    I used to think this was a bit gimmicky, bordering on pointless, but that was before I got into making experimental music myself. Now, after watching your brilliant video series on it, I think it's one of the coolest things ever - and way more fun than trying to find noise on the radio to use in my music. Finding radio noise is a relatively passive thing, and with only one user controller (the frequency dial) whereas this is active, expressive and even more interesting sounding. And that's even before considering the possibilities of running audio through it or CV out of it.
    I was watching some of your Buchla series the other day, which is probably why this video got recommended to me by The Algorithm, and I must say your videos are really well made too. Good filming and editing, great narration, interesting content. I am subscribing now so I can keep up with whatever new videos you post, as they seem to be highly likely to be my cup of tea (as we say on this side of the Pond).

    I really like the sounds you can create with this and I would totally be able to make good use of it, but I'm not going to lie; I've used radios to get exactly the same kinds of sounds, playing with the tuning dial especially in the shortwave spectrum. It's still cool that some one is making those kind of sounds accessible in a more instrument-form though.

    • @automaticgainsay

    I'm kinda divided on this..
    From a consumer point of view I really cannot see any useful, musical use for this at all..
    From a manufacturer's point of view it's pure genius as nobody is ever going to know if it's broken

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      From a composer's point of view who has grown up in the traditions of tonal music and classic Electronic Music (as opposed to popular electronic music), I can't even find the boundaries of usefulness for this device. It allows you to expressively manipulate, re-imagine, and perform whatever you put into it. If you're interested wholly in traditional, tonal music and have no place for noise, etc., I can see how this may not be ideal for you.

      Hi, Charles.
      If you are incapable of perceiving music outside of traditional boundaries, that's perfectly okay.
      If you don't see a use for these sorts of sounds, that's perfectly okay.
      I also think a lot of people make garbage sounds and excuses citing uncommon compositional styles as a justification for their clueless noisemaking.

      @cdwhiley 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AutomaticGainsay Well Mr. Doty it is indeed a complex issue but yes, you’re right. I am unhappy with the segment of people you articulated so well. I spend a lot of time listening to and creating music created with electronic instruments...the doofuses that pretend it’s “non-traditional” or an “alternative approach” to traditional music are just covering for total cluelessness and propping up their own bad decisions to spend $5-$10K on gear...gear that sounds like you shut your car door on a piece of debris and are dragging it down the road. I mean what’s it hurting me? I’m guess it’s not...but it’s still annoying.

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's fair, Charles.
      But see, the whole thing about Electronic Music (the classical category, not EDM) is that composers were trying to find new ways to be expressive with new musical paradigms and new timbres. And those composers went to great effort to find new ways to say new things. And almost the entirety of music listeners in the 20th Century felt alienated by the efforts. The reasons why have to do with why we, as humans, actually appreciate sound that is organized into music. Some huge part of the population was unwilling to go along with the efforts of talented composers because they simply couldn't connect with the sounds they were making. And that's fair.
      And yes, people who can't discern the difference between the valid efforts of composers and random noise, assign "RANDOM NOISE" to everything they can't understand. But that's wrong. The listener's lack of skill, discernment, talent, etc. is not the fault of the composer. And, admittedly, it's sometimes hard for the INFORMED to connect with abstract pieces.
      The wholesale dismissal of anything that isn't consonant and traditional is no way to comment on abstract music or timbres.

    • @automaticgainsay
      @automaticgainsay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's also fair, Charles... if you don't like the music I do... that's totally reasonable. The pleasure people derive from musical efforts, even if they are educational, is important. If I do things that annoy you, you're less likely to come away from what I'm doing with knowledge.
      It's hard for me because I am a composer, and I'd MUCH rather be creating complex compositions... tonal or otherwise... in order to demonstrate the potency of these instruments for interested parties... but the average of my viewers have specific musical interests.
