- After being quite happy and surprised with the stock burrs, I had to try the SSP. If you have the 83 and going to install yourself, I hope this helps!

Definitely a good idea to get toothpicks for cleaning out the screws and stuff so you don't end up stripping the screws and its easier to get the screws loose. And also using chopsticks are good for trying to wedge burrs out without risking scratching the burrs. Also helps hold the rotational burr in place when loosening or tightening the burr.
Would love to see these compared to the 64 HU’s. The cut pattern looks so similar but I wonder whether these produce more or less fines. From a DF64 user with the HU burrs. Thx!

Random question about the anti popcorn device. Where do I get the one for the DF83? I checked the portakeeper website but only see one for the DF64P. Are they interchangeable?

It should say 64, 64E and 64P. I will check thanks for letting me know! Yes they are Interchangeable, but the center opening in the burrs Is larger although the outside diameter is the same (hard to explain) but the middle anti popcorn piece does not cover as much of the opening. It still works well regardless
@PortaKeeper, I just bought the anti-popcorning disc from your website. It was listed for the 64 versions, but I want to confirm that it will work in the 83. I think I've read somewhere that it will.

Sera has a great Phillips screwdriver that minimizes slippage.
@PortaKeeper, Thanks for the detailed video. I wish I saw your video earlier as I have not marked the X on the lid with the top burrs so I don't know which way it's suppose to go. How can I fix this so I get the alignment correct?
Only way to check really is to do the marker test. If it aligns well in that position, mark it and your good. If not rotate 180 degrees

Hi there! Thanks for all the content! Can I ask you a question? How many kilos you needed to season this burrs? I also have the DF83 with the ssp espresso burrs. After 3 kilos I think they are not in its full potential. I constantly found some channeling in the espresso puck and I think is due to this but I’m no sure. How was your experience? Pd: my burrs are perfectly aligned.
I don't recommend rushing the seasoning process. Coated burrs will take longer than uncoated burrs. I notice a difference after 10 pounds, will probably be upwards of 15-20 before really starting to smooth out.
Hi...can you confirm whether or not Mazzer Major 83mm burrs are interchangeable with the Italmill O.E. burrs and the SSP burrs that you feature here please?
I do not have a set of Mazzer burrs but yes the SSP are interchangeable. I have heard others mention that they have used some of the Major burrs in theirs but have not done personally.
Are the SSP High Uniformity burrs also known as the SSP Mazzer Major Espresso burrs on their website? I’m struggling to find SSP HU burrs in the uk but it could be I’m searching the wrong name.

Yes they fit both
Isn’t a torque indication for these burr screws ? I’d prefer tighten with an idea or the torque required
If there is, I don't know what it is. Hand tight and snugged up

How is it for crossthreading? On the DF64 cross threading was so common when replacing the collar.
Maybe in early 64 but my later one is easy. The 83 even better yet
@PortaKeeper Fantastic, wrecked my second gen DF64 by crossthreading it, I was always super careful and still managed to mess it up, but at least now I have an excuse to buy the DF83.

How have the ssp burrs been compared to the stock stainless steel ones?
Still breaking them in right now but I feel like overall much better body while having a fair amount of clarity, more than stock.
@@portakeeperkindly explain breaking on. As I just installed new SSP hu reds and I can't dial in shots. My zero point sounds like it resets, yes sounds, because after I grind and pull a shot I have to grind again as I'm dialing in and then I go finer and it hits zero point or sound like it does. When I take the collar off and pull the top burr carrier I see grinds stuck on bottom burr between the burr and the three posts that are on the bottom carrier. Once I clean it I can then reset to zero. But then same thing again and I have to take it apart to set finer. I don't get it. And I use the bellows while machine is still running after grinding. Pls advise.
@@bleezal not sure I totally understand what’s going on but sounds like your doing things right, so makes me wonder if when you installed the ssp that one of the burrs is misaligned to the point you hear the “zero” but it’s not really because it’s misaligned enough. Not sure if that makes sense or not. I’d check alignment with dry erase first
@@portakeeper so I did an alignment at installation and it was near perfect. I figured it out. Grinds were getting stuck between the lower burr and the three burr carrier posts, so after grinding when I go to adjust finer it would squeel... The noise it makes when you're about to hit zero... But it isn't... So I go coarse then crank it finer whilst the grinder is running and it clears up and I'm good....
Aren't you supposed to marker the bottom burr first?
No, never heard of that. I do Both at the same time. Never been a problem. Most people complaining about alignment would never know difference anyways. Just keep adjusting until good. It’s not hard to mark both and adjust both.
Won't the spring affect the alignment every time you clean the grinder and install it back? also, what about when using the bellows, won't the spring compress down and change the coffee grounds size?
Spring spins freely and has I believe 6 point on top and 6 points on the bottom. It’s very strong spring. Bellows should not affect anything because I think you’d break your bellows before it compressed the burr carrier.
Can't you just move the indicator from 18 to zero?
You can move the metal indicator to the side, yes
You'll be OK if it's at the side. If it goes way to the rear then we'll have a real annoyance
