    The good thing about the loss of 4Kids is that its voice actors can finally choose which cartoon they want to be on instead of being chained to 4Kids by contract obligations!

    • @NebLleb

      In fact, I saw that some of their former actors worked on an altered version of Bloody Roar 2 as an experiment to see how an old game would sound with new voice actors.

      Funny you should mention that. A few days ago, Dan Green tweeted that he and Eric Stuart voiced their characters straight from the manga as a respect for the passing of Kazuki Takahashi. Currently they're trying to recruit the other Yugioh cast members. Not sure how much of the manga is going to be voiced over, but I'm excited😄

      @@Cloud-dt6xb Emerl (or Emel in the dub) still technically “died,” but the animation was altered. When Cream and Cheese give Emerl the final boot, Emerl cries a black substance that looks more like engine oil in the Japanese original. This was changed to a pale blue in the 4Kids dub for whatever reason. My guess is that the TV network and/or the FCC felt the black substance was too much of a resemblance to blood, so they made 4Kids change it even though Emerl is a FRIGGIN ROBOT.

    Funfact: 4kids did produce uncut dvd dubs for yugioh and shamin king with funimation.
    Unfortunately, 4kids got greedy and they didn't want the uncut yugioh dubs to interfere with their dvd sales and only released volume 1 and volume 2.
    Volume 3 and shamin king uncut were never released. Their dubbing company was bought out by konami and still dub the yugioh anime today as 4Kmedia since they lost the lawsuit with konami.

      @@dwainsimmons3447 Technically you are right, but I believe 4Kids won the lawsuit for two reasons:
      One: The license holders in Japan, including TV Tokyo, apparently gave 4Kids the rights within the contracts to continue dubbing the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise unless they chose to terminate it. While this is not easy to back up with hard evidence, the Japanese license holders would try to sneak the raw footage for Zexel and another Yu-Gi-Oh! series to a second dub studio while the lawsuit was ongoing, and this was “allegedly” behind 4Kids’ back, so while it’s not a hard confirmation, it points to this being one of the reasons.
      Two: Some regions, like the United States, have laws in place to allow sub-licensing to and from other regions and studios to make the process much easier and cheaper for everyone involved. While I believe that this only counts for media and other things made in the USA, because 4Kids would change things like the music and certain visual elements (like changing Japanese foods & text), this technically allowed them to “re-brand” their dubs as completely original content, so they would technically be in the right to do this.
      But again, no one can say for sure except the corporations that duked it out in the legal system.

    I think you forgot to mention that the first show 4Kids did when they started was "WMAC Masters" which was a show about a Martial Arts competition competing for the ultimate prize and that was their 1st show they did before they started Dubbing Pokemon, The Cramp Twins was also on the FoxBox block as well and when Ultimate Muscle became so popular in North America then it did in Japan 4Kids had actually commissioned Toei Animation to do another Season. I just wanted to point those out for you.

  • @LeafRazorStorm
    @LeafRazorStorm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    The only thing I could never stand about 4Kids was how often they change the music. I understand the financial/"licensing" reasons for it, but it always felt like overstepping their bounds solely for the bottom line. Change the dialogue and censor critical plot details for a Y7 rating, fine, but there is NO artistic reason to change the score aside from minute "focus group" bullcrap.

    • @LeafRazorStorm
      @LeafRazorStorm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @KabukiLayerCake I think 4Kids had good intentions back in 1998. In any episode's Japanese track, half of it would have no music at all and the other half would recycle some music too often. I understand why 4Kids would feel the need to "spice things up" under those circumstances. Trouble only came when got too ambitious and, even when the Japanese music improved, 4Kids doubled down, eventually reusing their own tracks so often that later seasons of the dub began to sound even MORE stale and repetitive than early seasons of the not-dub, completely defeating the purpose.

    • @OtakuUnitedStudio
      @OtakuUnitedStudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The cost of licensing the original music might simply have been outside of the budget at the time. Later on they absolutely could have paid out for it, though.

    • @aortaplatinum
      @aortaplatinum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't see any benefit to redoing the music, if anything it was a waste of money. They already had the license to a series and everything that came with it, except for probably the opening and ending tracks since those were usually licensed themselves, so why throw away so much money to replace Sonic X's fantastic score with some generic, empty sounding orchestral?

    Someone who accknoledged Doremi! Shame they didn't give it the respect it deserves! Poor time slots, low toy sales despite the toys being really high quality (I had two dolls as a kid but didn't know they were from a show until middle school), putting the second half of season one (which they called season 2) online only, getting cancelled leaving the show on a downer ending, and no official US DVDs except for episode 3 that came with the mini dolls. At least their dub of Winx Club (my favorite magical girl show, Doremi is my second) had DVDs. Hope we can see Doremi get the Sailor Moon VIZ treatment.

