Small note, the "Legend Summarized" playlist focuses on some specific books. Some of Red's best works on mythologies are instead in the "Miscellaneous Myths" playlist, where she focusses on a specific character or a short story.
For example, there is one 27min video on Loki specifically, which goes into the details about "what we actually know and what are the theories about what could have been misinterpreted". And there is another earlier video (and shorter: 5min) on the story "Loki's Wager".

It also explicithizes (explicates? Explicitly says) that the ‘suspected’ co-opting of Norse mythos to Christianity was entirely on purpose, might have featured Loki as a _not_ Satan role, and even the Edda being phrased as it was all tied back to like one to three dudes tasked with converting AC to DC with no current.

It's a small detail, but I couldn't help but giggle at Loki's mug. "Best horse mum" 🤣 (Loki gave birth to Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipnir after shapeshifting into a mare to lure the stallion Svadilfari away from the builder who was building the fortifications for the Aesir, thus making him unable to claim his payment of Freya, the Sun and the Moon).

As a fan of Norse Myth, I can kinda clarify some things that Red skipped for Brevity's sake.
    - Tolkein took the names of the Dwarves and used them in LOTR because he was a HUGE fan of Norse myth despite being a devout Christian. In fact, his translation of the Poetic and Prose Eddas among other Nordic texts are what we are using now for reference. And the reason he used them in LOTR is because he wanted an English mythological epic featuring aspects of cultures that had contributed to the history of England, including the Danes (may the soul of King Cnut the Great rest with Christ in Heaven.)
    - The murder of Ymir is pretty big because A.) Odin, Vili and Ve were children of the Jotun Bestla and the God Borr, which kinda made them the first "Morally Neutral" thing, B.) Ymir was sort of the Allfather of all Jotuns, seeing as they came from him, and C.) The death of Ymir was what allowed the Aesir to create Mankind from an Ash and Elm (yeah weird story.) So basically the Jotuns want revenge for grampa Ymir's murder but that vengeance will brutally destroy all of Earth.
-The reason why King Thrym bought Thor's disguise was because, and I'm dead serious, he had terrible eyesight. And for extra laughs: Thor hated Every. Single. Moment. He was in that dress. For extra Extra laughs: when Thrym grew suspicious from Thor eating and drinking a literal year's worth of produced foods, the eyes burning with HATRED, and even his extreme strength; Loki chalked it up to, and I'm still dead serious here: "Pre-Wedding Jitters."
-The Giant, aka The Master Builder, basically wanted to take over the world with the Sun, Moon and Freyja, who is a Vanir goddess of Beauty, Fertility and WAR! (Because the Nords wanted at least 5 war gods on hand at all times) and Thor only killed him when he revealed himself to be a Jotun... after coming back from a Giants Genociding vacation in celebration of getting Mjolnir. Plus, this was how Odin got the eight-legged horse named Slepinir because of a series of events that Loki would terrorize me for recounting. Like, "make me beg for death and deny me such relief" terror.
    - Odin as a god was also the hunter of knowledge and wisdom because of one thing: he wanted to know how to prevent Ragnarok. He stabbed himself with a spear and hung himself from a tree to learn Runic magic, gouged out amd sacrificed his eye to a well to gain wisdom of things beyond his comprehension, revived the head of Mimir to plan for the end, stole the blood mead made from the knowledge god Kvasir to gain artistry; you get it, he covets smarts.
    - The "Threatening to kill Gerth" thing was changed to match the death of Freyr by changing it to having Freyr's sword be his wedding gift to her.
    - Loki, outside of being the Trickster god, was also the father of Monsters. Two notable ones are Jormungandr, the world serpent that's eating his own tail and would have eaten Midgard, and Fenrir, the Great Wolf who ate Tyr's hand and would eat and kill Odin. Don't worry, Vidarr would avenge him like all good sons would.
    - There's a theory I remember hearing that the Ferryman was Odin just trying to f*** with his kid, because Loki ain't the only jokester.
    - A number of Aesir are descended from Jotuns, like Odin (mother was Bestla, a Mountain Jotun), Thor (his mother was Jord, a Jotun Giantess that was the personification of Earth, hence why he's also the guardian of Midgard), and Tyr. And one thing Red forgot to mention about Hymir: he hates Thor for A.) Being the one that's killed THOUSANDS of Jotuns, and B.) For pretty much eating three of his five cows and using a fourth's head as fishing bait. That horde of Jotuns that chased both Tyr and Thor was actually led by Hymir.
    - The Master Sword comparison to Mjolnir isn't quite true as it's more like you'd rip your arms off trying to lift it. In fact, Thor uses special equipment to help him lift it: Megingjord, which is basically a magic power-lifting belt, and Jarngreipr, which are special iron gauntlets that help with handling the damned thing and catching it when it flies back.
    - Red also HEAVILY played down Freyja's response to Thrym's demands. What she REALLY did was get so furious that she hucked her amber amulet to the ground, shattered it, and the flying chunks SELF IMMOLATED AND CAUGHT THE HALLS OF ASGARD ON FIRE!!! Yeah, there's a very good reason she's one of five gods of war.
For further Nordic fun, I definitely recommend watching Jake Doubleyoo's series of Norse myth vids alongside Red's Norse myth vids. For extra fun, I recommend Brothers of Metal, who retell parts of Norse Myth as Power Metal songs.
*Had to correct stuff based on Odin's parentage and Loki being a fire god. My bad, I apologize.

