  • MMO Ashes Of Creation has a lot of archetypes and the summoner is the most anticipated of the remaining ones to be shown before Alpha 2. Some footage in this video is from MMO Guild Wars 2, merely used as reference.

    Variety, thats what I am after, which I hope is delivered by augments.
    1. Class with one strong pet that you have a full control of (movement, behaviour, skill that can also be slotted in players bar). It doesnt disappear when you summon it, but its weaker than all the other pets
    2. Summons that don't last and are summoned as a casting telegraphed ability. Lets say you summon ethereal ghost rider that leaves a dmg trail or a elemental that falls from the sky and leaves a hole on a summoning spot. Does a lot of dmg, but disappears and you have to recast it after a while.
    3. Class with small pets that acts like zerg. I am not talking 2-3 of them, but 10-15 the size of an imp that has control mechanic of game call Overlord i mentioned where before, where you drag your mouse across the screen and they follow the cursor.
    4. A class that absorbs the summon. Maybe it fights with you for a while, but if you are threatened it fuses into you for defense-Like a Venom.
    5. Noncombat summons that are there for utility (Scouting-like hawk in Assassins Creed games, maybe an eagle that drags you from the danger.
    6. Summons that are just ethereal copies of your weapon. Like a Spiritual Weapon in DnD.
    I could go on for days.

      You forgot static 10 hp ones that are immune to magic.
      Shaman has to have totems and I don't care that its primary archetype is cleric. I will riot in front of Intrepid if they arent there...

    id love to see multiple deferent pets acting like tools for a job, wow does this quite well with demologoy warlock, pets are dynamic but i cant wait to see how they tackle this.

      @@Nyce-Gaming its pretty fun, you have a main pet and several short duration ones, and the main damage cooldown is a commander demon which gives a buff to other ones,

    In another game i played a Necromancer in which you had a main pet and several temporary pets.
    The temporary pets could be sacrificed to;
    add a dot to a target, debuff the target, heal over time player, or heal over time others.
    AoC could do something like target an area and summon a dozen wraiths that drain health on enemies in area for a few seconds
    Necro is definitely the one im keeping a close eye on

      Everquest 2 necro had a cool down which summoned like 12 pets for 15 seconds i love these kinds of cooldowns just out nowhere an army of zombies lol

    Being a druid main in wow, I really hope that they have summoned skin variety. Looking at the same bear, cat, boomkin for all those years got a bit old. I worry the same thing will happen with summoners.

      There’s apparently gonna be usage of the animal husbandry system with summoners! If this holds true we’ll get a lot of variety, not to mention how the secondary augments affect things. But I’m with you, seeing the same bland pet on everyone is boring

    I'm interested in the Shadowmancer myself. So many options can happen, so it's going to be very interesting to see how they do it. A lot of interesting ideas on this vid too.

    The summons need to be the main source of damage and abilities. 'Your summon starts to channel a powerful AOE ability'' type spells only.
    We need the summoner to have a clear class identity, Thanks to the archetypes we already get 8 different mages, we don't want another 8 mages with pets.
    The summons have to be the core gameplay of the summoner.

      I think that's where they're going with it. You'll be a base summoner, with similar starting abilities. Then based on your secondary class and equipped weapon choice, you'll have different pets and abilities, plus their different playstyles.

    There is a French tactical MMO called Dofus, and there is a summoner class called Osamodas. They have full summons, but also like the hands of a rock giant that slams, a dragon mouth to set fire and some others. Something like this would be nice too

    a few years ago i read about the summoners in aoc, that if there are 8 of them in a grp, they are able to cast one BIG "Pet" which is under the control of the grp-leader. I hope, that the developper are still working on that idea :)

    Guild wars one necromancer class was the best example of the summoner archetype in action. Exponential decay on summons health over time causing the to last for a few minutes. Your could have up to 16 skull boys at once, felt dynamic and if you died your pets would go wild and kill everything so your team had extra incentive to keep you alive while your army pumped out damage.

    If a summoner can "swap" it's summons mid combat like Genshin Impact. Where you have have a poison dps summon fighting but then you see the boss is about to do some big damage and you swap it out for a tank summon. Not only that but you have some small control over your summons too. Where you can command it to do its A B C or D skill whether it's defensive or offensive

    When I invision the Summoner Class, I can only see 3 types. The first type is a helper summons that is a straightforward combat pet that fifhts till dead. The second type is a type that needs maintainance, the type that needs energy from a taken fallen opponent. Think if a necromancer. The last summons could be a vapor type that can help you path to treasure of hidden objects or provide a non-combat benefit to the class. I would love to summon weapons or armor as well. A non-solid appearing weapon and armor would be nice as well. I see it more of a vapor look.

    I would love to see a summoner that actually transforms himself into a demon! They could play with the four elements like a fire demon! I hope one day they will add druids to the game so that the combination of druid+summoner will become a class, like a diabolic elementalist!