    It should be known that, at least in anime form, Ultimate Muscle was a flop in Japan. Hilariously ironic because Toei animation dumbed down the source material for a younger audience. If anything 4Kids liked doing the show so much, and it being a mild ratings success, they saved the show with a Westerner exclusive second season. You see, the Japanese series was leading up to the Choujin Olympics arc, but instead ended on a filler arc. Which, kinda is what happened with the original 1983 Kinnikuman series this was a sequel to. 4Kids funded the Olympics arc to give actual closure to the series, though they changed the ending from the manga. Understandably because they weren't going to do the arc after it, and wanted to give Kid Muscle a happy ending, as he loses in the original storyline. That said, they gave the 2003 TMNT series a place to thrive because they were also the licensing company. Mirage still owned the Turtles, but always used a licensing agent. I firmly believe if TMNT was on any other channel, it would have went the way of He-Man 2003. They gave it a chance, it got 7 seasons, and only ended because Peter Laird sold the rights to Viacom before they could start the series over. Of course, considering Playmates pushed them to throw away an entire completed season because of their crappy handling of the toy line, and two banned episodes featuring gruesome concepts (one remained unfinished) forced them to start making the show more kid friendly, that was a blessing.

      Sonic X was just not popular in Japan, but was a ratings hit the rest of the world over. And the funny thing is, Ultimate Muscle was made for Western audience and when they brought it back for air in Japan, it was really unsuccessful. 4Kids had this dumb thing about rotoscoping the Japanese language off of characters' heads (yet not the mark of "Ultimate Muscle"), and apparently the Japanese audience was offended by the fact they just left it off the character. Strange thing about Sonic X, though. The show was animated with all these Japanese references in tact, even written and originally voiced in Japanese, despite the fact it never actually aired or was planned to air. It was painfully obvious in the episode where the Chaotix team was throwing a party for everyone aboard the ship. There's an obvious reference to Kabuki that turned into nonsense. Anyway, the Japanese language version was available all the way back when Hulu was free, but I haven't seen it legally anywhere else since.

    Also, the less said about their One Piece dub and the censorship of DBZ Kai, the better.

    The Vortex... ahhh, the memoires of putting that on as background noise on Saturday mornings... I mist that. Funny enough, I happen to have the last Saturday that it aired still on my cable box recorded in 2014. Just a couple of Cubix episodes, but I remember it like it was yesterday because I woke up with an extreme burning and sharp pain in my ass. Literally...
    But I do want to say one thing and give my two cents on. When you mentioned The Vortex and why it was doomed to fail, I feel like you're missing the point. There are many factors as to why it failed.
    1. It's called The Vortex and played on the CW. Not many kids, let alone teens or adults, would know that because the last thing kids think of when wanting to watch say cartoons is the CW. Hell I didn't even know about it until I was flipping through the channels one early Saturday morning to put something on as background noise. There isn't exactly a lot of notoriety for it. It's like Jetix or The Hub, only a certain group knows about it.
    2. The shows. What kid say in the year 2014 is going to wake up early on Saturday morning and say, "Oh boy, I can't wait to watch Sonic X!" All of the shows were old and nobody cared about them. It was playing Cubix for god's sake. What kid is going to wake up early Saturday morning to watch a show from 2001 with outdated CGI that most don't even remember? And say if the kid really wanted to see it, they could probably find the entire show else where on the internet for free and not have to wait until Saturdays to watch it.
    3. The kids back then probably didn't care in general. Blockbuster by 2013 was dead. The future of entertainment was streaming and the internet. Kids then and certainly now would rather see whoever is popular like PewDiePie or something rather than to wake up and watch old shows that were made before they were probably born on Saturday mornings. And on top of the that the decline of the cable boxes as well by that point.
    4. Saturday morning cartoons are technically still a thing. Sometimes new episodes for shows do still air on Saturday morning, just not all of them. It just depends. Some air at night, some throughout the day, and shows like MLP would air new episodes on Saturday mornings. So I don't think Saturday morning cartoons are out of the question. Just not a special block on channels like Fox or the CW.

    Then Saban after they bought most of 4Kids' properties would not learn from their mistakes, and made crappy dubs of Precure (Or "Glitter Force", because they wanted it to be a lot like Power Rangers.), Digimon, and some of the worst Power Rangers seasons out there, Megaforce and Ninja Steel, that made people think that they treated Turbo and Operation Overdrive too harshly, and tried to do a theatrical film that attempted to turn Power Rangers into a cross between Bayformers and the MCU, which failed because Power Rangers has its own partially Asian-inspired identity, and trying to fully Americanize it would make it feel nutered. And then Hasbro bought Saban Brands and its properties, and had a chance to redeem the franchises they bought by "expanding the brands", but, they messed them up again. They rushed Digimon and Precure out the door, did nothing with the 4Kids properties that Saban bought from them, and made the same mistake in Power Rangers Cosmic Fury because they wanted the show to be 10 episodes, even though, its Japanese counterpart Kyuranger isn't a show you can write into that many episodes, just so they could again, rush Power Rangers out the door with a reboot that is currently going nowhere, and if it is greenlit, it'll probably end up recieving the same fate that the last attempt to reboot the franchise for cinemas did.