    • @lucariomew365
      @lucariomew365 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I loved most of this, but you made a common modern error. The Loki association of Loki/Lopt as a god of fire is unequivocally rejected by the majority of Norse experts. Extensive analysis of the surviving texts and oral traditions provides no substantiation for such a claim. The confusion between Loki and the fire god Logi, perpetuated by a mistranslation, has been thoroughly debunked by scholars, even dating back to the 19th century.
Loki is distinctly characterized as a the creator of fishing nets, a provocateur of stories, a being of deception, and the manipulator of fate's intricate knots. However, there is no basis to assert that he holds any dominion over fire. This misguided association is akin to the modern-day fallacy of equating Hades with the Devil and fire, despite the explicit contradictions within the remaining myths and oral traditions themselves.
In light of the comprehensive research and scholarly consensus, it is imperative to acknowledge that Loki's role as a fire god finds no support in the authentic Norse mythology sources.

@@lucariomew365 Wasn't Logi just an illusion created by Utgarda-Loki?

    • @lucariomew365
      @lucariomew365 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@b3rz3rk3r9 Contrary to popular belief, Logi (aka Halogi) was not an illusion but a jotun with a documented lineage. Moreover, the Icelandic, Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish translations of his name can be traced back to an archaic German word meaning "blaze" or "flames." In Gylfaginning, Logi's consuming nature during the eating competition, even devouring the wooden plates, further emphasizes his association with fire. In that same story, Utgard-Loki explains that Logi personifies wildfire itself, symbolizing literal fire embodied as a jotun by using a play on words. This interpretation is often misunderstood by modern audiences, who take it too literally (falsely assuming that Logi wasn't a real being).
In the Icelandic Flateyjarbók, specifically the tale called Hversu Noregr byggðist, Logi's lineage is described. He is portrayed as the son of Fornjótr, and each of Logi's siblings possesses dominion over different forces of nature. One rules over wind, another over water and the seas, while Logi himself is attributed as the god of fire. Logi is also said to have a wife named Glod, who is also a jotun and sometimes referred to as a goddess of embers through marriage. Together, they are believed to have two children, although I can't recall the specifics (I think he had 2 daughters, but it's been a minute).
Furthermore, in the thorsteins saga Víkingssonar, Logi's full name is mentioned as Halogi. It is worth noting that a ruling family in northern Norway has made claims of descent from Logi. While this may seem peculiar, it aligns with the common tendency of royalties and monarchies around the world to assert their lineage from various pantheons of gods, using it as a justification for their rule. In the case of this particular royal family, they attribute their radiantly vibrant hair (I assume they are gingers), beautiful features, and muscular physiques as evidence of their divine ancestry to the god of fire.
It is important to examine these sources and contextualize Logi's character based on the information available, acknowledging his association with fire as an integral aspect of his mythological attributes.

