    I saw an ig plant account that used the clear plastic tubing meant to protect fluorescent tube light bulbs to build poles. They cut it down the center and used netting in the front. The moss maintained its dampness longer and they did not have to deal with the roots tangling in a lot of netting. It also looked very nice.

      Part 2 of the lazy moss pole will be coming out soon where I use clear plastic sheets to make them! Definitely way more humidity locking than net, but a bit more difficult to make in my experience. Interesting that someone used a light tube! Never in a million years would I have thought of that.

    I love this idea! I’ve always lost patience with moss poles bc when it’s time to chop, you lose all the roots that have grown into the pole. This is very easily de and reconstructed, so I think it’s a great alternative

    Thanks a million!!! I just ordered everything I need. I didn't like the idea of buying pricy premade plastic poles and later have to buy extentions or risk cutting them up. This is genus and makes so much sense!! I'm very excited.

    Love this idea. I've always been afraid of moss poles..(Seems like a pest hotel 🏨). Might give this one a try though, given it's simplicity. I live the way you layer substrates as well,, I just don't understand how you choose which ones for which plants. I live mixing my own substrates, mine are the usual: coco coir, bark, perlite, horticultural charcoal, sometimes moss and worm castings. Pudge trying to trick you🙃, so cute...my dog does the same in 15min increments for 45minutes prior to dinner and stomps back to his bed with a sigh! You have me looking for a pug at our shelter on the regular. I have a handsome American staffordshire terrier mixed with Frenchie, they're called Frenchie-staff we rescued him from the shelter, but he needs a friend. He's such a love 🥰❤🐛! FYI: I know you're shy, but you are beautiful💕

    I'm going to use this idea with my next repot. One of my biggest gripes with moss poles is lack of stability. I swear a month after I do the whole thing, I see the pole leaning and it drives me batty. I feel like the pole would be even sturdier if you put some of that mesh down in the pot. That width could help with stability. I'm going to try it!

    I feel like I have just had my mind blown open!! I normally do not use a moss pole for all the reasons you said. I force my plant up a solid pole with velcro ties so that I can change it....knowing they will not get as large but it breaks my heart to break the roots!!

    Don't worry about talking too much hahaha Adhd and I have got all the content I consume at 2x speed 😂😂 sth I did cus I just didn't have time or money and aesthetics isn't such an issue yet, is I cut up a few plastic bottles to make the D shaped back, which I then slightly reshaped with heat. I then made holes in the cut up bottles to overlap/make them longer and connected the holes I made with zipties.... for the mesh I just used the plastic bags you have left over from buying a large sack of oranges/potatoes/onions etc... I'll switch up to what you did (mainly cus it looks nicer) but my Philo Splendid is loving the budget pole 😂😂🤷‍♂️😅

    Pudge, you were born for the camera. I like both the root growth and the easiness of getting them back out of your lazy moss pole--you're basically air-layering the whole plant. My plants are all out in my living room and part of the decor, though, so I don't know whether I want to be looking at this all day (I have the same problem with regular moss poles).

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would definitely not use any lazy poles outside of any greenhouse because some of them can be super ugly 😆 I used to be really neurotic about my greenhouses looking really nice but now I just want something practical that makes the plants happy- mostly because I am just lazy these days hahaha

    question: once a plant outgrows the moss pole, can you just keep clipping, or topping it off to produce a fuller plant without having to change it out to another taller pole?

  • @OrdinaryPlantGirl

    I really like the lazy Moss pool idea! That was one of my issues with moss poles besides the fact that I can't keep them significantly moist was that the roots would get tangled up and it would be really hard to get them out of the pole. Thank you for this!

    I’m 99% positive that the Philodendron sp Colombia is a terrestrial plant! I don’t think it’ll climb the moss pole like a climbing philo would
    Sure, sometimes the growth pattern of some terrestrial plants may “look” like they’re climbing, but in reality they’ll never climb a pole as they don’t create aerial roots but rather terrestrial roots

    I love this! What was it that you sprinkled on the roots? What does it do?
    Watching this gave me the idea to try this with clear plastic shelf liner. I live in Arizona so I think having a moss pole structure that can retain a little more moisture between watering would help.

    I need to learn how to water spag moss just right. It's easy to wring out until just damp at the beginning but once planted? I deal with rot 🙄 wahh. I want to go to no-drainage but I struggle even with the holes.

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually use a squeeze bottle to re-dampen my moss! My method is I squeeze water around the perimeter of the pot to get all the edges, and then I zig zag across the top of the pot to saturate the rest. Don't worry if there are dry areas, because the water will disperse throughout the substrate over time. Just make sure it's not packed too tightly! I did do a video about sphagnum moss if you haven't watched it yet- I quickly go over watering!

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Kathryn! Thank you so much for saying that. As far as your suggestion, I have a little copy and pasted message I use to address this since it’s actually requested of me very often 😅
      As a creator it’s important to remember boundaries, and for me being extremely self-conscious and having my ADHD triggered when I can see myself speaking (can’t keep a train of thought / fumbling over words), I have to find a healthy balance of what works for me. I don’t show my face for any other reason than the fact I’m just not comfortable. I understand that style isn’t for everyone, and I’ve accepted that this TH-cam channel will likely never get as big as other channels because of this, but I’m just not willing to put myself in an uncomfortable position for the sake of creating videos. If I didn’t create videos without showing my face, I wouldn’t have been able to put out as many as I already have.. So if I’ve made the choice to create content that makes ME feel good and is still enjoyable for a much smaller audience. I do fully understand where you’re coming from and know there are people out there who cannot watch videos without making a connection with a face, but I thought it was important to voice where I’m coming from too and why I film the way that I do. Hope that makes sense!