That is why Media Mementos has no video marked 1K Subscriber Special. Also, he did not gain so many dislikes in this video from stating his opinion that 4Kids is over-hated.

    I have to admit 4kids used to be a decent dub company and wasn’t overly hated during the late 90s and early 2000s. After the Kirby dub and TMNT 2003 which were the last good things 4kids did. 4kids seemed to be taken to a greedy route when Sonic X and one piece came around, because like u said 4kids got way trigger happy with the censorship, when 4kids TV came around and more anime was introduced and that’s where the bad reputation for the 4kids brand started. I mean 4kids butchered The third season of Sonic X especially the death scene of Cosmo, they ruined Mew mew power, magical doremi the list goes on. It’s quite sad what 4kids became towards the end of their lifecycle.

    If I were to go back and dub the show's that 4kids had neutered. I would put effort into perfecting the dialogue and elements of the anime while keeping the integrity and staying faithful to what made them so popular in their country of origin. I would use after effects to play around with the dialogue animations to better fit with the English audio. Brainstorm on what deliveries and dialogue choices would be perfect equivalents of how they played out in Japan, keeping the original names and elements, and rearranging the shot orders to complement those deliveries; all in all something similar to Team Forster but building upon those elements.

    I honestly thought 'The Fox Box' was just as cringey in it's original form as it was when it became '4Kids TV', and 'Toonzai'. The only show that I liked was 'Turtles'. I did give 'Sonic X' a watch, but it didn't last long. I'll never understand why THAT show continues to thrive while 2003 'Tutrles' can barely get any air exposure. Also, I hate Fox, The WB, and The CW just as much as I hate 4Kids for throwing cartoon blocks under the bus.

    *My ranking of the four 4Kids programming blocks:*
    4. *Toonzai:* (Horrendous!) This block was just an embarassment. Not only did it not have any new original shows originally from 4Kids, and only two acquired shows, its promo structure was all around bad, especially the one for DBZ Kai, where it claimed that Piccolo was a saiyan (I wish I was making this up.). It was also released during the time of the lawsuits, which didn't help, and it ended production on the Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds English Dub, leaving Season 5 and half of Season 4 undubbed, forcing them to rush their English Dub of Yu-Gi-Oh ZeXal. It's just bad all around.
    3. *4Kids TV:* (Mediocre.) Yeah, you thought I was going to put CW4Kids at this spot, but, no, I actually think 4Kids TV is worse than CW4Kids. Not just because I had more nostalgia for CW4Kids, but also, 4Kids TV had its crappy One Piece Dub as one of its main shows, which isn't a good look for a block, and it made each character sing the Star Spangled Banner pretty badly as a Fourth of July stunt. Also, it's just kind of bland, as most of the promos felt kind of bland and corporate driven. And the name would be better if it was a channel or a streaming service than as an actual block.
    2. *The CW4Kids:* (Decent.) This is a shocker, but, I think that The CW4Kids is actually better than 4Kids TV, and that's because it had more of an actual identity that made it feel at home, and, me having a bit of nostalgia for it also sort of helped with it, and the programming it got from third parties was actually really good, such as Spectacular Spider-Man, and my personal favorite, Kamen Rider Dragon Knight. Not saying it was a spectacular block, its only new show was Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds, as most of the programming was re-runs of their old shows, or the shows just moving to a new network. Not to say I hate all of them, Chaotic was actually pretty good, but, this is where the no new in-house shows or dubs thing really became a thing for 4Kids and their programming blocks. It's better than 4Kids TV, because it at least tried to stand out (Especially with its name.), and it didn't have the One Piece of Crap Dub, and the characters singing the Star Spangled Banner terribly all the time.
    1. *The Fox Box:* (Awesome!) This needs no introduction, other than, THE FOX BOX ROCKS! This is how you do a Saturday Morning Cartoon Block correctly. A catchy theme, somewhat stellar programming, minus the pirate dub that must not be name, a cool logo, and NOT forcing your company's name into the name of your block. It also did something the other blocks didn't do (Unless you count 4KidsTV's stupid Fourth of July stunt.), and that is, have a fun crossover with all the block's most popular shows, called The Fight for the Fox Box. It also does a good job of standing out, which helped it remain competitive with KidsWB, their main competitor. If only the other blocks had as much creativity as this one did.

    The thing I hate about Sonic X is they ruined one of the best jokes by making it make no sense. In the first episode, he's on a racecar and the driver tells him not to do that, kids might copy him, to which he responds by telling the audience not to ride on top of moving cars. In the dub, the driver's dialog is the same but Sonic says "Don't use Formula-1 race cars to chase hedgehogs".