"What's Opera, Doc?" (the Merrie Melodies cartoon referenced) spoofed three Wagner operas. The relevant one to "Kill da wabbit!" is "Die Walküre" from the Ring Cycle.
And apparently, a LOT of our current "oh, look at the Viking stuff!" clichés come from Wagnerian opera.
And for the Final Fantasy crowd, Jörmungandr has a lot of names, including "the Midgard Serpent" (Miðgarðsormr). And way back in 1997 the English localization team was bad so they came up with "Midgar Zolom" because they transliterated the katakana (ミドガルズオルム) instead of Googling it, because Google didn't exist yet.

She didn't say it, but Freyr had to gave up his sword to the servant as a prize for going to the Giantess. That sword is one of the most powerful weapons in Norse mythology, like the Mjölnir, because it's able to fight on it's own, so the owner of the sword don't have to hold it. So Freyr gave up his most valuable weapon for love/happiness and that's why he will die during Ragnarok by Surtr, the fire giant. Practically he gave his life for love. Even that Freyr fell in love was his fault, since he sit on Odin's throne from where he watches over the 9 worlds, and bacause of this he noticed the giantess and fell in love so hard, nothing else could make him happy beside if she married him.

1:09 The loss of ancient knowledge is overwhelming when you think about it, but the Library of Alexandria gets far more attention than it should. It's more of a symbol for all that lost material.
-There's no proof that it ever burned at all: the thing about it burning when Julius Caesar was in Egypt is a modern interpretation of the known fact that some buildings in the harbor of Alexandria *did* burn during a battle against Cleopatra's brother, among which there may have been one of the Library's annex building.
-The Library probably just wasted away over time, due to neglect and lack of state funding caused by the small growing pains the Roman Empire was going through.
-There were a lot of other ancient libraries whose existence is completely overshadowed by the one in Alexandria: the Library of Pergamon (modern-day Turkey), Constantinople (Istanbul), and of course Rome and Athens. Like Alexandria, what ultimately killed a lot of them is what threatens a lot of libraries today: neglect and underfunding.
Kaz Rowe has a great vid which deconstructs the myth of the Library of Alexandria and explains what historians think probably happened given the scarcity of sources for the late Antique to early medieval period.

24:15 so... Red gets this wrong too. No, it won't kill you if you're not strong enough. You have to understand that mjolnir is one of the results of a bet Loki ends up making with a pair of dwarves, Brok and Sindri. He bet the dwarf brothers that they couldn't make gifts greater than the gifts Loki had comissioned from the dwarf king for the Asgards to apologize for Loki-shenanigans. (He does this a lot; Loki does a prank, prank goes too far, Loki goes on a quest to make up for prank) The prize the bet Loki makes with the dwarves is his head, and since nothing irrates a dwarf more than saying their work is subpar to someone else's they readilly agree. Unfortunately for Loki, Brok and Sindri's gifts are supper rad, so in an effort to win, Loki disrupts the crafting process of the last gift, Mjolnir. This causes Mjolnir to come out with a flaw in its design. Essentially, Mjolnir was meant to be a two-handed battle maul for Thor, but the handle came out too short and could only be weilded with one hand. Basically, Thor got a two-handed weapon, designed for him, that could only be comfortably weilded with one hand. Thor gets around this by having a glove and belt that doubles his strength and grip.

Second, Job is NOT Yahweh, or Jehovah, the Abrahamic God, but is the focus of the oldest written book of the Bible/Torah, aptly named the Book of Job. This is probably where the cult of Yahweh started to split from other Semitic deities at the time.

Loki spewing random insults at the end isn't as nonsense as it seems. Sure, he's doing an awful job of it, by dint of just pulling burns out of his ass, but what he's SUPPOSED to be soing is actually an ancient Norse practice known as _Flyting_ wherein the participants took turns insulting one another in rhyme until one or the other got so pissed off that they couldn't respond.
That's right... ANCIENT NORSE RAP BATTLES!

Tolkien took a lot of things from Norse like city names around here translated to English is like half the cities in Lotr. Actually weapons from the Viking age are super well done and strong its thought that the Norse mixed blood or similar into the process and unknowingly made a steel like sword which is why we keep finding swords in pretty good condition all things considered, that not to say the made actually made steel they didn't just better iron sword and the process wasn't understood so the swords came in all sorts of strengths. Gerth not Girth. Marriages in Viking society had a lot more rules and laws attached like they could get divorced and if he was not a prober man that satisficed her she could leave with his stuff first when Christianity came did a lot of those laws go away
