening to the tracks now bring me back to another time, a happier time & they're all drenched in nostalgia. these games are a huge part of my childhood which sounds fucked up, but they were so much fun and absolutely enthralling. i'm 22 now and i constantly go back and play through them. i know the games like the back of my hand and can beat both games in around an hour. the fastest being 37ish minutes on a silent hill 3 speedrun i did. i also remember seeing that terrifying silent hill 4 extended trailer at gamestop, i sat in awe for the entire 11 minute run time with my mouth open so fucking excited. in fact room of angel was one of the first songs i ever put on my ipod when i finally got one. unfortunately i wasn't that big of a fan of silent hill 4, and even worse my soul got crushed more and more with each silent hill release (except for shattered memories, that game wasn't nearly as great as silent hill 2 and 3 but it was still lovely). i even got an emulator on my phone in highschool and got to finally play through silent hill which was absolutely a fantastic experience too. while i should've been sleeping i'd play the game under my covers and i had a hell of a time. whenever the PT trailer went up on the PSN i downloaded it and nearly shit my pants whenever i beat it. hideo kojima, del toro, akira yamaoka, & ito junji? other than the original team silent there couldn't have been a better team. i was so excited, i scoured the internet almost every day trying to find any information i could on the game, but just like all my past disappointing experiences, you guys know how that ended. fuck you konami you're a literal demon. i hope pyramid head pins you down and mistakes you for a mannequin and relentlessly rapes you for days and days in a decrepit apartment kitchen.

For SH fans that don't know, silent hill 3 is the true sequel to silent hill 1. I have this for ps2 and it looks great with ps2 component cables, and with the noise effect turned on.
+Steven Morris The hd version has different voices, and MANY graphical glitches, audio sync problems,and the hd version randomly crashes. Just buy the ps2 or pc versions, do not give konami your money for the hd collection.

Back to where the games didn´t matter that how much advances on graphics where, it was to the sensation that it makes when you played it, games like this won´t be saw again. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was the best person that Akira Yamaoka could find to do this song´s vocals, its wonderful

This shit makes my heart ache tbh. I played Silent Hill 2 and 3 a lot when I was going through a particularly rough, lonely phase in my life. I used to get loaded on 3-meO or MXE and burn the night away exploring Silent Hill. This song especially is a huge throwback to my childhood. These games really made me reevaluate things. Really forced me to think. God damn life hits hard. Fuck.
Silent Hill 3 is a great game, don't get me wrong. It's more scary than 2, in its own way. But 2 was ART. SH2 had that psychology to it that transcends any other game... EVER. The fact that every corpse looked like James, the pervading sound effects keeping you inadvertently enthralled, the madness you felt overtaking you as you met one strange character after another, the final reveal... all added up to the most enthralling, most beautiful experience a game has ever given me. And that damn Promise theme, the greatest OST song ever... I can still listen to that song on eternal loop.

I remember seeing this video a long time ago when I was a kid. It was my first SH video ever. The first seconds scared the living shit out of me and I closed the window instantly. After a brief period of what felt almost like a heart attack, I went back to watched the whole thing. It was from then on SH became my favorite game series of all time, SH3 being my most favorite.

Back in 1999, if someone had told me "four years from now, you'll be playing as the little girl Harry's searching for" I'd been like "no fucking way!" Seriously, it's infinetly awesome that you play as Cheryl/Alessa in SH3. SH1 was a bit scarier, but SH3's story's a bit better. Homecoming wasn't a horrible game, but Im still holding out for the possibility of a really good SH game from the new team. What I REALLY want though, is for Heather to show up again. Best SH character ever.

Do you want to make me cry or something? All that nostalgia drives me crazy. It takes me back to my youth. God, i miss those years. When the sky was blue and the fields were green. I thought i would meet someone who loves this game as much as me back in the day, and to this day. But it never happened. They don't make games such as these anymore, not even close. This was the last good Silent Hill, everything after that is just below average. This was the perfect opener for a perfect game. Even as a kid i loved the OST more than anything when it comes to music, along with the unofficial ambient/drone selection soundtrack.
a few games after 3 were pretty good, but not as spectacular. i probably have the unpopular opinion here, but i really liked shattered memories a lot. the room was good, too, and origins had an interesting plot. 3 is probably my fav, though.
Heather is cheeky and tough, yet she can be emotional too while i get her to kick a monster in the groin 5 or six times. After she kills Claudia she doesn't do a victory dance. She falls to her knees and cries for her dad. This "demon" is the sweetest daughter ever. Rest in peace dad...

