  • Do you know in what context the Sermon on the Mount was delivered? And how is the sermon structured? It is about this subject and more details about the Sermon on the Mount that we will talk about in this video. Welcome everyone to the cartoon Bible school channel. If you are not yet subscribed, please subscribe like and share our channel Introduction: When studying the Sermon on the Mount we need to know in what context Jesus delivered this sermon. In this way, we know that the Israelites expected the fulfillment of the greatest Prophecy, which was the arrival of the King. We know that between Malachi and Matthew there is a period of approximately 400 years when God did not speak to the people through prophets. Thus, The Gospel of Matthew will make the link between the Old Testament and the New Testament. Thus, we observe that Matthew contains more Old Testament quotations than the other Gospels. In total there are 53 quotes and 76 allusions to the Old Testament. Still speaking of the context, in the period in which Jesus gave this sermon, there were at the time four dominant religious groups: The Pharisee, the Sadducees, the Essenes and the Zealots, the Pharisees, it was the legalist traditionalists who valued the ceremonial rite, the Sadducees were the modernists the liberal wing different from the Pharisees ignored the traditions, the Essenes, they were the separatists lived isolated the search for purification it is from this group that in the future will arise The monasteries, the Zealots were the nationalist activists who believed that the new King would conquer the power through the Sword. Jesus did not fit and none of these 4 groups And during the sermon on the Mount Jesus will show that his kingdom was not connected with the ideas of these groups.
It is in this context of waiting for the Great Promised King and of religious fragmentation that Matthew presents Jesus The Promised King, it is not by chance that this sermon, considered the soul of the Gospel, is presented in the first chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. in other words, the Sermon on the Mount is the summary of the standard that the subjects of the kingdom must follow, that is, it is the ethical and moral model that every Christian must follow. We emphasize that we must not fulfill the Sermon on the Mount to be saved but because we are already saved we must follow the pattern established by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount. Point 1. Structure of the sermon Matthew chapter 5 Verse 1 says that Jesus, seeing the multitude, went up to the mountain, sat down and began to teach. Unlike today, when people usually stand when speaking at the time of Jesus, the rabbis had the custom, when delivering their most important speeches, to sit down. Matthew emphasizes that Jesus sat down. And so Jesus goes on to teach in Matthew Chapters 5, 6, and 7. As we read this sermon, we have to keep in mind that whoever is uttering these words is Emmanuel himself, the God with us. In this way, we will see in the course of the study that the moral standard of the Sermon on is based on the divine standard of the Messianic kingdom The Sermon on the Mount is divided into five parts: The Beatitudes, salt and light, Jesus is the fulfillment of the law, the deeds of justice, and declarations of wisdom. At first this sermon was directed to the disciples and the crowd according to Chapter 5 Verse 1 of Matthew. today this teaching is for all Christians Point 2 The Beatitudes Blessed means happy, worthy of being congratulated. Jesus begins his sermon by talking about happiness, but in a way never seen before. The search for happiness is a human goal that nowadays is often in possessing goods and having status, but Jesus presents the way to happiness in a different way from the world. We know in advance that having goods and status is not a sin but we need to understand that only in Jesus there is full happiness “Psalm 16 vs 11 in your presence there is abundance of joy” Augustine in his book Confessions speaking of human restlessness, warns that “The heart of man is restless until it finds rest in God. So true joy is in God. may we be careful not to deceive ourselves and try to find happiness outside the ways of God. The beatitudes are: Blessed are those: poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who hunger and thirst for justice, the merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, those who suffer persecution for justice's sake, Blessed are it is you when they say all evil against you for my sake. For every such beatitude there is a consequence. Theirs is the kingdom of heaven, they will be comforted, they will inherit the earth, they will be filled, they will obtain mercy, they will see God, they will be called children of God, theirs is the kingdom of heaven, and their reward will be great. In summary, we saw that there is no secret to happiness, because the way is to obey and practice the teachings given by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.
