Setting a few swarm traps in late March of 2020. I discuss a few reminders as we get started in a new year and I explain some changes I am making for this year.
Easier than rubbing propolis, make a tincture. Pour a pint of Everclear into a quart jar, toss all your propolis scrapings in it, shake it up once a day. Mop the tincture onto inner surface of walls. Has a fantastic aroma. I think LGO and Swarm Commander attract bees; a box that smells like home gets them to stay. Plus, add a frame of brood ASAP.
Scout bees don't fly around in potential hives as it is too dark. They walk round the perimeter of the inside, both horizontally and vertically and calculate the volume of the space available. If the scout bee finds the location and size worth reporting, it then flies back to the swarm and tells the other scout bees where it is, using the same waggle-dance they use if they were giving the route to a good source of resources. The scout bees danced to then fly off and inspect the site, and if in agreement with the original scout bee, then they do the same to more scout bees. This carries on until all the scouts have had a look and decided it is the place to go. they then rouse the swarm and it flies to the new hive.
I just put 3 traps out for the first time this year. I have other people around me that keep bees. Fingers crossed i get at least one swarm. I baited with lemongrass oil.
Getting Old Brood Comb has been impossible for me. I don't have any and I contacted 5 different Beekeepers and got a unanimous No on getting any from them. I made a tincture with an old damaged comb and propolis to coat the inside of the box with.
I have swarm traps just like your’s. I have the metal circle gate. I highly recommend buying them for your trap. They make it so easy to lock the bees in for transporting the bees to the bee yard
Swarm commander sprayed inside the hive is a bad idea, it can be overpowering and run the bees out. You should spray outside the hive on a neighboring tree. The bees will find the scent then the box.
First year using swarm commander. I am experiencing the same issue on multi traps. Bees hanging under the trap. I have one building comb that I will be colecting later today.
Robert Jackson , My 1st year using Swarm Commander as well and when I caught the swarm, about half of the bees were hanging under the hive as well! I wonder what is causing that?
if a swarm stays on the outside of the trap, that means you have to much Swarm Commander of Lemon gras oil. Just use less and they will come in. i spray it on a cotton pad and put in in a little zip lock bag. The locked bag releases enough. Dr Leo uses the plastic test bottles for that. It works the same. I just found an old bird house full of small honey bee's very close to my house.I want them.What should I do?There is also a swarm of bees 2 houses down going into the outside wall of the guest house.?
Do you check your swarm traps to rid them of wasp, here in Missouri I go every weekend and check for wasp and kill them. Most every trap will have a wasp nest starting in it. I don't no if this is necessary?

I always use 2 one inch holes overlapping like a figure 8. Caught 14 swarms this year.

a piece of 1/2 in hardware cloth over the hole works good too

If it is a prime swarm and your using a 5 frame swarm box like the one in the video, it may be that there isnt enough room for them.

I use a 7/8 drill bit 1 inch hole to big 7/8 drill bit
Not too big, actually they prefer larger hole.
