Hahahaha! That's my Second favorite part! I was DYING LAUGHING the first time I heard it. And I STILL do! ((First favorite part is the Mini-Reprise of 'Just A Man', right before the 'Bag' part!))
I love how just before Poseidon drowns the whole fleet, the text of the chorus isn’t complete and just ends on a timid "mercy". As if the people on board of the ships cry out to Poseidon to be spared
What I love about this is after the line “A Greek who reeks of false righteousness that’s what I hate” You can hear a bit of Piano from Athena’s songs coming through. Like she knows Poseidon is only further proving her point to Odysseus
"you totally could have avoided all this had you just killed my son, but no" is one of my favorite parts Because it shows his priorities, he doesn't care about his son, this is about his reputation and standing. If he'd just killed the Cyclops he wouldn't have had to go through all this.
I'd argue that it isn't about Poseidon not caring about his son - it's mocking the hypocrisy behind Odysseus's supposed righteousness. What Odysseus did was cruelty masked in kindness. If he had just killed Poseidon's son, as he was willing to do with another helpless child earlier, not only would this not be a problem he's facing for practical reasons, it also would have spared his son the shameful fate of a life as a crippled pariah.
YESSSS MY FAVORITE SONG IN THIS SAGA!!!!! I love how it calls out Ody sparing Polyphemus despite the fact that he killed an infant well before that. Although I like the interpretation that the only reason he spared the cyclops because of Polites telling him that mercy is still an option in Open Arms. :)
If you pay close attention you’ll notice that Ody never actually apologized, he EXPLAINED why he did what he did but the words “I’m sorry” or something of the same caliber is ever stated. Yeah he’s justified but Ody still shows a degree of arrogance here
@@wolfman2.055 the words "I'm sorry" doesn't really mean much. The others apologized by saying they didn't take any pleasure in his pain, they were just trying to escape. There is a lot of really good lines but I keep thinking about the message of the song "Ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves". The meaning behind "You totally could have avoided all this had you just killed my son" and "You're far too nice, mercy has a price". In the greek gods eyes, the right thing to do is to kill those that mean to do you and your loved ones harm, not because you are without kindness or compassion, but because they will rise against you if you don't. Ruthlessness is sparing yourself the pain of having those you spare come back to hurt you again. If Odysseus had killed the cyclops, Poseidon still would have been angry at his sons death, but he wouldn't have known who did it, and Odysseus and his men would still be alive and not threatened by the gods fury. Odysseus giving mercy cost him the lives of nearly all his men in Poseidon act of anger.
Well, to be fair, odysseus should've known better Imagine you hurt a man with a big powerful dad Then you yell to him all your personal information And not kill him What do you expect him/ his dad to do? (Place it in the time where you can duel to death) (Imo it sounds like the count of Monte Cristo lol)
The Cyclops and Poseidon's wrath is proof that Ody never fully learned the lesson of the infant, that he can't make half measures as it WILL come back to bite him.

ik i'm late but he didn't open the bag because it was his last resort, his wild card. ody thought poseidon could possibly forgive them or leave with a massive slap on a wrist, as poseidon acts like if they apologize he'll forgive them. you can also notice that the 'die' from poseidon was out of nowhere, giving ody almost no time to react.
Gotta ask. Why is Poseidon so angry that The cyclops was left alive? Is he angry cause the cyclops is now permanently crippled for life and wasn’t given an “honorable death”? Just kinda curious cause i knew Poseidon hated ody before but just not quite sure why this is what set him off here.
I think that’s the main reason why. iirc, Jorge (the creator) said he portrayed Poseidon as wanting to make Odysseus see that ruthlessness is necessary in life /he can’t always be merciful.
