JP player labbing Asuka totally makes sense.
Same voice actor for both characters in Japanese too
LMAO it wouldve been great if someone told him the frame data
+50 on some of these spells
some of them are over +100, i think like +130
Consider it done
4:40 Yup. You have an static image pasted on top, but it's 100% transparent. Then you use a mask on the cape's frames and it shows. It's not that resource intensive or hard to program tbh. The interactions with the black hole were probably MUCH worse. lol
It's not a mask, exactly. The code to render most models uses what's called UV mapping, where the model is essentially "unfolded" onto a texture. Asuka's cape unfolds its UVs based on its position on the screen, so it always looks like the model's texture is flat and facing the camera. It's a pretty beginner-level trick, but it looks GREAT in action.
They also probably did some other stuff to the galaxy texture - it looks like they built it out of a few textures that jiggle independently of each other, so the stars look like they have some depth and motion to them. It's hard to tell just from the video, but they might also move the texture's base position when the camera moves so it looks like it's mapped to the world and not the screen.
Hey, local Asuka nerd here. It's frame data time.
First important note are his special cancel properties. He can cancel draw/discard into cast and vise versa, and both can cancel into regen/deck swap, but regen/deck swap can't cancel into anything else. As far as frame data on cancels go, drawing and deck swapping are interchangeable as are discarding and regening. So, every draw on block after a spell is a more complex rps situation than just the frame data I'm presenting here. Also if you have meter, canceling into the draw super makes everything EVEN MORE PLUS.
- Water Cube: +5, +2 on draw which frametraps into c.S, 2K, and 5K
- Wind Cubes: +10, +12 on draw which frametraps into 5HS and (delay if you draw) f.S
- Lightning Cube: Yypically unsafe to go into up close off most normals. +22, +24 on draw. Plus enough to get 2 recovery actions in and frametrap like wind cubes. With just draw, you can frametrap into 6HS, an overhead.
- Big Cube: Same startup as lighting cube, +57. +44 on draw.
- Turret Cubes: +113, +110 on draw. Deceiving number given the physical trajectory of the cubes will effect how plus you are and if there is a gap between waves, but you can get them all to connect on block if you want to.
- Explosion: +16, +7 on draw. Used for TK shenanigans and guard crush strike/throw, among other more obvious uses.
- ACME Anvil and Earthquake: different startup, 19 and 16 respectively, same advantage. +4, +2 on draw.
- Flamethrower: base level 1 is +8, +2 on draw, add +10 for every level.
- Lightning Cards: +25, +24 on draw. Also has guard crush property. More importantly, it does 55 base damage. For every 11 spells used, it levels up and does 11 more damage per level, up to 99.
- Speed Staff: If it looks like a cube, it now has +11 more frames and guard crush. Lmao.
- Super Cubes: Both +36, which is exactly how plus you are after a super wallbreak. I just think that one is funny.
- Anything that lasts an amount of time (reduced cost, auto draw, staffs) last for 600 frames. For some ungodly reason, the mana regen spell is an exception that lasts 900. This will get nerfed, mark my words.
So yeah, this character is stupid complex. I didnt touch on startup too much because 2D makes all of that stuff crazy. 2D counts as a projectile, which means it has no hitstop, which means you can special cancel off of it faster than any other normal, which turns going into Big Cube a frame trap instead of a mashable gap. It's fucked. Have fun!
For a character like Asuka it's probably best to focus on a simple starting gameplan. I don't have any experience with Asuka specifically, but I played a lot of Answer and Venom, two other very complex characters, and I found it much less overwhelming to not focus too much on the crazy parts of the kit until after I had several matches just focusing on mastering the rest of the characters' kits. Trying to learn the full properties of each card right away is a recipe for getting fed up with the character and going back to playing Sol.
@@kevingriffith6011You're 100% correct, but I mostly posted this because it's hilarious. Knowing you can magically become +57 off a sweep is peak comedy to me. Also, on the off chance that Brian reads my comment, I'm sure these numbers will cause great psychological damage.
By no means am I trying to say that you need to know all this to play Asuka, but you do need to know some of the basics, which I was sure to put in. Basic frametraps off the basic cubes, mentioning the weirdness that 2D allows you to get up to, informing people about TK Screamer, the speed staff being kinda vital to understand, and a few other factoids like the super cube being plus enough for you to run your post-wall break mix.
To be completely fair, the type of person who seriously wants to main asuka is probably also the type of person who sees "frame data time" and goes nuts. But even if that isn't the case, whoever it was in chat was 10000% correct when they said that you don't have to understand this character to play him. To beat him, on the other hand? Well, it depends on the matchup, but this is still pretty valuable information to have.
But yes, the primary reason I posted this was the absurdity of posting this in the first place.
Silly question, whats with the number beside mana bar for? The color is for which test case is active but the number??
@@rexalavosierThe color of the number AND the moon phase can tell you what deck asuka is on, yellow/new for 1, green/crecent for 2, and blue/full for 3. The number tells you how many cards are left in the deck since the decks have a set number of each spell, just shuffled each time. If you count cards well, you can keep track of these kinds of things. I just keep track of key spells like staffs, recovery spells, and a few other spells like teleport (it can gum up the works sometimes, it's worth managing) or explosion (same deal).
@@AshGray2520 whoa cool, i play him and still thinking bookmark spell is purely rng lol.
Brian guessed exactly how the cape is done. I'm a programmer that kinda stuff is easy to do with shaders. You make a second stage or png or whatever and use a stencil to only render it in a certain area.
"The goofy character"
That narrows it down from 27 to...27 lol
Least goofy character would be Ky, and yea he’s the only one.
Yeah, mana regen and auto import is basically "fuck it, we ball"
dude he is such a fun character def worth the time
don't gaslight him
I've not touched the game since before Asuka released and now I'm feeling like booting up again. He's completely nuts. 🤣
Asuka is just the Japanese equivalent of Oscar lol
asOOka
🤓
Oscar.
for asuka's cloak, doing the effect is trivial if you have a lot of control over your engine.
essentially every pixel on your screen has a ray thats cast out from it. if this ray hits asuka's face it makes that pixel skin color, if it hits his cloak it stops considering scene one and starts considering scene 2. (simplification but enough i hope to get the concept across) the effect was used quite a bit in prey.
Andddd he was nerfed…I still wanna play him but really dislike projectile speed nerf. Hurtbox extensions I totally get, mana regen too to 10sec, but auto bookmark only 5 changes a lot -_- I hope gobou sticks with him & melts people
I did NOT know brian fked with Strive
Super hyped for this, Asuka is cool as hell
oscar
4:47 just an texture moving at the same speed as the char
I dont get it. If the texture is moving with character, why don't the stars move?
@@dragonic22 the texture is attached to the character, imagine there is a square in the back with a still image, now walk forward and move the image at the same speed (the image is cropped and you only move like a parallax background)
@@LorenzoEski ...explain it to me like I'm 10 years old
@@dragonic22 imagine yourself holding a painting, you walk, the paint move
@@LorenzoEski The actual painting of the stars moves with the character. This I get.
What I don't get is, if the painting is moving, why does it look like it's not?
I love asooka
as a nerd that has dedicated a lot of time to learning all this bullshit, if you have any doubts, I do actually know what's happening
a sook a
Not that Im complaining, I would like to see Brain F play more Strive, but why is he playing Strive? Just to take a quick breather from SF6 or something?
This is so cool :D