    Always loving the content bro. After re-watching I came over more to believe that having active abilities that command your pets, like skill shots that direct your pet to attack the same target with a buff. Or a defensive buff where your pet charges to you can you both get a buff, knocking back enemies between you and him for example. Will allow even a full pet based Summoner that much more engagement. And that much more of a skill ceiling and I'd prefer that.
    - Relative to that also I think for people that want minimal buttons on any class, passives are the answer. So for example if I have three pets, with three active buttons but I spend an absolute truck load of points into my weapon passives and class passives that give me self healing and enough utility that would create a low input build that works. Pretty much like the Pet Necromancer in Diablo 4, where you have to use some abilities to maximize your performance.

      Great take ! Yea imagine a skill tree with choice where you can invest soo much into buffing two active pets and those pets are super sturdy and powerful but at the cost of less skills, passives, etc for your actual character. This the type of stuff I want to see

    I feel like it would be cool that keeping your summons up maybe could drain mana? So you could manage which summon combos to have out due to abilities and mana consumption. You could even have a pet that saps mana from enemies to slow your mana consumption? May be a fresh take since most of the time summoners always use cooldowns or perma summons. Also your summons may give you different abilities or combos or utilities.

      I could see that effect for a powerful summon! Never thought of that . Maybe it’s super powerful but keeping it out has a manna cost per second 🤔

    My thought is this; why not just have the playstyle change based on combined "class?" For example, let Summoner+Cleric be a true pet zerg, just standing back and buffing their pets, while it's reverse - the Cleric+Summoner - has the more active pet skills? Or even staying with the same primary archetype, Summoner+Cleric should play differently than Summoner+Fighter, etc.
    If designed like this, the differences between combinations are not just stats and cosmetic, but the feeling of playing them can potentially be entirely different even between any two Summoners.
    They are genuinely sitting on gold if they apply this logic to all the archetype combos. Image being able to Tank+Rogue and play a stamina-heavy character that is actually somewhat squishy for a tank but makes up for it by being evasive and utilizing specialized dodges to be super slippery, but then if you go Tank+Tank you're just nothing but a walking health bar and armor resistances just begging for a team to keep you healed because that's ALL you are; "a health bar" lol. Would be dope if every combo gave massive playstyle changes.

    Honestly I’m new to the mmorpgs and was born a little late to enjoy WoW due to modern graphics ruining me but being able to summon creatures or objects has always captivated me.
    From a soon to be player who has no experience I won’t be good in pvp as I’ll be having a “great” time learning controls and getting that into muscle memory so from a new player with no experience having something fight for you sound appealing so you have something between you and your enemy. This is besides picking something like the ranger that may be one of the squishiest classes
    But with that here’s a new guy on the blocks opinion so don’t rip me a new one.
    1: although summoners while have a variety of summons they’re only allowed 3 at a time which can vary with tank, support, and dps. So having temp with short timers of activation may be a no go as a dps summon will be squishy compared to the tank summon but that may change with the archetypes with some getting a lot more summons or having just one powerful. But as for base class no timer on them
    2: I want to see something like I saw in the vod where this vid came from with the Ashes twist with what we saw in the ranger update last month where you combine with your summon in which you take the role of Tank, support, and dps which would swap some of your active skills with skills similar to the summon, this will help further the goal of the class being a Jack of all trades role and fit in a party comp when needed like to say there is a need for more tanks during a boss fight or they need more damage output so you take on a dps summon as your Symbiote. This can most likely be further enhanced with the brood warden archetype where your summons are more tanks so when you combine you are more tanky with the obvious augment.
    3: and lastly with a topic of the Necromancer, I know when everyone hears the name they think of zombies and raising an undead army that can cause debuffs but as stated on the wiki with a quote from Steven that necromancers are masters of life and death with the ability to be good or evil. He further explains that if you choose to be good your summons will have aid and healing abilities which I’d like to think is like dog companion from Remnant 2. These summons will take form of spirits most likely and the life and death domains are just augmentations.

      Yea I think the trick for DPS is to have summons always active and out doing damage then second priority will be temporary pets, pet buffs, debuffs, etc. great comment! And weirdly enough I’m with you. I feel like I’m two decades late to the WOW bandwagon and can’t get immersed watching it. I think the variety of summon ‘roles’ will indeed have a big impact on. Will affect build diversity and the true flexibility of summoner. Hoping to see varying pet skins like the mentioned skeleton for necromancer

    I think an important part to consider is how other classes will need to interact with summoner classes. I personally am debating Necromancer like a ton of other people, and I don't want to feel like what I bring to the table is so overwhelming that I feel like I'm cheating. I don't want undeserved victories. Summoner's probably going to be one of the hardest Archtypes to balance.

