A Glimpse Behind Qatar’s future city

  • Lusail City may soon become a household name. The metropolis, located north of Qatar’s capital Doha, will host the FIFA World Cup 2022. The city’s inception has been a tremendous undertaking- it has taken 17 years and billions of dollars to dredge the city from marshland at the edge of the desert. But what does the construction of a massive new development mean for Qatar's future?

    Cost of living is shooting up due to high expectations on FIFA. Apartment rent, car rent, etc not sure why the law makers not interfering on this. There are some real estate companies increasing rent by 45% such as ezdan oasis etc however the law says maximum 10% increases is permitted. Law and the reality are contradicting.

      it's all going to push toward removing all private owned land from westerners and change the currency system to a controllable monitored digital system
      essentially this way they can track corruption and tax it. owning your own land and property will be hard to keep when they rob every one of their mobility by changing the automotor industry too a electric format and forcing people off of oil.
      I mean gas and oil will still be used but i assume they will hide it's use and pretend fusion power works

      Meh, just organised countries. Taïwan, Germany, South Corea, Switzerland are all very well run countries and democracies. • @AnonymousReader-er4eg
      @AnonymousReader-er4eg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@filippopotame3579 democracy in the Global South gets corrupted very fast unfortunately.
      Democracy can easily be infiltrated by outside powers, such as the Bretton Woods institutions in Pakistan, or the French in Burkina Faso. These are examples of democracies corrupted by external and internal powers simultaneously.
      In Iran, the first democratically elected leader was Mohammed Mossadegh. He wanted to nationalize oil and kick out the notorious company BP (British Petroleum), but the CIA and MI6 conspired to overthrow him.
      They did a coup in 1953 and got rid of him, while putting a puppet leader called the Shah. The Shah forced Western values down the throats of Iranians. Iranian women were not allowed to wear their hijab so many of them unfortunately committed suicide. This sparked the revolution, but the revolution was hijacked by extremists and today Iran went from being left-extreme to right-extreme.
      Iranians didn't want the Shah, but they also didn't want Khomeini. Iranians wanted Mossadegh, the first and last democratically elected leader of Iran.
      If the West never overthrew Mossadegh, Iran would be a democracy today, and the revolution would have never happened, so Iran would probably be a liberal country today if the 1953 coup d'etat didn't happen, but as usual, the British and Americans want control over global oil reserves, which is the reason why they sanctioned Iran and Venezuela to prevent us from selling our oil to the markets.
      Democracies in 2nd and 3rd world countries are easy targets of predatory countries that aim to expand their hegemony. I'll take a good dictator over a corrupt president any day!

      @@mradjamesable you think Qatar can just magically turn their cities into oases? I wish it were that simple! But unfortunately it isn't...
      Oases only form when the wind cuts out channels in low-elevation areas of the desert, revealing underground precipitation that fell on Earth up to 20,000 years ago.
      People have tried planting gardens and oases in the desert of Arabia, but soon enough, the plants wither and plasmolyse, as the dust covers their leaves and accumulates in their flowers, almost as if it's choking the flora. Trying to plant an oasis in the desert is a task harder than it seems. You can't just force an ecosystem into an already existing natural environment. It's costly, difficult and overall a risky investment that most planners aren't willing to take.
      Plus, Qatar being a desert country already has water security issues, so creating oases would probably drain the last remaining groundwater reserves , i.e. if there are any left.
      And even if Qatar was to create man-made oases people would still complain about how "artificial" it is, and how Pakistani gardeners were used to create them (this happened in Dubai).

      @AnonymousReader-er4eg ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in the Emirates and have actually visited Qatar, so I highly doubt your claim of "no demand", because considering the rates of investment and the rates at which industries and business are opening up, Doha is growing faster than Dubai (which has entered its maturation stage), so building a new city doesn't seem that far-fetched. Kudos to them for urbanizing.
      While the migrant deaths are concerning, what's more striking is the indifference of middle and upper class South Asians (the backbone of most investment and the wider economy in places like Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, etc.) living in the Gulf, towards the bottom 20-30% of South Asians in the Gulf region (the backbone of construction and industry).
      I guess most of us don't seem to care because:
      a) we came here to hustle, not to become activists in a country (an absolute monarchy) that gave us financial opportunities. Everything has a price to pay.
      b) coming from cities like Karachi and Mumbai desensitizes us to income inequality, so it doesn't bother us.
      c) money always precedes morals in hyper-capitalist and individualistic societies that choose to see life as a rat-race.

      @Surojit Advaita Vijayate Qatar doesn't rely on food from India 🤡 Why do Indians on TH-cam have to lie in their desperate attempt s of coping? 😂 Saudi Arabia was the principal supplier of poultry and dairy products, while countries in the Levant (Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria) supplied most fruits and vegetables. The deserts are being greened thanks to technology made affordable by the petrodollars 🥱🤡

    • @AnonymousReader-er4eg
      @AnonymousReader-er4eg ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, Qatar isn't rich because of oil money 🤡 It's rich because of gas money. Although one could claim that natural gas and oil are two sides of the same coin, they are two very different fossil fuels, with different properties and uses 🤡
      Qatar's gas reserves will run out in a few hundred years, but by then, no one cares because humanity probably would have been wiped out by nature's response mechanism to our exploitation and destruction of ecosystems 🤡

      @Surojit Advaita Vijayate In 2021 India exported to Qatar, wheat and meslin worth $ 34.77 million according to the United Nations database. Compare that to the $3.3 billion worth of food imported from Saudi Arabia and the Levant. Qatar doesn't need India so lets get off the high horse. Qatar is simply aiming to diversify their sources of food.

    • @multa7053
      @multa7053 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Surojit Advaita Vijayate Qatar imported wheat worth 47.9 million USD in 2020. 17 million USD from Russia, 12 million USD from Australia, 8 million USD from Ukraine and 5 million USD each from India and Romania. The data is from oecworld and not available yet in the United Nations database as it seems to contain data until 2019 only.

    • @AnonymousReader-er4eg
      @AnonymousReader-er4eg ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheSanthalVlogger , there is a difference between sub tropical deserts (e.g. Arabian desert) and mid-latitude/shadow rain deserts (e.g. Mojave, Chihuahuan deserts).
      Arabian deserts are technically "purer" and their sand grain type, because they lack the rock formations, shrubs and other flora that can be seen in the deserts of California and Mexico.
      Arabian sand is also paler, and of golden-brown complexion, whereas the sand in Western deserts tend to be more orange-clay with a reddish hue.
      Some people find the greener deserts of California and Mexico more scenic and vibrant, whereas others find the Arabian desert more serene and peaceful in its desolate solitude.
      At the end of the day, deserts are natural entities of mother nature, and the human definition of beauty is always going to be subjective.

    This city was built on the blood of migrant workers from South Asia (Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and more). I urge fans to not go there and watch the game. That's the best we can.
