This worked out so well for you I think I'm going to do my WWII German tank. I dug a hole in my backyard and made it deep enough to hang the German tank from 4 cables. It is going to work out great because the overhead power lines running to my house is perfect to hang that monster and supply the current needed. Great vid.
i'm doing my whole bike....as i live in britain i've simply attached the zinc to my bike in situ and plugged a lead in from the house mains electricity and am now allowing the rain outside to work it.s magic!!! thanks ichiban!!!
Hi cactus I'am Taiwanese biker. I live in a island surrounding the sea and lots of rain with high humidity air. Could you tell me more detail about this? I can't understand " in situ" and "plugged a lead in from the house mains electricity" Thank you.
NB friendly heads up to our murican friends , UK electricity can give off vapours, (best to leave a door for window open) if there is a build up of these vapours it can start to reverse the process of plating. In extreme cases you could loose the whole bike when attempting this way, apart from the rubber and plastic items.
Only an intelligent person could tweak the actual facts enough to make this satire work as well as it does. Pure genius, plus the droll narrative is perfect. Your videos crack me up, thanks.
your electrical assembly tape connecting the "hot" and "power" wires to the battery backwards was pretty funny. but not as funny as that amazing electrical connection to the plate. hahaha
...it takes a lot to tweak the actual science and details just enough to be believable, and it takes a lot more to present, and film and produce it in a video like this...well done Itchybunns! I'll be watching more of your work! Thanks!
this gui is a talent by nature! he should be in the movies and I would sit there for hours - and he is right 5 of 5 ichi ban is what he has to earn! No one less!
It looks real, but is this a joke? At 2:42 the sacrificial zinc plate wasn't even touching the battery wire it was supposedly attached to. The battery wire wasn't stripped where it went through the hole in the zinc plate. The copper wire that was exposed looked to be too high to touch any of the zinc plate.
Clearly the wire was stripped and tightly contacting the Zinc. Not sure who's glasses you had on but maybe you should consider trading them old one's in for a new pair.
+Rick Murphy Wow, why are you being such a dork? Anyway, at 2:42 everyone can clearly see the wire is not stripped for it's loop through the zinc anode plate and the little bit of wire that is stripped at the end is barely if at all touching the zinc anode.
years passed and I totally forgot about you, then I picked a clue with the pickles, another with the drill and in the end I saw the ichiban stickers and it all came back to me haha I will subscribe, then I just need to re watch all your vids, hoping it's all been well with you over the years, greetings from italy!
Good job, but the coper wire don't touch the zinc plate, for faster results connect the wire to the plate w/o pvc insulation and replace the power source with higher voltage battery or AC/DC power supply.
Found this by accident, what a great accident to have. I've just started re building my 67 Bonneville. Stuffed it in a shed for 16 years. Long story, involved a crash. I need all the help I can get so these sort of finds are priceless. Now to make that tumbler. Cheers.
This is not a joke and works very well. He's relying on the fact you know what you're doing and KNOW his jokes and can discern the "mistakes" LMAO. His videos are hilarious and very good advise.
I watched all your vids soda blasting , plating and sonic cleaning and have decided to zinc plate my car. I don't have any money to buy zinc but I remembered you said boats have them. So I'll put some vinegar and soda in the trunk and drive my car off a quayside next to a boat and hook it up to an overhead powerline then I'll have a rust free car. Thanks Ichi.
@Ichiban Moto I did this to the chrome on my '67 Norumphasaki cafe racer sidecar outfit. I added Golden Syrup to the solution and now my bike looks real classy with all the gold trim. Awesome info as usual dude, peace out.
This is getting annoying lol. I keep running across this guy's videos when I actually want to figure out some advice on a cafe build and this dudes goofy videos keep popping up lol.
Exactly @tommy bourke, its so annoying! Do some real videos that actually help us. I feel bad for the people who dont know and actually expect that battery to work 🤦🏼♂️😑
The shenanigans, YET AGAIN, make me question the validity of professional results gained from cat toilet sand and pickle juice. I want to try this and not be disappointed... but somehow, I see failure in my future.
keeping the bike clean and oiled up would avoid all this hullabaloo in the first place. Seems like taking a sledge hammer to plant a nail in the wall to me. useful info though.
You would need to disassemble the part to be coated but Master Ichiban is Badass so he quite literally doesn't need to. One day you may be badass enough to get away with it. It's all about putting in the hours.
After watching another Ichiban video I must retract my thumbs down rating on this video. I now realize that Ichiban is a true professional. I bow to the master! This video now receives a thumbs up rating.
I sent my spork off to CERN in Switzerland, to be calibrated using the Large Hedron Collider. I don't know what they did, but it cost me a fortune. I now have the most accurate spork on the planet. It's BAD ASS.
"Ichiban Moto videos are all meant for entertainment purposes. It's a parody guys, c'mon!" What a waste of the internets and all the valuable resources that go into it! No wonder the world is in such a state!
actual that works, it's a tumbler that is usually used to clean ammo casing for people that reload for their firearms, but you use the right product you can do small parts as well.
Don't be ridiculous Robert MTL have you even watched the video how he 'made' the vibrator and used CAT LITTER? But let's bear in mind even the cleaning was just part of this stupid waste of time and energy.
Another great windup even if the 'science' behind it is sound (with a bit of research). Worrying about the refurbishment of the wheel tensioners when the rest of the rear end is almost scrap! Genius! 😂👍
i did this once by crushing a bunch of zinc capsules up into powder and putting that in the solution with a bare wire hooked to power and dunked my parts in. pretty awesome!
Ichiban Moto: that is pretty neat. I had a corroded bolt on my Harley that was difficult to get to so my mechanic eventually replaced it. If corrosion occurs again, I think I may try my hand using your method. Thanks much for sharing.
I really don't know what the hell was going on there with the unstripped wires & that precision drilling, but i had to subscribe, but not only that, it's a wonder he didn't blow his place to kingdom come with the awesome power of a AA battery.
Bad-ass indeed, was thinking of anodising some aluminium bolts gold for the project bike, clutch cover and valve cover. Nicely done fella, 5 stickers indeed
This is what my brain feels like when it slowly melts as I'm speculating on how to do a project I've never done before, hahaha. It just devolved more and more.
Just a clarification, zinc isn't "rust-proof", or even really corrosion-resistant. Zinc plating is a sacrificial medium, meaning it corrodes so the steel doesn't. To protect the zinc from oxidization (rusting) and to harden the surface, you then have to apply a layer of chromate, typically clear chromate. Think of it like paint. You've got the steel of the body, then the layer of paint that gives it color, and then on top of that you have the clear-coat. Zinc is the same way; you have the steel, the zinc, and then the "clear-coat" of chromate.
Not criticizing your video, in fact, it is really good for anyone that is a DIY'er. I want to point out that your tumbling process may not have removed all the chrome. It did remove chrome plating that has become "delaminated" (not sure of the proper term) due to oxidation of the base metal. Corrosion did not occur over the entire part. What you accomplished is to smooth the surface appearance for visual appeal. For stripping off the plating, within reason, use hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid). Hydrochloric acid is used to remove the chrome in production shops for the purpose of re-chroming. Removal time is equivalent to plating time. in most cases (pH determines the time on known thickness). Chrome is approximately 1/6th the thickness of nickel. Most chrome double plating ( meaning chrome over nickel, no copper in the process, such as toasters, bread boxes, Harley-Davidson) keeps the part in the nickel bath for approx. 32 minutes and less than 5 minutes in the chrome bath. Hydrochloric acid is available in hardware store and big box stores. Do not leave in overnight!!!. Depending on the solution of HCl (pH), it may take only 10 minutes. You should be able to see something happening. Rinse the part thoroughly. If you own a tumbler, after stripping, drop said parys into the rocks to achieve the smooth finish. Sorry, I do not have recommendation for the time the part is the strip bath because plating comes in various thicknesses and acid for the consumer is weak compared to what is used on a production plating line. Regardless. this is fun. WORK SAFE, know the dangers. Acids can become airborne and corrode everything in your shop, including your lungs. This is not something you try without investigating. Proper ventilation is necessary or do it outside. The acid bath for stripping does not need electric current. Yes, residual chrome can be plated over. Results will not be as good as the original process. Zinc is sacrificial, always turns white after time and is no where near as good as chrome or cadmium, it is just shiny in the beginning and EPA friendly. If you find a mistake in my information, please add the corrected info. I am trying to help. Personally, I despise zinc after knowing the quality of cadmium most of my life.
I discovered a chemical free plating system that may be of use to you Master Ichiban... Simply wrap the same Kevlar/Teflon coated sheet material that some chefs use for covering a turkey around the part and for a Thick Lacquer like finish Sellotape is outstanding. Just a trick from UK Ichiban-land. Xx
I took apart some used alkaline batteries, extracted the zinc paste core, mixed that with water, and use a graphite lead from a pencil as an electrode. An alkaline electrolite will plate slower but achieves greater thickness.
hi friend. great and a simple video, just 2 questions : 1)how can i find Zinc plate easily/ cheaply anywhere in my home, i mean any scrapped household item? 2) How long the zinc plating will last, temporary or a good period of time? Thanks :)
This worked out so well for you I think I'm going to do my WWII German tank. I dug a hole in my backyard and made it deep enough to hang the German tank from 4 cables. Now all you need is a tiny zink plate, a spork, and a small battery. And maybe some pickle juice...
Are you still alive?
Finally, a zinc plating how to that anyone can do at home!

