I genuinely think that his high-pitched voice is because he was speaking loudly for most of the time. Everyone knows that when you try to speak louder, in higher db, you will sound more high-pitch, and vice versa. So in this interview, he was just speaking more quietly, hence the lower tone

It's tragic that he was trapped in that mindset and could not process his childhood. But I can understand it. Just seems like such a waste, because he was a genius without peer. It's not super deep naturally, he has a softer voice but not super high. he was going through a lot during this time. The accusations, and the lack of sleep, plus being medicated. All of that will take a toll on your body. What you're hearing is him dragging his voice like one would in the morning out of bed.
He sounds normal. Still a tenor, still like himself, just more casual and relaxed. Still, one HECK of a live singing voice.
