  • Fearchar mac an t-sagairt founded the Clan Ross, suppressed two major rebellions, saved a royal army from destruction, integrated into the feudal system, and came from a kindred with a very unique name in Scotland. This video is just a taste of a podcast episode that contains a lot more content.

Earl William Ross came up in my ancestry. As well as Isabella Ross. Very cool. My ancestor William Ross married into my maternal Grandmothers family who are Welsh. He was killed in the Senghenydd Mining disaster. I traced him back to the Second Earl William Ross.

the 1st to 4th Earl of Ross (not counting the Mormaers of Ross, like Macbeth/Macheth) are all from the same Bloodline, from the Scoti Kings! Regrettably Lass! Ancestry just doesn't Work the Same for Females as it does Males these Days. See I have the same Y Chromosome (Presumably, we'd Hope I have a Y Chromosome although a small amount of people with Man Bits Don't, believe it or not) as the Earls of Ross to a Bloodline of the Scoti Kings! From Father to Son and So Forth throughout time till the Y Chromosome Mutants out of existence like some surmise will happen in a Million Years without any major Mutations. But see for Females, there is not One Chromosome that passes indefinitely (although a YX Male can Produce a XX Male with all the Man Bits, surely the exception not the rule, but without that exception) from Parent to offspring, but Female give one of two random X Chromosome to their Daughters, either one of two, and do the math on that, outside of isolated populations and in this Global Soceities for Centuries now, and Population Mixing for thousands of years before to many various degrees, there is no keeping track of the X Chromones like that anymore like could be done in a small insolated population where one could find matriarchies. You Might not even have either one of your Grandmothers X Chromones let alone any further past, but a Male will always have his Fathers and so forth till the near Dawn of Man! From his Father to Son!

I have been doing family genealogy and was saddened that a member of the Ross clan came from Scotland and was killed in a mining disaster in the Welsh Valleys. I traced his ancestry back to Clan Ross. Yes I am Femsle. Very aware of that. Genetics. Not interested. Just found his lineage and story fascinating and sad. I don't care about genetics!

    Thank-you for the video!
YDNA testing has shown that a number of living Ross men are of Norse descent and related to the Matheson's of Loch Alsh. Fearcher Mac an t-Satig means "son of the priest" alluding to his Ó Beólláin descent from the hereditary Abbots of Applecross. The Loch Alsh peninsula is immediately south of Applecross. Both of these areas are just across the sound from the Isle of Skye, which around the year 1200 was Norse territory.
My impression is that at that time, Easter Ross was occupied by a Clan that worshipped Saint Andrew, hence their name. Fearchar was not of the Clan Andrew, but became their leader after suppressing a rebellion by presenting the head of 5 rebels to the King. At first Fearchar was Knighted for his loyalty, but eventually made Earl of Ross and his Clan then adopted the Ross name as well.
Norse and Icelandic saga's describe a Norse King Bjolan as ruler of the Hebrides. Melding the two languages and cultures together over time, it's easy to see how the name Ó Beólláin was adopted as the letter combination "Bj", while common in Norse, is not in Gaelic.
It's also worth noting that in 1262 Fearchar's son Uilleam along with Kjarnac (considered the ancestor of Clan Matheson), lead a raid on the Isle of Skye. It was such a savage act, that the King of Norway launched an ill fated invasion of Scotland, which ended with his death and the eventual transfer of the Hebrides to Scotland.

Well allot of Ros' renamed themselves to Ross' like when coming to America and the Sort. You'll Find some Ross' are Jewish or Italian, but Again, those are Name Adoptions.. Rosenbergs and Rossi's, but regardless the Majority of Ross' in the Western World are related and come from the War Masters and Chiefs the Earls of Ross!

@Randy Ross Agree. YDNA testing though has shown that there are several groups of Ross men that have been using that surname for a long time... My group is not the oldest. There is another group that Dates to around 1100 which I believe are descended from Malcolm
of that time and were clan Andrew for a while.

my 5th great grandfather on my mother's side was John Ross born 1760. A descendant, my great great grandmother Mary Ellen Ross was burie in my home town of KIllyleagh County Down. my mother's mother was named Isobel and quite a few generations back from my maternal grandmother use Isobel or Issabella, my mum actually named her cat Bella, whether coincidentally or not. i moved to a village about 17 miles from my hometown, Castlewellan, not knowing the Ross family connection was as big as it was. Call it the sstrangest coincidence in the world but my house is beside the church where my great great great grandfather Francis Ross married my great great great grandmother, Jane Hamilton who may well be descended from the Hamilton's of Killyleagh Castle......