Early 2000s was a great time to be a gamer. Graphics were finally catching up with developers imaginations and every year the visuals and presentation improved by a noticeable margin.
Compare SH1 (1999), SH2 (2001) and SH3 (2003) and you can see the progression.
These days you can look at a game from 5 years ago and barely see the difference.
I guess my point is that it was a fun time to be a gamer. You didn't only get new games as always, but you witnessed the development of a medium hitting it's stride.

Well, to be fair, the HD collection ruined a _lot_ of what made these games worth playing. Luckily the PS2 iso of the original directors cut both exists and is very easy to get running.

It's crazy how these visuals, the music, the aesthetic all capture the feeling of that time... the late 90s and before seem like another world now much like SH's shifting realities.
Don't get why people don't like silent hill 3. I think its the best of the series, especially the scariest. God the Mall, subway, all those sounds that made me scared. My favorite monsters from the entire series has to be the closer and Slurper

1. Continuing the cult storyline, instead of doing what Silent Hill 2 did.
2. While Heather is an excellent character, she's also hilarious. I guess some people didn't like her breaking the fourth-wall to back-talk the player.

I don't get why people hate the Cult. All I hear is SILENT HILL 2 SILENT HILL 2 blah blah. Yeah its a very good game and I love it but people make it up to be godsend so far to say that SH1 and SH3 are shit compared. Even though the game would not exist without the SH1 existing and the cult events in the game. SH2 could not happen without the Cult. Also like to point out because everyone thinks SH2 is best thing ever, well no wonder every Silent hill game after 4 tried to copy SH2 because no one would shut up about -_-

But I'm just saying, I can see why after dealing with a Protagonist like James, a protagonist that is sane, confident, and even funny at times would be a bit jarring.
sh3 has one of the most human female protagonists in any game. heather really conveys the emotions of a troubled teenaged girl, and though the world around her is crumbling and she does express her anger towards it all, she still retains her snarky attitude. and she's not remarkably beautiful and flawless- she has short, choppy, wavy hair, a fairly small bust, and freckles (and dark circles beneath her eyes, which is understandable!). the character designer wanted to portray an ordinary teenager (and the hair length was made short as it was easier for the ps2 hardware to process and allowed for more monster placement) and heather really feels like an actual person.
+Spooky799kil Heather was a teem which is why I think she had her quirk which added charm to this also she was kind of aware of this since what happened in the past. Harry was a newbie to this and James what mentally confused. Heather looked at this as a forgotten memory and kind of came off as snarky..which is why I consider this the best silent hill. She had that sense of I am young and immortal thing in her head.