I loved the drilling process into the zinc plate.

Amazing!! Your zinc plating looks identical to silver spray paint!
your electrical assembly tape connecting the "hot" and "power" wires to the battery backwards was pretty funny. but not as funny as that amazing electrical connection to the plate. hahaha
Absolutely love Ichiban's videos. But I'm never completely sure which parts to take seriously...
OMG! That hand drill scene! LMFAO!! That was great!

Great technical advice as always. I think I'll plate my nuts, they are getting old and are rather crusty.
Coldfin9er That's what my wife told me about mine.
I lead plated mine. Makes them bullet resistant.
Make sure you leave them in a vibratory tumbler first.
You will have to put them in the vibrating parts cleaner to remove the "crusty" first. [gotta see that]
Soak it wid pickle juice for 1day then let your wife taste it if its ready to get plated or not and also no shower before and after
"The red is hot, the black is power" Awesome!
Only in the Northern Hemisphere though. That's the very important morsel of information lacking in this documentary.
3.43 minutes lost forever....should have trusted my instincts about this one...
Ichiban Moto videos are all meant for entertainment purposes. It's a parody guys, c'mon! lol...

it was like a synthetic highly absorbent clay. you can also used things like crushed up walnut shells etc, lava rock crush

I can't stress enough how important it is to use a red and a black wire in this process. Remember, only you can prevent electrocution!
