    Jean-Fery Rebel [le père]
    (Paris, bap. 18 April 1666 - Paris, 2 January 1747)
French violinist, harpsichordist, conductor and composer. Son of Jean Rebel (c.1636-1692), he showed talent for music and began playing the violin at an early age, winning the approbation of the King and Jean-Baptiste Lully when he was only 8. He then became his pupil in violin and composition. From 18 August 1705 he was one of the 24 Violons du Roi and then became batteur de mesure in that ensemble and in the Opéra orchestra. On 30 March 1718 he obtained from Michel-Richard de Lalande rights of reversion to the post of chamber composer to the king, and he duly succeeded his brother-in-law in this post on Lalande's death. He also was active at the Academic Royale de Musique in various capacities, being made its 'maitre de musique' (1716) and also conducted at the Concert Spirituel (1734-35). As he grew older he gradually gave up his various posts in favour of his son, the composer and violinist François Rebel [le fils] (1701-1775). He was held in high regard by his contemporaries. His last work, 'Les Elémens, simphonie nouvelle' (c.1737), preceded by a movement called Cahos (‘Chaos’), served as an introduction to the suite of dances making up Les elemens. Its harmonic daring, its orchestral colouring and the originality of its conception make 'Cahos' a masterpiece of 18th Century French instrumental music. His sister Anne-Renée Rebel (1663-1722) was a singer and she married Michel-Richard de Lalande.

This is the best musical interpretation of the Big Bang that I ever heard. Le Roi Soleil would have flipped his powdered wig and called for his surgeon to bleed him upon hearing this. This is the Second Viennese School more than a century ahead of its time and a masterpiece by one of the underrated masters of the Baroque era. Credit due to the always superb period Freiburger Barockorchester.

In his dissonant chord "Chaos", Rabel shifts the focus from the importance of the individual sounds, highlighting instead features related to timbre, texture, and dynamics - of foremost importance is the sound mass, rather than the individual pitches (20th century music).

” His final major work, Les Elémens (The Elements), involves all the notes on the harmonic D minor scale. An impressive intellectual and musical achievement, the piece portrays the four elements of air, earth, fire, and water, which evolve to a single tone, thus representing the creation of nature. Bellissimo! A number of his compositions are characterized by complex rhythms and special harmonies that were not fully understood and appreciated by his contemporaries. His: "Les Caractères de la danse" (symphonie de danse) JFR.56 combine music with dance and introduce unusual metrical ideas. This piece was also a success in London, where Händel performed it in 1725. He composed: "Tombeau de Monsieur de Lully" (sonate en trio) JFR.36 in honor of his teacher Lully. Some of Rebel's compositions are performed as dance symphonies - Une symphonie de danse. Among these compositions, Les élémens, describing the creation of the world, stands out.

The first movement Chaos makes it hard to believe Lully was his teacher, but the rest of the piece, yes.

@@marikomariko3992 Yes, very successful dissonant tone cluster! Rabel explains his approach: “The elements painted in dance and music seemed to me capable of a pleasant variety, both in relation to the different genres of music and in relation to the dancers. The introduction to this symphony was natural. It was chaos itself, this confusion which reigned between the Elements before the moment when, subject to invariable laws, they took the place prescribed for them in the order of nature. To designate, in this confusion, each element in particular I have subjected myself to the most accepted conventions. The bass expresses the earth through notes linked together and played in jolts. The Flutes, through their singing strokes, which rise and fall, imitate the course and murmur of water. The air is painted by movements followed by cadences formed by the small flutes. Finally, the violins, with their lively and brilliant features, represent the activity of fire...."

Vivas a Rebel e outros.
