Our F80 M3 is TOO POWERFUL! Upgrading the DCT Clutch Pack

- We're no strangers to upgrading the DCT clutches on F10 M5's; they can start to slip them at Stage 2 power - But we've never tuned an F8x M3/M4 to the point where it slips the BMW clutches. That was until we added methanol injection and race fuel to our Stage 3 F80 M3!
With the clutch slipped and the oil overheated the only thing to do is change the clutches. Clearly we need something a bit stronger than the standard fitment.
Enter Deka Clutch Technologies and their Stage 3 clutch setup. Perhaps a little overkill for what we needed, but having tested their Stage 2 we wanted to see what their most hardcore offering was like.

This was pretty interesting to see I’d never really looked at how DCT clutches were assembled before
We thought it would be interesting to show the process.
Awesome DCT video. Never seen one disassembled. My E9X M3 DCT failed at 170k miles...cost $14k to replace. BMW Dealerships in the US don't open the unit for repairs. Besides replacing the wet clutch, there is an internal pump. Also look for a wiring harness on the top pf the DCT....the o-ring that seals it shrinks and could start a leak. The new o-ring is thicker. BMW forces you to buy a whole new DCT if there is a serious problem. BMW says the DCT fluid is a lifetime fluid. Of course, that is crazy. Service the DCT fluid, filter, plastic pan/seal every 50k-75k miles. While dropping the DCT, replace the wear items on the driveshaft...if it is noisy (clunk).
For a ZF Automatic Transmission, the plastic A/T oil pan contains an integrated oil filter. When you change the A/T fluid, you have to replace the A/T oil pan too. $$$ I bet it is the same for a DCT. Thank you, BMW!!
A gearbox service and readaptation is well worth doing as part of maintenance for sure!
This detailed video is pure professionalism. I was expecting with the moods the final VMAX event to see the differences in launching. However it will be interesting to see the Dyno results.

That's interesting, looks like a clutch pack out of a motorcycle, done a few of those in my time. I could replace a clutch pack in about 30 mins near the end of my riding life...

I removed the suction pump( jet pump lower peace like you did and found it broken has crack ! I have to move my car from the spot itis in now. do you think if drive 3 mile after filling the transmission full using ista would be horrible idea? Problem is I have to move my car😢😢

Would the new owner of got the new clutch replaced as part of the sale if you had of sold it when you put it up several months ago I wonder 🤔. Maybe potential punters dodged a bullet back then. Hi, a ZF6 speed does not have a clutch. It is a torque converter based transmission.

Love the content guys, can I ask why you chose to go with Deka rather than Dodson or SSP clutches?
Variety of reasons, we’ve used SSP clutches before with good success also
@@EvolveAutomotive Could you list a few reasons? Do they clank like the Dodsons going into reverse and 1st gear? Only asking as I'm looking to build a big powered F80 comp with Kratos turbos, would love your recommendation on which clutch to go with :) (Not sure if the stage 2 would clank as you've installed the stage 3)
The Deka are the closest to OEM action that we have found whilst still being able to hold the torque numbers and it what we would go with in your case.
If worried about NVH from the gearbox go for a Stage 2 clutch and let your tuner know what your torque limit is. If wanting all out power and you’re worried your setup might be able to produce more than a Stage 2 clutch can take go for Stage 3.
A Stage 2 would have been fine for our usage but we wanted to test the Stage 3.

Race fuel and adding methanol took us beyond the torque limit of the stock clutches.
When you say its coming to the end of life with this car what do you do with it then? I'm guessing you mean no more video content on it. Should do a giveaway to a subscriber ;) haha
We sell the car, and use the money and space for something new!

I’m on stage 2 atm m5 f10, so if I upgraded to stage 2 clutch what Bhp can I push to?
Seems pointless to rate a clutch to 1400NM when the stock baskets does not hold up that much torque. 1000Nm @ wheel was enough to brake the stock basket...
Deka make uprated baskets also for those that need it.
