Dan: If all that is true, it is still completely self-referential, and a joke that only people who have watched SNL steadily since it's sstart in the seventies would get. That is way to much to expect of the audience.
StupidCrapyolo They were suppose to be uncomfortable, they did that on purpose. He’s purposely playing an unfunny asshole. The first two minutes are not suppose to be funny, they are just set up for the punchline.
lol, a comedian in a comedy sketch isn't funny on purpose?! just because he is playing an asshole doesn't mean it isn't supposed to be funny, the "two assholes" sketch with Kristen wig and Jason is very funny even though they play as assholes! there are plenty of other examples where annoying characters can be funny. This guy flopped plain and simple.
Khal Drogo Yes he’s purposely playing a character who’s a douche and saying politically incorrect things said to make the audience feel uncomfortable, so yes the first 2 min wasn’t suppose to be funny, it’s just a set up for the punch line that starts to formulate when Keenan comes in.
Payton Woolsey those horrible jokes were mixed with politically incorrect jokes said to make the audience feel awkward because he was playing somebody who’s an unfunny asshole trying too hard to be cool. That’s why when the cooler funnier class clown comes at the end Keenan says “now that’s how it’s done!”
Payton Woolsey And nobody said it was suppose be intricate and deep either lol cause it certainly wasn’t that. But they did purposely make the first 2 min unfunny to set up the punchline.
The first couple minutes I was thinking "wow this is bad and uncomfortable", but by the end I saw that it was intentional and 4th-wall breaking, sort of. The point of the sketch was to show that a new cast member (student) wanted to make a big impression on the class (audience) and failed miserably. It was supposed to not make you laugh on purpose, people. If you want slapstick comedy go watch the 3 stooges or something.
No it wasn't on purpose, stop making dumb excuses! a guy playing a tragic, a loser or an outcast character can be as funny as anything else. This guy flopped, he just doesn't have the funny bone. I don't see him in the future of snl.
That's a really dumb way to rationalize. Kate could walk out and say "Hello" and leave the stage and people would think it's genius and alters the universe as we know it. No idiot, it's just bad writing.

It was kind of funny but why does it seem like he pissed in the writing team’s catering? Let’s not forget Miley Cyrus talking about how he was a bad kisser 😂
This was amazing front to back. Great premise, and Luke Null went all-in on it, knowing the audience would be very uncomfortable for the first two minutes. Great commitment from everyone involved.
This sketch is funny af. In the beginning he reminds me of that one loud and obnoxious that talks and walks around all the fucking time. Everyone knows that guy. Then it flips around and it's actually only his first day. It went bad when his personality turned out to be fake.
If I didnt read the comments here I would have never guessed so many people would have trouble understanding a fairly straightforward comedy skit. I find this skit hilarious. even funnier when nobody laughs as the kid is going on and on However it is possible you get it and still don't like it or think its funny, and thats perfectly okay.
@@ParallelUniversity Fully agree, it was even on a fairly good show. It didn't work then, it doesn't work now. And it is not about actors, they did actually better work than maybe usual to play that tragedy. The writers just forgot to add comedy in it. It felt more educational than a real comedy. Maybe in that role, it worked very well...
America is about 20 or 30 years behind most of the world on sex stuff so yeah, the American Propaganda machine keeps shoving same sex issues down everyone's throats until the older people die out and it isn't a thing anymore and everyone gets their rights. Or at least stops getting bullied or killed over their sexuality. There are still people who are 40 or 50 and still dealing with childhood trauma from being picked on so the machine is just trying to lesson that by accepting everyone. I wanted to love him so bad. Apparently he's a kickass singer. They should bring that out somehow. Everyone loves a dude that can sing. Score him some audience points. He's definitely been out shined by the other two but I still have high hopes for him. Idk if you believe in astrology but he's a cancer. He might take longer to get used to things than other members who are naturally more adventurous.
what? is that new kind of funny, not funny? No dude stop making excuses, they failed hard! Im a huge snl fan but that first part was cringe as hell, not a single laugh from the audience.
Totally agree, he suppose to be an unfunny asshole the first two minutes who sucks at being cool. That’s the whole point of the skit. Everybody leaving comments about how the beginning sucked are missing the point.
Harrison Nguyen Nope, it’s suppose to be unfunny the first 2 minutes. He literally called the girl a lesbian for not going on a date with him and then makes fun of the Jewish and black guy, It’s so obvious he’s sayin politically incorrect things to purposely make the audience uncomfortable and to set up the punchline when Keenan comes in.
There's a lot of hate for this skit, but I thought it was quite funny. The humor comes from the awkwardness of the beginning, which makes sense because of him being a new student.
Pyridius Yeah you get to actually feel the discomfort of the class rather than being omniscient. I hate how uncomfortable people are now with any ambiguity in entertainment. The punchline could not have worked as effectively with any other set up.
furioushazaa No. This was a poorly-written sketch that tried to break the rules but failed. Any seasoned comedy writer would know that this was a failure.
Whoever wrote this is a really good fucking writer, or they are good writers. Very intelligent sketch. I like that they're not just writing silly slapstick sketches.
Spencer Allbritton This skit was about how stupid bullies are, inner feelings directed outward. This nonsense happens not just in adolescence but continues into adult hood. Luke's performance was spot on!
I find much of recent SNL content is based on harassment based situations, and is difficult to watch... This was light in comparison. I don't know if SNL are trying to be provocative to move the agenda on, I hope so, or are just in some cases playing on the discomfort of the audience.
I thought this was a great sketch. If anything, Luke was just too good at being an a-hole, as his character was supposed to be. It threw the audience off for a bit. But I enjoy comedy like this; it's a bit surreal. I don't need every moment of a sketch to be laugh-out-loud funny. Plus, it looks like Luke actually memorized his lines, as opposed to all the other SNL players, who are looking at cue cards every other second.
dude, I disagree about it being a great sketch (due to writers not luke), but I completely agree with the memorizing lines thing. It was so refreshing! Some cast members have like 3 lines the entire show and read them off of cue cards
J L, well, I said a "bit surreal," meaning slightly. Not surreal in the sense of Monty Python surreal, or surreal like the SNL 'Potato Chip' sketch. The sketch is a bit strange or bizarre in the way it is presented, where, I think, the first half of the sketch is designed not to really get a laugh at all, to an unusual length/degree, but the second half is. Not the typical SNL sketch, or the typical comedy sketch in general. That's why quite a few people apparently don't like it; it defies their expectations of what comedy is supposed to be. Of course, some people just don't think it's funny, but what can you do.
Jason Meadows Except it is blatantly straight forward and not surreal in the least. It was clear from the beginning that the intent was to make this character unlikable from the beginning. If that’s the case, the only way to turn the sketch is to make his all his interactions “cringy” to begin with and then mock him later. I’m guessing they thought by extending the horrible jokes In the first half, it would become funny through repetition. This skit was a mess.
J L, while true that it was clear that Luke's character was supposed to be unlikable or "cringy", it still defied audience expectations, because (and I'm quoting someone else from this comments section), I don't think a sketch typically and purposefully makes an audience member say to himself, "wow this is bad and uncomfortable," to the degree the first half of the sketch made me and some other commentators, who liked the sketch, feel. Again, it was the unusual degree or length of that cringiness which screwed with some people watching. When I watched the first half of the sketch, I felt like, "What the f*ck?" It was almost as if the first half of the sketch was designed to make it look like the whole sketch would fail. It was unusual in its delivery and that's what made it funnier than just the material itself. Then again, I admit it could all have been completely unintended by the writers and, like some people who have also commented here have said, I'm reading too much into it.
@@MoMo-pz2bb If they really meant "actors," then yes. A plural subject would take "don't." But I thought maybe that was just a typo and they meant "actor."

