As a New Englander, completely agree on the Dunkin Donuts coffee perspective. They taste good and get the job done, but balance quality with speed. The region is blessed with a lot of really good local chains (e.g. Aroma Joes) and if you want premium we have fantastic locally owned shops.

As someone who does not like to fly this was eye opening. I live in Mass and know Cape Air as the airline to get to Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. I didn't realize that they had expanded their flight options! Also, Manchester Regional is located in New Hampshire. Mass does have a Manchester just not with an airport. Hope you enjoyed the foliage and your train back to NY!

They have expanded in recent years not just in the northeast US but also to the Caribbean and in Montana.

I'm sure the pilot appreciates all the modern safety equipment and screens. There have been many updates since 1989.
PS My husband was the designer of the hardware that runs those new screens in aircraft.

Having flown these, the G1000NXi was the best part of the entire aircraft, be sure to pass that along to your husband! The 402 flew better and had better performance and - surprisingly - reliability, so I am sad to see it go. Still, they needed to be replaced, they were starting to need more frequent maintenance on minor parts due to their age.

Vermonter here, it's great to see people using Cape Air to get here, I just wish they served more airports in the state. I think more flights to BTV would be well-used, seeing as there is only one daily flight to Boston - not necessarily as an end destination, but for more JetBlue connections.

Hey Paul! I love your videos! As a life-long New Englander, I can say Dunk's has gone downhill drastically since they went global. I try to visit local "mom and pop" coffee shops, reserving Dunks as an "only choice" option if nothing else is available.

I have flown Cape Air a BUNCH of times and always seem to come away with a (good) story.
They are a great little airline and serve a very popular niche.
It is always fun to see you (Paul) wander off the beaten path.

I fell in love with these small planes in the early 80's. I had to fly from Charlotte to an airport near Boone for a wedding. Imagine my surprise when walking out of the gate I saw what to me was a private plane. I don't remember the airline's name but I do remember that Navaho Chieftan! I was gobsmacked when they put my luggage in a locker that was part of the engine nacelle. I flew in the front passenger seat due to my weight. During the flight the pilot announced that they couldn't serve us due to the bumpy weather, so they slid a cooler and handed me a big thermos. In the cooler were bottled beverages and various sandwiches wrapped in wax paper. The sandwiches were from a fairly popular deli in Charlotte. I poured a cup of coffee and took a Waldorf Chicken Salad sandwich, and a bag of chips then passed the cooler and thermos on. To this day it might have been the best meal I've ever had in the sky.
What it was is that we felt like participants and not just passengers.

“Yesterday here in Boston the weather was dreadful”. It was interesting that you published this video on a morning that you could have said the same thing, although yesterday’s dreadful weather was snow. Lots and lots and lots of snow.
As always, brilliant trip report. BTW I too like flying in small planes.

I love flying small commuter and EAS airlines. I recently flew on one of Denver Air Connection's Dornier 328Jets and it was a fantastic experience. Those planes have the craziest acceleration on the takeoff roll that I've ever experienced. Very fun.

Love that you visited my home airport of Boston, Paul! Please come back soon! I will say that as someone who grew up in Massachusetts, there are people here that will get defensive about their Dunks 😂 sorry you got flak for your comment about it but I totally understood what you were saying and wasn’t offended.
Also, in case anyone hasn’t mentioned it yet-Manchester Boston Airport is actually in New Hampshire, not Massachusetts. The airport renamed itself a few years back to get more people from Greater Boston to use it 😅

At 9:25 is the town of Burlington, Massachusetts, my hometown. The body of water in the center-right is the Town's water supply, the Mill Pond Reservoir, and just under the prop is the house I grew up in (an old farmhouse built in about 1715, and predates the incorporation of the town by about 84 years), and where my parents still live. My dad is a flight buff, flies small planes and gliders in New Hampshire. If he was in the yard that day, he almost definitely looked up and saw you.

Hey Paul, Great video! So you might not have known this at the time you recorded the video, but at the 2 minute 59 second mark you show a picture of a Cape Air Cessna 402 with tail number N121PB. If you Google this aircraft, you will find out that this is the actual plane from the TV show Wings back in the 1990's. In the TV Show the fictional airline was called Sandpiper Air and they flew to the fictional Tom Nevers Field on Nantucket. Cape Air has owned this aircraft since shortly after the show aired.

I used to work for Cape Air a million years ago and I remember the pilots really disliking N121PB (aka Peanut Butter) because for whatever reason it weighed a noticeable amount more than the rest of the fleet so it always made doing the weight and balance more difficult.

My wife and I have taken that Cape Air flight several times. We have now discovered the Amtrak EAE to Rutland and kind of like it best now. The Cape Air terminal is quite a walk from the Southwest gate and the Cessna 402's are quite noisy and cramped. We find that our total time on the road from Annapolis to Rutland is not too different between flying and Amtrak is a bit more civilized, think we'll take the train from now on.

