    I absolutely love the fact that other repaair logs start off with "THOU SHALT CHECK VOLTAGES"... and Luke starts off with "Let's just ram that adapter in there and switch it on..."

  • @nightbirdds
    @nightbirdds 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've never seen anyone do that with a CPU before. Thinking about it, it makes sense, but I guess the thinking would normally be, those pins are gone, what else might be wrong with it?
    Just goes to show that trying stuff can save you a lot of work sometimes.
    Of course, this all speaks to the fact that you've had a whole lot of experience with Arcade PCBs and can ind of figure stuff out by looking at symptoms.
    Ever had one go bang when you turned it on, though?

    • @lukemorse1
      @lukemorse1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think someone removed the good one and tossed in this one based on appearance or maybe because the pins were broke off so it didnt boot. Hard to tell I think . Luckily Ive never had a cpu pop before but I have put in a capacitor backwards and that really did pop! and spray electrolytic fluid out of the top. Pretty surprising situation. Thanks for watching!

    • @korgied
      @korgied 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people are very eager to start with replacing parts and would never have even tried this CPU but I am glad Luke saved it because there are only so many old parts in the world and we should try to make them last as long as we can. That said, I've seen repair people go so far as grinding the package of a chip (keep in mind that inside the chip, the core called the "die" is really pretty small and most of the package is just to break out the connections into the pins) and soldering to the internal connecting wires. There's a video about a Mercedes keyfob repair where the tech did exactly that.
      With jellybean chips that are cheap and still sold today, replace them. With bad capacitors, definitely replace them (some people save them and reuse - this really bothers me). But limited stock chips, try to reuse.

    Hey Luke, I have a Pit-Fighter pcb and the top 3 and 4 scores are being erased when I turn it off. They go bsck to 0 (zero) when I turn the pcb back on. The scores 1 to 4 should keep recorded, while the scores from 5 to 10 go back to their default values. Do you know what could I do to fix this one? I don't know which chips stores the first 4 scores. Thanks!!

    Hi Luke,
    Another great video and a question to ask , could Atari have made a port/conversion of Road Riot for the Atari Jaguar?

    • @korgied
      @korgied 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see why not. The Jaguar had a 68k (plus the Tom+Jerry). The code would probably need to change a bit, but I bet it would've been an easy port. Jaguar ran the 68k around 13MHz but as long as this board didn't run it at 16 or 20 MHz it should be easy. If they DID run it at those speeds, they might need to optimize the code, remove something, or port some of it to run on Tom+Jerry. Given this game is 1991 (according to what TH-cam is saying under the video anyway), it's probably running more in the range of 8 to 12MHz I'd think. (Edit: I just saw another commenter saying this board runs at 12MHz)
      A lot of Jaguar games did wind up running on the 68k because many developers did not want to learn to use T+J (or were not given enough time to learn it).