Dan: If all that is true, it is still completely self-referential, and a joke that only people who have watched SNL steadily since it's sstart in the seventies would get. That is way to much to expect of the audience.
Oh man those first 2 minutes were so fucking uncomfortable. Poor guy.
Desean 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
No it wasn't on purpose, stop making dumb excuses! a guy playing a tragic, a loser or an outcast character can be as funny as anything else. This guy flopped, he just doesn't have the funny bone. I don't see him in the future of snl.
You must watch Rick and Morty huh?
That's a really dumb way to rationalize. Kate could walk out and say "Hello" and leave the stage and people would think it's genius and alters the universe as we know it. No idiot, it's just bad writing.
Ya we got it... It just wasn’t funny....
Every school has a kid like this.
After rewatching this sketch it actually is kind of funny. Once you get that the beginning is supposed to be awkward
How. How dumb can the average audience of SNL be that they didn't know - on the first go around - that the first half is set up not the joke.
@@Hahahahaaahaahaa Well, sometimes SNL misses the mark. Sometimes it's just a bad sketch. Sometimes they have a great concept but the execution just doesn't come together. So I initially assumed this was going to be one of those bad sketches, but was pleasantly surprised to see the second half pull off the joke.
We understood it... it’s just the fact that it wasn’t funny, but to be honest, I don’t blame him. I think the writing was kinda trash for this skit. At least in my opinion
@@Hahahahaaahaahaa Watching this back 5 years later, yeah…people are complete idiots. It was so blatantly obvious that the first part was supposed to be cringey to set up the second half of the skit.