    *I still think that the Summoner job using the Monster Coin mechanics is the best for Massively powerful temp summons.*

    For me I most certainly will be going enchanter if / when AOC comes out. I'd also want to try out songcaller. Y'see my ultimate class fantasy is a support class that doesn't provide healing. The class would function similarly to shiroe from Log Horizon the anime, where you'd place debuffs on the enemy that interract with other players damage.
    Imagine this - You place a root onto an enemy, and then you buff your ally with double strike, and then any time they hit that rooted enemy within 5 seconds the root does a tick of damage. Thus making every hit from that other player hit 3 times instead of twice.
    I want a full blown class that functions like this. Buffing allies and debuffing enemies, and since the summoner is mixed into these 2 classes, the pet could function as the dps part of the class, while you, the summoner is the buff/debuffer.

    In the recent "Commissions" showcase, we got to see an NPC Summoner in action. But what is it that the NPC Summoner is summoning? The summons have an animal shape green spirit like skin. Notice when the Summoner gets put to sleep, his summon also gets put to sleep. As soon as the Summoner dies, the summon also dies. These summons do not look like pets, and they do not act like pets. What are they? (This design logic seems to carry over to the "Ranger" showcase, where the Rangers weapon skin is a shortbow, but it acts just like a Semi-auto/Full-auto Assault Rifle, with unlimited ammo. What is going on here?).

    City of Villains did the summoner class the best. Mastermind archtype was pure summoner, let minions do the work, buff them as needed and do some minor dps as needed.

      Crazy - after I left this comment, I went looking up videos from City of Heroes/Villains and found the game has been "rebirthed" somewhat. Installed, set up an account, jumped on and made a Mastermind summoner/pet class and obviously low level is slow but I watched a few vids of higher level players and it just gives that pure summoner class feel I miss so much. 6 active pets, 2 buff skills throughout your levels for the pets, some basic attack skills to compliment their attacks as well. The game is still back in 2004 but the concepts and coding for how pets should attack, respond, follow, etc are there @@Nyce-Gaming

      Yea I don’t think it’s tied to that. There’s a Necromancer class, but the archetype for summoner is a separate thing so we’ll get a nice variety

    Yeah i want to see a summoner where you feel like an overlord. I want a mix of a group of minions that are always there and then have summons that are temporary but i think the time on them should be the length of a fight for as long as in combat and then have spells that augment summons. I would also not like a limit on summons but instead longish cast times giving this window of lockdown to enemies. It should play like Demonology Warlock in WoW but i would like even better/more. have imps and larger demons with longer casts to summon them so you pop off with little summons and then when u have windows u cast long cast for bigger summons.

      I dont like cooldowns, cooldowns are not fun, i think "windup" mechanics are a better way to balance combat and keep it engaging and skill based with timing in a more interactive way.

      A lot of people bring up this spec from WOW. I gotta watch more of it. And yea cooldowns aren’t always the most fun, but lately I’ve found that they make balancing a lot easier without just nerfing things that are strong

      Yeah totally, im with you i just dont want them to turn combat into wow conbat where its just a cooldown game of waiting for CD pops, If they could focus on cast times and more attack/block/negating damage instead i think it would make it flow smoother and give it that impactful feel. @@Nyce-Gaming

      If they keep all CDs in the game no longer than 30 sec i think thats a more engaging way to do it. I'd rather all class's be OP and have the ability to kill than be underpowered and have 30min duels exc..because thats what killed wow PVP was they were too busy keeping class's underpowered when they shoul;d just make everything OP for their role.

    The best pet classes ever in any MMO was Dark Age of Camelot's Theurgist and Vanguard's Necromancer.
    If you want pet hordes, maybe Age of Conan's Necro.

    Summoner needs a strong class identity. If you read the comments, you'd think a summoner should be good at everything. One class does it all, one class to dominate, one class with solutions to all problems, one class that doesn't need friends(it has pets), one class that heals, tanks and dpses everything. I'm curious if they can pull it off to create a real identity/niche for it. I'm sure it will be the most disappointing class, because no matter what route they take, the dreams of a lot of ppl will be shattered.

      Yea. I got a feeling they have a lot going on that they don’t show us because it’s not ‘show ready’. I’d imagine they’d have it done by alpha 2 and maybe able to show before then. I don’t imagine secondary augments not being in a2. Plus apparently we’ve seen some already 🤔

    im curious what theyll do with the keeper tank/summoner. everquest frontiers pet system was the best, ESO had an unforgivably terrible pet system. they feel worthless in eso.

      Soooo worthless in eso. Some taunting/tanky pets that are tough to focus out will be cool or maybe they can occasionally create aoe shields near them or absorb damage that comes to you 🤔

    I'm fine with Necro getting pets, but don't do that to the melee classes, give me something fresh and new to manage. Pets are tropey and dull, give me something fresh.

    letting your pets handle everything sucks. That makes it an auto game.

    I'm super excited about the summoner, i really dont want to see perma pets though....i like the idea of temp pets, cast a raven, it pecks the target for 30 seconds, and has a 1 min cooldown kinda thing.....you can keep summoning diff pets with diff cooldowns.

      Yea the bard especially the concept of maybe one with a decent offensive kit sounds so cool. Always takes me to monster hunters war horn

      Thats so odd to me that somebody doesn't want at least one permanent pet for at least one class. Every single mmo I ever played had one. Especially hunter type classes.
