  • The 125 year-old St. Martin's church in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood has a rich history. Originally built in 1894 as St. Martin's De Tours, it was later renamed St. Martin De Porres to honor the neighborhood's large African-American community. The church shut down in 1989, reopening almost a decade later in 1998 as the Chicago Embassy Church. After nearly 20 more years of services, the Chicago Embassy Church closed, leaving the historic church vacant for the past few years.

I was baptized at St Martin's and went to school there! I was always mesmerized by the inside of the church, from the stain glass to the incredible murals on the ceilings, to the statues of the saints gracing the walls! My first communion was there as well! I'm appalled at the condition I see here. 😔

Abandoned, desecrated churches make me feel such sadness. But I think it's important to honor them somehow? Idk, it's complicated thoughts and feelings. Thank you for documenting this once-beautiful church. Christ will bring us to life again. ❤

Thank you for posting this video. I was baptized and received my first communion here. I also attended and graduated from the grammar school. It was always a magnificently beautiful building to me. Still is, and I always look for it when I pass through the area. It’s very sad that there is no respect for sacred spaces. Even if it’s no longer occupied as a church, it shouldn’t mean that it’s available for desecration. I would think that it would be preserved for its distinct beauty and architectural value but alas, I realize that it would be an enormous financial responsibility, since no one has figured out how to generate funds for maintenance beyond donations. 😢

I attended St. Martin’s 1st - 8th grades. I remember straining my neck to stare at the ceiling. I’m in awe of the craftsmanship needed to build such a beautiful edifice. After 100 years, the exterior is still magnificent! What a shame if the pipe organ wasn’t saved for reuse. This is heartbreaking to see. Yes, seeing it restored would be amazing but if the millions of dollars needed could be raised to do it, who would come? I’m happy that I was able to attend the last mass held there.
Note: Sr. Julinda kicked a lot more butt than Sr. Ruth Marie.

That must have been the experience Tonya. Did cardinal Bernadine celebrate the last mass there?

I greatly enjoyed the researched background/history along with going for a walk in St. Martin’s.
The stained glass and huge interior arches are the like of which we’ll never see duplicated in our lifetime.
    St. Martin’s reminds me of
St. George church/school once located in a section of a Bridgeport neighborhood that was once predominantly Lithuanian.
Sadly, the gothic-style church was closed in 1990 and demolished not long after. I attended St. George K-2 before moving to Chicago’s southwest side.
In my opinion, St. George was second only to Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in size and presentation.
If I may suggest an idea, it would be awesome to visit and record any surviving churches in Chicago, of St. Martin’s caliber, that are still in use as well.

It's a shame nobody is stepping up to restore it...if I had the money I would.
.I hope it doesn't get torn down.

Unreal....my brother and I attended St. Martin school from KDG to 8th grade and my family attended this church on a regular basis during this time. It was such a beautiful and majestic place of worship back then. I am almost in tears to see it in this state today. Every time I come home and I'm riding on the Dan Ryan, I look for St. Martin's steeple, it always brought me a sense of comfort and nostalgia. The vibrant stained glass windows, the organs and don't forget the statue of St. Martin (I believe) on the horse that sat at the top of the church for many years. I know the cost to renovate and maintain this piece of history would be astronomical, so I will hold on to the beautiful memories of this church and school in my heart.

In 2016 it was beautiful, operated as a Baptist church. I visited in October 2016, when Open House Chicago conducted tours of the church.

It makes me ill to see this. My family would be appalled at this as they gave of themselves greatly to St. Martin's. What a travesty.

I hate to see old churches like this fall into disrepair. They could probably stand a lot longer but, when the copper thefts rip off all the copper flashing outside and then the water gets in and destroys the interior gets destroyed. So sad to see if happing to so many historical buildings.

This is so sad to see. I spent headstart through 8th grade here. We loved our church and school. The vandalism is sad to see. Wish Sr. Ruth Marie could come back and whoop all those who wrote graffiti on the walls. Thanks so much for making this video.

The heating and basic maintenance alone would break most churches.

It’s a beautiful old church but probably past it’s prime. Like you said I don’t think there are any local churches that could afford upkeep of such a large structure.
