      With the current maps, it honestly is. Everything is just a straight pipe and enemies across almost all maps generally have to take your head on to pressure you which is way more advantageous for the long ranged backline weapon.
      If you can make yourself extremely hard to kill with good positioning and mechanical skill then you've got all the capability to stop the enemy dead in their tracks and enable the rest of your team to fight closer to objective without fear of wipeout. It can easily be a carry role when played right.

    Update on the end statement about my backline positioning maps. I’m going to start on the Splat 3 maps at the end of October. I want to take the month to collect some data on positions I like, and that I see others commonly using. Then I can share that information for those looking into becoming backlines or wanting to improve.
    Until then some of the maps in 3 that are coming from splat 2 can still be used as a base guide till I can update them. Those can be found in #resources in the Squid School discord server.

    As an X Hydra player, who originally started playing with the "normal" weapons, some advice I'd give for a starter is be patient, learn to hold your ground and try to move forward only with your team, as you are the backbone. Its easy to get impatient and want to go in or get down on the ground for some action, but thats not good. And the heavier the weapon, the worse that will be for you. So be patient, hold your ground, and dont be scared to fire just to ink or zone the enemy.
    It might not be visible in the final score, but if a short ranged weapon sees a charged/shooting hydra, they will be forced run/to go a different route or stand behind cover, which means ur teammates can use that opportunity to ink them or wtv.
    Also u will learn the hard way that u need to be good at moving from place to place, cover to cover, etc, as a smart enemy team wont be afraid to use a bunch of specials, subs or anything they can to ink, threaten and displace you
    Tl:dr: be patient, move behind ur team, use ur range, learn to move and not refuse to leave a certain spot, and and dont underestimate ur threat value.
    Edit: P.s.: if u are wondering on what weapon to start with/try, id say depends on where u are coming from. If u play short ranged mobile assassin, maybe try nautilus that alows u to keep some mobility and recharge mid charge, so its not too punishing. However if u are rlly determined to become a a splatling and or sniper main, id the best way to learn is start with the heaviest, it will be painful, but they will force u to adapt to their playstyle, especially hydra imo. Hope it helped whomever might read this ahah

      @@freddyvasquez3063 ok so that is the part where it might get to personal preferences/playstyle or mode. Rn i am using a main Swim speed, walking speed and ink resistance, not rlly caring about the subs since I dont have resources to farm perfect gear yet. However theres some stuff i want to try with and i think can work. Respawn Punisher (not recommended for beginners), object shredder, ink saver, recovery or bomb ink saver,since auto bombs use half your tank and hydra itself uses plenty of ink. Special gauge to see how spammable i can make the booyah bombs, and bomb resistance.
      That being sad id recommend the first three i said. I think those are good all around mains to have. And will have value in pretty much every situation. For the subs, im either gonna double down on 1 or 2 of those, or have some ink/bomb management subs

    I've been playing a whole lot of Tri-Stringer and found that it can play in some weird angles other Backlines wouldn't want, It dosen't rely on highground as much as the others since the whole point is that it can already hit behind cover, You'll still take it whenever possible just for the extra range but if you're too high up the projectiles will start falling straight upon reaching their max distance, Some fun positions I've found is right side on Undertow allowing you to reach the entire glass platform on the enemy side and lob projectiles all throughout mid, Another position is standing in the middle of the Grid platform on Scorch this allows you to reach all throughout mid with partial charges (50% and 75% primarly) and the enemy Backline position, If you're in need for more ink you squid form onto the wall then Squid Roll back to where you were (It's especially useful if you can't fully see mid as there might be someone waiting to jump up the big tower)

      I have a suspicion that the bows will actually not play like backline weapons once we've got them figured out. They seem like they want to take positions closer to where a rapid blaster would stand. Maybe that's off base, but I really don't think a bow wants to be competing for a charger's niche because it really doesn't have a lot of advantages over one.

    • @MegaFIare
      @MegaFIare 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@SquidSchool I personally disagree. The reeflux is definitely more frontline/slayer but the Tri Stringer does best as a backline weapon until further updates come out. Its whole kit is meant to be supportive to begin with and that's where it differs from chargers.
      The idea is that you zone your opponents while dealing chip damage and pick off the ones who get closer. Toxic mist helps zone them out and debuff them in certain key areas while killer wail 5.1 allows it to force the groups to move/punish zoned opponents who are stuck in corners. When you play a good Tri Stringer on a team with very active slayers, you'll ideally get the most assists out of everyone.
      While it's not meant to compete with chargers range or damage wise, the thing it does have over them is the ability to deal lethal damage over obstacles after zoning the opponent. While it can't kill open opponents as efficiently as a charger, it can damage them into being easy kills for the rest of your team

    • @voguefurret
      @voguefurret 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SquidSchool I see where you're comming from, I'd describe them more as a hybrid between a Charger and Slosher, They can put a lot of pressure on areas out of reach but they're not threatening enough to take the approach themselves like a Skirmisher but rather try to maintain control of places where enemies can't bypass quickly as those are where you're most likely to land the explosion and deny them that further mobility, It dosen't necessarily have to be a paint advantage as you can abuse the fact that teamates in the frontline stall enemies which gives you the option to deny them that forward position, See it like a Support/Anchor Hybrid similar to Rapid Blaster Pro, Stringers take their advantage over Chargers on maps with narrow corridors and small cover but struggle with maps that are large and open