Agreed! Started playing it a few days ago in its honestly my favorite. I even like it a little more than Silent Hill 2 because I found the puzzles to be better and the visuals are more colorful. I also like the characters in Silent Hill 3 more than in 2. Heather is a way better character than James. James in my opinion was a boring and didn't have much of a personality. His story was interesting, but he wasn't. Though, I do like the story in 2 more than 3.
+Carlos Caro i'll never be able to pick between silent hill 2 or 3 as my favorite, they're both so incredible in their own ways. i played through both of them as a kid, typically in day light haha, but they left so many haunting / entertaining nostalgic memories for me to constantly think back on. i'm so glad that in second grade the cover of silent hill 2 caught my eye at a blockbuster while renting a game to play with a friend during a sleep over. going through the lakeside apartments at 1am while a child alongside my friend was so absolutely terrifyingly and fun.
a few years later i got my parents to buy silent hill 2 for me, and playing through it and visiting online forums to discover the symbolism of the monsters and the depth of the story blew my tiny mind. i was blessed with badass gamer parents who bought silent hill 3 the day it came out, and while my mother kinda reluctant of letting me play through silent hill 3 because in a game informer i had a review of the game discussed a scene in which a woman ate a fetus, she knew i had already played through the second one and loved it / was able to comprehend it's complex storyline. playing through horror games now a days doesn't carry the same punch that they did when i was a child and had an imagination that was so large. i know the games would've have had nearly as big of an impact on me as they did then.
i was so enamored by the ost's too. to this day akira yamaoka (probably spelled that wrong) is one of my absolute favorite composers. i have memories of bringing my silent hill 2 game disc / the silent hill 3 OST disc that came along with the silent hill 3 PC version, with me to church camp. on the six hour drive to camp it began raining and i kept listening to theme of laura, white noiz, forest, promise / promise (reprise), laura plays the piano, end of small sanctuary, lost carol, float up from, never forgive me never forget me, & i want love. the entire drive was so surreal and listening to the tracks now bring me back to another time, a happier time & they're all drenched in nostalgia. these games are a huge part of my childhood which sounds fucked up, but they were so much fun and absolutely enthralling. i'm 22 now and i constantly go back and play through them. i know the games like the back of my hand and can beat both games in around an hour. the fastest being 37ish minutes on a silent hill 3 speedrun i did.
i also remember seeing that terrifying silent hill 4 extended trailer at gamestop, i sat in awe for the entire 11 minute run time with my mouth open so fucking excited. in fact room of angel was one of the first songs i ever put on my ipod when i finally got one. unfortunately i wasn't that big of a fan of silent hill 4, and even worse my soul got crushed more and more with each silent hill release (except for shattered memories, that game wasn't nearly as great as silent hill 2 and 3 but it was still lovely). i even got an emulator on my phone in highschool and got to finally play through silent hill which was absolutely a fantastic experience too. while i should've been sleeping i'd play the game under my covers and i had a hell of a time.
whenever the PT trailer went up on the PSN i downloaded it and nearly shit my pants whenever i beat it. hideo kojima, del toro, akira yamaoka, & ito junji? other than the original team silent there couldn't have been a better team. i was so excited, i scoured the internet almost every day trying to find any information i could on the game, but just like all my past disappointing experiences, you guys know how that ended. fuck you konami you're a literal demon. i hope pyramid head pins you down and mistakes you for a mannequin and relentlessly rapes you for days and days in a decrepit apartment kitchen.
wasn't ready for those feels. It makes me even more sad that there won't be another SH game that comes close to 2 or 3. Even 4 honestly. I stil haven't finished it yet.

For SH fans that don't know, silent hill 3 is the true sequel to silent hill 1. I have this for ps2 and it looks great with ps2 component cables, and with the noise effect turned on.
Btw, don't get the hd collection version, it sucks. Even though the ps2 version is pricy, it will be worth every penny.

+Steven Morris The hd version has different voices, and MANY graphical glitches, audio sync problems,and the hd version randomly crashes. Just buy the ps2 or pc versions, do not give konami your money for the hd collection.

You described exactly what I did to enjoy this game, except I didn't have to buy the game, I used something called Free McBoot to run games on my PS2 without any Disc.

I rember buying this game and playing it on PC. The first time my sister and I listen to this song and we were just blown away, we became obsessed with Akira Yamaoka and Silent Hill Franchise in general.
Back to where the games didn´t matter that how much advances on graphics where, it was to the sensation that it makes when you played it, games like this won´t be saw again. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn was the best person that Akira Yamaoka could find to do this song´s vocals, its wonderful

almost a year and a few days away from this game being 20 YEARS OLD. It still holds up SO well 20 FREAKIN YEARS LATER. Atmosphere, graphics, sounddesign and yet modern developers can't get a lick of it today.

This shit makes my heart ache tbh. I played Silent Hill 2 and 3 a lot when I was going through a particularly rough, lonely phase in my life. I used to get loaded on 3-meO or MXE and burn the night away exploring Silent Hill. This song especially is a huge throwback to my childhood.

Silent Hill 3 is a great game, don't get me wrong. It's more scary than 2, in its own way.
But 2 was ART. SH2 had that psychology to it that transcends any other game... EVER. The fact that every corpse looked like James, the pervading sound effects keeping you inadvertently enthralled, the madness you felt overtaking you as you met one strange character after another, the final reveal... all added up to the most enthralling, most beautiful experience a game has ever given me. And that damn Promise theme, the greatest OST song ever... I can still listen to that song on eternal loop.

I remember seeing this video a long time ago when I was a kid. It was my first SH video ever. The first seconds scared the living shit out of me and I closed the window instantly. After a brief period of what felt almost like a heart attack, I went back to watched the whole thing. It was from then on SH became my favorite game series of all time, SH3 being my most favorite.

Seriously, it's infinetly awesome that you play as Cheryl/Alessa in SH3. SH1 was a bit scarier, but SH3's story's a bit better. Homecoming wasn't a horrible game, but Im still holding out for the possibility of a really good SH game from the new team. What I REALLY want though, is for Heather to show up again. Best SH character ever.