Ferchar mac in tSagairt or as I call my Ancestor the Once War Master of Scotland, Cousin to the Laird of the Isle, Cousin to the Scottish King, Husband to the Queen of Mann, the Chief of Clan Arias, the 1st Earl of Ross Fearchar, the Son of the Priest, with Son of the Priest being a Title, he was the heir to the Hereditary Priests and Rulers the Red Priests from Apple Cross in Wester Ross, who Ancient Kings would Toss their Daughters too (that's where the War Master Fearchar came from, Mac in tSagairt means Son of the Priest and was effectively a Title). As for my Bloodlines Origins (it was the 4th Earl of Ross Hugh Ross who 1st took on the Surname, a Surname protected by law twice over, even after the Advent of Surnames, all Ross' that could not Prove their Pedigree by Paperwork became Mackenzies! Oh the Sheer Horror!) Clan Arias is said to be able to be traced from Spain, to Stopping Across the Roman Empire with the Goths to even revisiting Eygpt, all before the Scoti Invasion of Ireland and Scotland. The only way for us not to be Scoti would mean the Scoti made a Druid (or Royal Pict) Bloodline Chief of Clan Arias, and I just don't really see that as all too possible or probable. Apple Cross in Wester Ross is just North of the Initial Invasion of the Scoti, and wasn't very Pictish Territory. Declaration of Arbraoth sealed 4th by my Ancestor the Chief of Ross the Earl of Ross says we are Sycthians and clearly alludes to us being the Lost Tribes, as we Bragged about Destroying the Picts in it, and the Picts surely went from near 100% the Population to now 10%, so that happened, and if the Red Priests were Picts more like Druids in that Case damn they would have to have been cool to be inducted into the Scoti Clan System as some of it's Main Members. Now Fearchar is like a Founder of the Great Clan Ross Clan Ross is all the Gentry too, but Clan Arias (Anrias) is an Anceinct People going Far into the Past, our Story Picks up in Eygpt, Eygpt the Anceinct Melting Pot, so it gets to a Point, who even knows Clan Arias even comes from and how far that Stretches into the Past, to times unmemorable. Now Fearchar was his Cousin the Kings Right Hand, becoming the 1st Scottish Earl being second of any note to give way to the new more Anglo or Norse Political System, because before it was Mormears and Mormeardoms, which Macheth (Macbeth) was the last Mormear of Ross we have any record of, infact Mormear of a Few Places and Thane (War Master) of Scotland so his Ascension to the Throne was no Big Surprise, Macheth was said not to be of my direct Bloodline. And Fearchar as War Master raised 10,000 Fighting Men from the now Earldom of Ross and with his Personal Armada and his cousin the Kings Troops, laid waste to the Viking Lairds in and around Scotland, crushing them one by one, with the War Master Fearchar known to Lead the Chargers! (Or so I've Read of Once) and stealing the Viking Lairds Lands and Gold Greatly Expanding Ross-shire like into the Isle of Lewis and making who would become to be known as the Ross' the Richest and most Powerful Family in the Highlands for Generations! Now what happened to the Title of the Earl of Ross? Well when the new King just said he is giving all his Scottish Titles to his Son (all Stolen Titles I may add, an awful thing to brag about, just like spitting in Scottish faces by saying as such he did) he did not mean the Title of Earl of Ross! See it was the 4th Earl of Ross Hugh Ross, who died in the Crusades who was the Last True Earl of Ross. It was the 1st Stuart King Robert II who married the 4th Earl of Ross' daughter Euphemia Ross Queen of the Scots! Who stole the Title Earl of Ross for his Son, a Title a Countess Ross' Son or Descendant the Laird of the Isle the Earl of Ross took back by force, but in pretty sure the Title was put to Rest after that, and the Title of Earl of Ross and the Earldom of Ross with it is the best Title up for Grabs, a title mee Cousin the Chief of the Hereditary Coat of Arms of Ross, Barron of Balnagown David Campbell Ross of Ross is surely eyeing, who may be willing to tell you the Official Narrative on Ross from Ross! And there's a Ross Historical District in Tain Ross County, there's a Ross Museum there, I've chatted with on Facebook when I Had it, who Probably be helpful for you getting the official narrative and not whatever random things contradictory to each People say about us from Website Views to Slander! But don't forget, Fearchar's Children never Stopped Pushing that Ball Up the Court. So I'll leave you with this... The Star Spangled Banner, the National Anthem, is from when a War Master of Ross Major General Robert Ross defied the Kings Orders, Marched on DC! Sat down to Dinner at the White House and Burnt it to the Ground, in the same Tandem Assault with the Fleet which Rockets Red Glare Burst in the Air but the Flag 1st Styled by Col George Ross' last to sign the Declaration of Independence by date neice in law Betsy Ross Still Waived!!!

Woaw we are closely related, I descend for (Hustan) Hugh Ross also... -> william (son of hugh) -> Alexander -> Guillaume -> Laughelin -> Nil -> Alexis-Wilfrid -> Charles Eddy (grand father)
but something is missing around here before it goes to my grandfather
but I have an old family tree paper with Scotland in the background as an image from a sister or a brother of my grand-father and it goes back to the Son of the Son of hugh... which is Alexander which was married to Helene Baine the 9 January 1764, he immigrated with his father on a boat to North America on "The Hector" in 15 September 1773 on the coast of Nova Scotia (New Scotland) before 1776.. and way before Canada was created and the descendants (mine) help create Quebec first towns..

I’m not familiar with Scottish Clans but as I’ve been researching a lot lately, there’s a connection between Rosses and Gillanders and to help track the early beginning it looks like the relation with St. Andrew actually comes from the Gillanders influence.

The War Master and Chief the Earl of Ross Fearchar was the Kings Right Hand after saving him from a Boggy Ambush, for Fearchar had Claim to the Throne Himself! And could of Took it Right There! Took the King and his small retinue that was left! And than his Rightful Claim to the Throne, most likely throwing Scotland into Civil War! But Fearchar could never do such to his Cousin he rushed with all haste to save from the ambush he was just informed of, and with such, Fearchar became his Cousin, the Scottish King's Right Hand as War Master!!! (Thane)
