    Selling firewood bundles has proven to be profitable! I entered the firewood bundle market this year and have already found they can add $$ to your overall operation. Like most things, there is a learning curve in becoming proficient making bundles and, after a short amount of time, I have become pretty fast making these. I can crank out about 40 in an hour by just working steady by myself.
    The wrapper I use is the Twister Industries Woodwrapper. They have a number of different models. Mine is the Standard Speed Quick Load model. Here is the link to my machine.

    The Ultratec dump trailer has been a very useful tool for our operation. We use it a lot. It
    is tough, light, and easy to maneuver with the quad. They are sold by Metsa Machines in Wisconsin. Here is the link.

    You know, i am aware that all these pieces of equipment don't come cheap. However, for the people that will spend a bunch of time trying to invent their own bundler instead of just buying one. I think those who can afford one and not buying one are missing the boat.
    I bought a cheaper manual John's welding bundler based on that wood guys recommendation, and we couldn't be happier with the investment. All that hand tying, and bags just can't touch a bundler, no way, no how

    Having made bundles for over 10 yr. I never stop the machine to tear the stretch wrap. Instead when it is on the 3rd wrap I simply push my hand through the stretch wrap while it is tight. Goes a lot faster. Give it a try. Hope it helps.

    Thanks for showing the wrapping machine, my only negative is adding plastic to the world. Is there no natural rapping, biodegradable methods? EG. Rope etc.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Steve. I appreciate your comments and I think you raise an excellent point. The benefits of this wrap is it stretches and squeezes the wood for tight packing. Im not sure of a biodegradable solution other than bags or twine...both of which significantly changes the process. Joe

      I'd rather have dipshits wad up some plastic and throw it out rather than plastic twine. Animals can swallow the twine.
      How fast does sisal decompose? Is it strong enough?

    As someone who has bought these bundles in the past, (when I lived in Cleveland) I wouldn't bother with the handles. The wood bundle chest is usually locked and a store associate has to get them anyway. So, there is little issue in getting the consumer to buy the product. The story boy carries them to the car anyways. Sure, you could say the consumer will have issues from the car to the burning area but it isn't something I ever thought about when I bought them. I was just happy to have some good dry wood for Thanksgiving and Christmas...

    I have a Built Rite firewood prosser they recommend you sell 400 to 500 ricks a season to benefit from it .Also i usually double my money on a load of logs which is great

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the comment Dewey! Built Rite's analysis reminds me of what one of my restaurant owners said about trying to make a buck in food service. He said it's more about what you buy it for then what you sell it for. He said this is mostly true bc restaurants are very competitive within their markets and don't have much wiggle room on their menu price. They look to raise profits by their cost of goods. I argue that, at least for me, there is more to buying a processor than its ROI. To me, I need one to keep me in the game longer. I'm not getting any younger and I need this machine to do the grunt work for me! lol. Stay cool Dewey. Joe

    Great video! Love that “Twister”. I am considering selling bundles as well. Just curious, what do you sell them to the campgrounds and convenience stores for and what do they charge for them? I appreciate you covering all these great topics! Keep up the good work!

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It seems retailers shoot for a 40% markup. I look at what neighboring stores sell their's for and calculate in that general area. My stores range from 3.50 to $4. They sell approx $6.99 . Campgrounds, now that I think of it, are about the same $$ and markup. I put more wood in the camp bundles but the wood cost me less. Joe

    One of the bundle handles melted a drip on my finger after someone threw the log with the handle stapled to it into the smoker, and I removed it a second too late. The handles are a law suit waiting to happen. A guy here sells firewood in a mesh bag like a heavy onion bag.

    I've 3d printed some fairly strong parts with a 20-30% wood fiber PLA. It'd probably take 2 hours or so to print a single handle, but if you got everything dialed in you should be able to print 6-8 in one go on a good sized printer like a creality 3d 1x1ft. You can increase infill to get an idea of required strength (solid would be ridiculous and take longer to print). It can be stained and sanded, under a grand investment but can be a lot of messing around calibrating.
    Downside: lets be real everyone is going to burn them.

    Thinking of getting into bundles myself. I’m not into the firewood business yet, I truck logs full time, but I was a logger originally and I miss running saws and also enjoy splitting wood. Crazy, I know. Being that I own the truck and haul off different guys, I have access to some affordable wood and I have a decent splitter but no dump truck or trailer. Im really busy truckin all week and don’t have time to blow out 2 or 3 cords a day during the week so I thought if I could do up and sell a cord or 2 of bundles a week it would satisfy my need to work up wood and maybe even put a little money in the jar. Just curious how you guys work it with your customers, do you sell them the bundles up front for a set price and they are responsible for getting them sold at what ever price they mark up to, or do you set up a display and they handle the sale for a percentage? My concern is theft from outside displays and then the store not covering the cost of stolen bundles.

    How much do you get for a bundle at the camp grounds? You said you get 170 bundles from a full cord.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get around $3.50 to $4. In theory there are 170 .75cf bundles in a cord. For practical purposes I never had that yield from a cord bc I throw out a lot of logs that don't fit nicely in a bundle. Joe

    I’m not sure if I missed something but I don’t see how 12” x 12” x 16”= a cubic ft.

    • @ohiowoodburner
      @ohiowoodburner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a little off isn't it Michael! I guess working with 16" logs makes for the discrepency. At least with .75 cf it comes out correctly at 9"x9"x16" ... I have always been told there are 128 1cf bundles in a cord but I have never gotten near that. Too many logs are excluded bc of twist, knots etc. Joe

    • @michaelmacvicar2654
      @michaelmacvicar2654 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok thanks! So you probably just let it go at 1.3 cubic feet? That wouldn’t bother me. I plan to do this myself but I’ll make a simple bundling rack till I can afford better machinery. I appreciate you and folks like you sharing your story. Have a good day