I feel terrible for Luke. He finally gets his own skit to shine through and make an impact and this what comes out. This just made me feel sad inside. Ugh, hopefully next week Luke. We're rooting for you
Yeah that wasn't even close to funny
Yeah but you all laugh at the stupidest skits.
Liam Humel fuck Luke
It was kind of funny but why does it seem like he pissed in the writing team’s catering? Let’s not forget Miley Cyrus talking about how he was a bad kisser 😂
Nicholas Pesch probably like a freshman hazing sketch. Jon Rudnitsky's first sketch involved him getting licked on and grinder on by Miley Cyrus

@@GL-yt lol me too
This was amazing front to back.
It went bad when his personality turned out to be fake.
lol thanks i didn't get that from watching the video
Nobody knows that guy

Game Couch dude we saw the skit you don't have to explain the plot
oh now I see it
If I didnt read the comments here I would have never guessed so many people would have trouble understanding a fairly straightforward comedy skit.
I find this skit hilarious. even funnier when nobody laughs as the kid is going on and on
However it is possible you get it and still don't like it or think its funny, and thats perfectly okay.
I love SNL, and I get the premise of this skit and why it's supposed to be funny, but honestly it's one of the worst SNL sketches in history.
@@JLConawayII it was terrible
@@ParallelUniversity Fully agree, it was even on a fairly good show. It didn't work then, it doesn't work now. And it is not about actors, they did actually better work than maybe usual to play that tragedy. The writers just forgot to add comedy in it. It felt more educational than a real comedy. This was actually really funny considering that was so horrible to watch.
That was the whole point
I think we did not understand where the sketch was going, so it was very uncomfortable to watch in the beginning until we saw we the end.
this is actually an outstanding performance by Luke Null, what a beast.
He’s the reason why all the dark revealing jokes at the end are so funny to me
“I’m lesbian” - the room of people applaud
as they should
America is about 20 or 30 years behind most of the world on sex stuff so yeah, the American Propaganda machine keeps shoving same sex issues down everyone's throats until the older people die out and it isn't a thing anymore and everyone gets their rights. Or at least stops getting bullied or killed over their sexuality. There are still people who are 40 or 50 and still dealing with childhood trauma from being picked on so the machine is just trying to lesson that by accepting everyone. It's annoying but perhaps necessary.
@@HighStakesDanny America is not 20-30 years behind on anything lol. We set the pace, as they say ‘America sneezes, the world catches a cold’. Cute try though with your obvious liberal propaganda programming at work.

I think Luke nailed it. That wouldn´t be an easy character to play but he did a fantastic job.
He said, "And that leaves me," and I almost choked on my peppermint 💀 🤣
The plot twist put me in tears omfg🤣🤣🤣🤣
Kenan’s speech felt like it was directed at Luke himself for the terrible performance, not his character lol
G.C. - I know, right?! 😂😭🚫
So true.
He did a good job of portraying an unfunny and extremely unlikable asshole. Not a great job. Just a good one.
Why do you think it was a terrible performance? It wasn't supposed to make us laugh. It was setting up the punchline.
G.C. Real talk lol
Who would have thought Keenan would be the only thing holding this show together? Every time he’s in a sketch anymore it’s just to insert some actual comedy into terrible writing. I hope he gets paid more.
Didn’t really enjoy him during his early years but he has really come into his own.
I still don't enjoy him. He's horrible, can't act, breaks all the time, but I agree he's about the most positive thing in this season so far lol
intalent He breaks on purpose he smile we smile
I must say, I think Keenan is terribly overrated. He does the exact same thing in every sketch he is in, and that weird smile of his is almost punchable. But maybe he is good for the American audience....
Michael Holmgaard He is good period foreigner.

Incredible how silent the audience is at the beginning. Shit was Seinfeld level great.
Greatly outdated and cliche?
@@tibb75 Seinfeld wasn't cliche or outdated. It was great for its time and it's called cliche now because so many shows have taken the mold Seinfeld built and filled it with whatever they wanted.

Maybe they made it a bad skit on purpose so in an ironic twist the skit breaks the fourth wall making it a new kind of funny
they did that once and it wasn't very funny. The skit was called "Jerry's Place".
what? is that new kind of funny, not funny? No dude stop making excuses, they failed hard! Im a huge snl fan but that first part was cringe as hell, not a single laugh from the audience.
Totally agree, he suppose to be an unfunny asshole the first two minutes who sucks at being cool. That’s the whole point of the skit. Everybody leaving comments about how the beginning sucked are missing the point.
Nope, just bad writing. The more you try to rationalize dumb things, the dumber you become.
The audience was DEAD in the beginning

It wasn't supposed to be funny in the beginning. It was just a long set up for the punchline.
Mister Nelson it's like they weren't filming it live
Why would they laugh at something that isn't funny?
There's a lot of hate for this skit, but I thought it was quite funny. The humor comes from the awkwardness of the beginning, which makes sense because of him being a new student.
Pyridius Yeah you get to actually feel the discomfort of the class rather than being omniscient. I hate how uncomfortable people are now with any ambiguity in entertainment. The punchline could not have worked as effectively with any other set up.

“NERDELSTEIN! NERDELDEEN!”
Damn that awkward silence was more hilarious than the skit
Love that random brown piece of hair in Kelly, oh oops sorry, *JACQUELINES* "hair". 😂😂😂
Jason Meadows You may want to go back and look up the definition of surreal.
Luke Null should have had more roles. He was a great cast member!
Well he's just earned himself about a decade's worth of detention
