  • These new series are a massive game changer!!! When I got these drills from Alex Lely in 2013, I won the World Pool Masters, went on to win the World title in 2014 plus another 5 tournaments in a row. They made me a much more complete player and now I want to share them with You!
An overview of Safety Drills The Pro's Don't Want You To Know About! Episode 1: 4 Squares
    Rules for the drill:
    - Cue ball must cross the middle of the table minimum 1x
    - Cue ball must land in one of the 4 squares where the middle of the cue ball has to cross the zone line
    - You may kick at the object ball
    - On a scratch, the cue ball is placed on the headspot
    - When the object ball is accidentally pocketed, it comes on the footspot.
    - When you score a point, you keep shooting

I do this drill 15 mins a session. It paid off huge!!! I enjoy that the drills you show are designed to keep the player engaged. You do 8 in a row, then you want to beat it, then you hit 9... 13.... then your wife is complaining because you just wasted your Saturday pushing just 2 balls around the pool table. Lol. You are doing great things for the game Niels!!! Thank you!

My safety play was non-existent. I'd take low percentage shots I always felt like I had to try to make something and never wanted to play safe I was a very aggressive player. Alot of make it and look amazing or miss it and be ran off the table moments. Thanks to some old timers (who ALWAYS used to beat me) giving me a hard time. I began working on my safeties and moving into my lines and shot choices have changed too. Alll of your videos have elevated my game. It's 50/50 now against them. Took a while but it paid off quicker than I thought. Keep up the great content the drills are hard but work well. And honestly it was worth the work when they went from thinking it's an auto win playing me to them racking more often. Amazing content keep up the good work and thank you.

This drill is the real deal folks. Adding this to my routine has upped my safety game exponentially after just a couple weeks. I’m seeing so many more safeties and executing them so much better now. Combined with the other video’s “big brother little brother” game is just perfect.

If I may make a brief suggestion to your drill… if your skill level is such that you are missing way too many times, especially in a row, stop and repeat the same shot until you make it more than miss and only then, continue forward to the next position. I use two small coins to mark ball positions. Great drill. Never boring.

Niels - really loved this video and found myself coming back to it for a refresher. For an amateur player like myself, do you think there is any benefit to going into the negative when trying to get to a certain number ahead? Or should I just stop at 0? Thanks!!

  • @dryclimateutah
    @dryclimateutah 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey Niels. I love your videos; they are having some of the most impact on my game improvement. My neighbor lets me practice on his table, but he has really slow cloth. When I play in league we play on 7' diamonds with really fast cloth. Is it a waste of time for me to try to practice this drill on my neighbors table? It seems like the friction of the cloth doesn't even provide the same ratios for distance of the cue ball and object ball stopping because so much speed is lost during the longer distances.

What do you think of Fargo as a training aid? Not the handicapping system, the practice game which is much like Equal Offense. You break them up and shoot anything until you reach a point where you choose to switch to shooting in rotation, in Equal Offense the switch point is mandated. 1 point per ball in the random phase, 2 points per ball in the rotation phase.
Of course when you miss the rake is over.

When I play someone who typically plays in bars or just occasionally-like the 4 people who disliked this vid-and they mention that a safety is a “dirty” shot. I ask them if they’re playing basketball and the other team has the ball, do you run around the court with your hands down at your sides? If you do that, you aren’t playing defense, and you’re going to lose, even if you’re a good shooter.
So if you don’t play defense, it’ll be the same here-you’ll lose. After that, I offer a couple of tips for playing EASY safeties vs. handing me the game. The day they roll the cue ball tight against the back of another ball-then they really get it.
You’ve got to be able to play safe, or you’re only playing half of the game. Controlling two or more balls requires practice and creativity. (And watching how and when the pros do it. They’ll sometimes play safe on a shot that every amateur would take, and you need to know why.)
A good safety battle is a dimension of pool which is kind of rare, but really satisfying.

I don't know if you shot those shots specifically for this video, but your responses to messing them up were funny. They sure appeared legitimate, good job. I suspect your real responses to these shots would be to set them up a half dozen more times and leave your subconscious thinking "I got this sucker" rather than "I missed this last time". I see Efren do that all the time on a missed shot just after a match end, and I suspect he may go do it more, afterward, and for all the shots he should have made, but didn't. Just guessing here, though.
I heard Jeremy Jones make a comment while commentating a match the other day that amateurs set up a shot to practice until they MAKE it, pros set up that same shot many more times, until they don't MISS it.
Love your 'character' sign. Subconscious training? That is a very good drill, I will incorporate it.

Billiards playing cannons a great game to practice this type of thing where instead of aiming for an area you're aiming for a ball after contact. Think it's called carom in Europe.

Yes only difference I find is the weight of the balls. The way the balls react is different from pool balls. But in general billiards is awesome for pool!

Why would I want to put the OB near a corner pocket? Doesn't seem like a good safety

This drill is only about CB control. I'm sure on future videos in the series he'll cover OB control.

Think of it getting behind little walls of balls sometimes they’re on the line and sometimes even closer. So you need to hit that extra rail to get under them but without scratching 💪🏼😄