    4:08 for an example of this try hitting the top dummy in the corner of the training room/lobby, its almost not even worth attempting head on, but going around the side of it makes its easy pickings all because of how close to the ledge it is

  • @soloshottie
    @soloshottie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    one thing about the ledge bit at the end, that doesnt entirely apply with the splatling in particular, in fact it can work against you. the splatling is held much lower than any other weapon class, which means on high ground, you need to almost fully expose yourself to hit a target, while on low ground the ability to aim up can somewhat mitigate this issue since the distance from your head *forward* to your barrel is less than your head *down* to your barrel, not to mention the ability to paint underneath a target on high ground when you dont have line of sight vs your inability to paint under them from above due to the ledge. of course high ground still has its advantages as long as you maintain that range, but as soon as that range advantage is lost the low ground quickly becomes more advantageous than the high ground if you have a splatling on said high ground. this also means splatling positioning strategy involves a little more decision making on when you want to be high, and when you want to be flat or low

    As (among other things) a charger players, I'd like to add a couple points:
    Right side peeking can genuinely be the difference maker in some interactions. Chargers especially benefit from the mechanic, because with weapons that have some form of shot RNG like splatlings, some shots might collide with whatever you're peeking out of. Chargers, however, always shoot in a straight line, so you can consistently right side peek with around 50% of your body being behind cover. There have been a non-zero amount of times where I got into a charger duel and applying right side peeking won me the fight.
    Also, on the ledge peeking thing. Short-range shooters _can_ still hit you even if they are right under the ledge _as long as_ you sit near the edge. By aiming at just under a 90 degree angle, their shots can just barely curve above and onto your head. Normally this is reactable due to the reduced damage, but especially if you already have some kind of chip damage on you like a Killer Wail or 30 damage from the weak hit of a bomb, those shots could still get the splat.
    And I also have to quickly mention that one person in chat who claims that mid charges are only a threat against splatlings, not chargers. Usually this is true but there is one relatively big exception.
    Most chargers deal 40 damage on a tap shot. This is a 3 shot. However, a lot of partial charge numbers are above 60 damage.
    Of course if you can get in the chargers face, most frontlines have enough dps to kill them before they can hit two shots. However, if the charger has some form of cover that they can hide behind, getting hit by a 60 damage or higher partial charge can actually be very scary. Since chargers are a burst damage weapon as opposed to shooters which are sustain fire, they can hit a partial charge, tank 1-2 shots which won't kill them, hide behind cover, then pop out again and tap fire, killing the other player. This is a surprisingly common trick that especially rushdown frontlines like dualies fall for.
    Oh, and to Gem Squid School, considering the (genuinely surprising) amount of depth I could squeeze out of this one interaction between a burst damage weapon and sustain fire weapon, perhaps a video on burst damage vs. sustain fire could be an interesting idea?

    this is the most incorrectly done thing I've seen online. So many backliners think they can get away with essentially just camping spawn and allowing 3 v 4 for 90% of the match and once the enemies inevitably and consistent get that 3 team wipe. the charger has a 1 v 4 on their hands and obviously get scrubbed clean.
    So you essentially sat your butt essentially being a non entity for 90% of the match and when its your time to shine. You flubbed it because you've put yourself in an impossible position.
    And thats fine if they take that in and learn that it obviously doesn't work. But it keeps happening and the same person just keeps doing it. Likely blaming teammates that they aren't winning enough instead of the obvious issue of being a bad backliner.

    are you going to make a video on midline positioning?

    • @SquidSchool
      @SquidSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Midline positioning is sort of a hybrid of front and back. The main principle determining all of these guidelines I'm talking about is whether you outrange your opponent or not, and with a midline weapon, well, sometimes you do and sometimes you don't. I'd say as a general rule, you wall out the Frontline to get picks or protect your frontline teammates and harass the backline when you can (especially on something like a rapid blaster) to give your team windows off opportunity. It's less your job to push the enemy team back as it is to create situations wh we re your Frontline can do that for you.

  • @skadi2911
    @skadi2911 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    (Note that this is experience from a casual player playing with randoms, still made it to X on my own in 2 though).
    For maining Jet Squelcher all throughout Splatoon 2 and now learning various Splatlings in 3, i'll add that the degree of mobility that you wanna have can heavily depend on what backline weapon the ennemy team is using.
    Since a backline's mobility decreases as its range increases, knowing how to react to another backline that outranges you can be vital. There's clearly a massive difference when i switch between Heavy and Hydra Splatling as the former allows me to take far more risks thanks to its speed, but at the cost of a lower range (and fire rate i believe ?).
    When i've been put in situations where i'd have to play Heavy against a Hydra, i sometimes need to change my mindset and almost play support to help my frontliner mates to get the kill on them and allow the team to move forward (or get the kill myself if they already distract the Hydra player but struggle to confirm). In this kind of scenario which can happen with randoms, i sometimes feel that need of getting out there and help them, as the longer range ennemy backline has the range advantage over me, but i have the extra mobility they lack.
    It's always a tricky equation to face another backline that outranges you as they can exploit high ground to its fullest potential. There's sometimes this middle ground to be found, as your prirmary goal remains to be the team's anchor and stay alive as much as possible while still getting those kills and helping the team.
