The utter incompetence of the two on charge. Buying channels from Sky at the same rate they were charging the public. And then they made out they were misled that the transmitters couldn't boost out the digital signal strong enough. It was disgraceful. Then the bloody thing started to work when it all became free to air!
They kicked Sky out of the project. Had they not done so, they would've carried Sky's channels at an affordable price. They apparently couldn't make the digital broadcasts too strong or it would've affected analogue viewers. It was evident from the outset they couldn't broadcast the digital services at high power.
@@anthonyperkins7556 correction: they were forced to kick sky out of the project. sky's involvement broke competition laws that were in place at the time. so they were forced to compete with sky instead of working with them
MPH was built for BSB at huge expense in the early 90s (they wanted to come across as high end like the BBC vs Sky who used a shabby old office). It's demolished now. There was a BBC Four documentary called 'The Curse of Marco Polo House' in the 2000s which I'd love to see.
@@SprinterPlayz Freeview is ITV Digital. The free to air channels continued broadcasting and the licenses were continued by Freeview. Some ITV Digital kit continues to work on some Freeview channels to this day
The deal with the football league collapsing was just the straw that broke the camels back. They overpaid for the rights and due to not enough customers subscribing to the service they were never going to make the money back. Their signals were not strong enough for customers either, every year a quarter of their customers left for sky or cable.
@@debbiemckeown7626 Not forgetting about how easy the boxes were to pirate, effectively making the premium channels (such as MTV, Nickelodeon etc) free to view.
It’s good for what it is. Much better value for money for the TV license than just 4, maybe 5, channels on analogue! Aaaahhhhh, analogue TV. Now *that* WAS rubbish!!!
@@MrThecarebear Really? It wasn’t rubbish? Say that to those who lived in hilly areas but where the broadcasters couldn’t be bothered to erect a relay. Or to anyone who was watching Sky when it rained before Sky Digital.

And yet this was before Freeview perfected it

Hmmm, the ITV digital headquarters was (previously named) Marcopolo house. Interesting
And it was the HQ of failed satellite broadcaster British Satellite Broadcasting, too.
The building is cursed!