FUN FACT: The Eviation Alice electric aircraft Cape Air has on order, when it came to determining the aircrafts' MTOW, factored in that the avg. weight for each passenger (not counting their bags, just their weight) would be 267lbs. Either they're bein' better safe than sorry, OR that the avg. pax had way too many Dunkin Donuts. 😂

I took Cape Air a few years ago before covid. The flight was from Boston Logan to Provincetown. The gate agent asked our weight and my friend and I were joking about how much we weighted. The agent was not amused and politely told us if we lied and the weight distribution was off. We had a chance of not getting airborne or a ruff landing. Also we were in the older Cessna and the pilot had his arm out the window as we took off down the runway, disconcerning to say the least but it was a fun short fight and reasonable

    Cape Air aircraft mechanic here.
    Fun Fact:
The taxiing airplane at 0:54 was the airplane featured in the title sequence of the NBC tv show *Wings.* That exact one.
And if you're lucky enough to have it for your next flight, you can see the sticker of authenticity/commemoration. It sits just left of the entry door.

Walking to the plane on the ramp reminds me of a trip I took years ago on US Air. We were going from KSHD in Virginia to KCHS (Charleston, SC). The flight had us changing planes in Pittsburgh. When it was time to board our flight to Charleston, we walked out onto the ramp where there was a gaggle of US Air commuter planes all headed to different small airports like Charleston. And people were all getting on different planes according to their boarding passes. It was like a bus station. Definitely pre 9-11. As we took off, I, along with everyone else, wondered in the back of our minds “Did I get on the right plane?” Sure enough, as we landed and taxied to the terminal, the captain came onto the loudspeaker and announced “I’d like to welcome everyone to Beaufort, South Carolina.” The entire plane gasped in unison with the sudden shock of realizing that they had boarded the the wrong plane in that disorganized mess on the ramp in Pittsburgh. The captain immediately followed up with “I’m just kidding. Welcome to Charleston. “

Nice video of an aircraft type I'd never even heard of! I always enjoy anything to do with the Boston area as that was the first US city I ever visited.
Just a point though, I think Manchester-Boston airport is in New Hampshire, not Massachusetts.

Yes it is in NH. It’s confusing because they threw Boston into the name, even though it is a good distance outside that city. Appeals mainly to discount carriers.

      Definitely NH!
Gotta say I enjoy that Cape Air gets some notice in this video. I worked in BOS for a summer with them and they will always have a special place in my heart. The new Tecnam is nice!!

What happens is that Manchester, NH (sister city to the one in northern England) is a low-cost (to the airlines) alternative to BOS (Logan Airport), just as is Providence, RI as well and the owners of the airport (to lure low-cost carriers, just like in most of Europe) want to stress out that point in their naming.

Cape Air is a very interesting airline to fly, different than the major carriers. I've flown on their Cessna 402s in Montana a number of times, and really enjoyed the flights. Looking forward to seeing the new aircraft when they get up this way!

The smallest commercial flight I have flown in was a DE Haviland Otter II. A twin engine turbo-prop which seated about 12/14 passengers, plus the pilot and co-pilot.. I flew from Atlantic City International to Baltimore/Washington International in the USA.. That was more than 30 years ago... I don't think they even make those planes anymore! Must say it was an excellent flight, even with the weather being a bit dicey at the time!

Just did the STLIRK leg. Very pleasant trip each way at 3-4000 feet 131knts. Even charged my phone. Good headroom and leg space for a short hop. IRK might be smallest ‘commercial’ airport . Both legs full plane.

That's Manchester, New Hampshire at 10:40 (not MA) AKA ManchVegas, not to be confused with Manchester-by-the-Sea which is actually in Massachusetts near Gloucester, or Manchester, CT which is of course in Connecticut near Hartford. You'll find plenty of Dunkin Donuts at all of the Manchesters here in New England.

It might be worth mentioning that the immediate right turn after takeoff was also to avoid wake turbulence of the departing 737.

Agree on the coffee. Yesterday I had a Burger King coffee and was pleasantly surprised, especially given the price. Better coffee (americano) than Costa but half the price. However, the quality does differ. McDonalds outlets in the Philippines consistently serve good strong coffee compared to McDonalds UK where it is weak and wishy-washy.

I flew the same route back in 2014 on one of their Cessna's. Think it might even be the same pilot but I've only got photos of the back of his head so can't be sure. Absolutely great fun, honestly worth the cost just for the entertainment factor even if you don't need to go to Vermont!

Always great to see a BOS TR - it was becoming very familar before 2020. It must have been fun on such a small aircraft at a major port. Seems like a pleasant flight descding towards that lovely scenery - great variety. As for DD coffee, I choose it over Starbucks but, given I've resolved never to buy Startbucks again as it's so awful, I'm not giving a big rap to DD!

I swear how do you guys do it? Get to travel where ever you want.. I love flying but can only do it so much. I will honestly love to fly and actually review airlines and post my thoughts on TH-cam and actually get to travel a lot.. instead of being stuck behind a register all day getting yelled at over something ridiculous 😒. This actually a dream to travel across the world flying in different aircraft both new and old exploring different countries and learning new things. That is a dream job right there and I love your videos take us across the world when others can't and actually sharing your experience 😁.
