Been living with one of these lil' characters for over 20 years now! He's less a pet and more a member of the family. Something the video fails to mention is that Caiques don't just 'bond' with one person like some parrots...if the whole family spends time with them, they'll 'bond' with the whole family. Hell, he even likes strangers most of the time! Basically anyone who pays attention to him is okay in his book =D

Cassuttus Tshirt Is it true that Caiques can turn on the owner and are harder to manage when they reach maturity after 3 to 4 years old? Let me know? I’m having second thoughts of getting one because most of the people at the pet stores are telling me this

    • @leximovies
      @leximovies 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@olygarcia5943 Caiques have hormonal "phases" that they go through usually 1-2 times per year that I've seen where they can be very aggressive. I've had caiques for 13 years and my oldest (almost 13) didn't start having hormonal issues until he was about 7 years old. He would literally attack me and I was honestly scared of him for about 2 weeks. His vet gave him an implant to suppress his hormones that worked. Now I have to get the implant for him maybe once per year unless I get lucky. Also, caiques need to be properly trained from early on in their life. This can help with the hormones. Just think long and hard about getting a caique and if you don't have much experience with them I would advise against it.

Hi, I know your comment is a few years old, but I was wondering how loud caiques are compared to lovebirds, as I have a 15 year old lovebird (who now lives with my parents, as I'm at university) and am considering getting a caique in a few years. Are caiques louder? Is their voice more high pitched when they "talk"? Do they have an actual scream (and is that the one that seems high-pitched in videos?) they only do to get attention or is it more like the "I'm just talking to you"-scream lovebirds have? I live in Germany now and pet stores here don't have actual birds so I can't just go to one to find out myself and it is hard to tell in videos, as microphones pick up bird screams kinda weird. Of course, I will definitely visit a breeder or something and meet a few caiques before getting one later on.
I really hope you reply and if you do, thank you so so much! Greetings from Germany!

Hi! Thank you for your video! My husband and I want to get a bird. We have always had parakeets but now we are looking into buying a bigger bird. We are looking for a cuddly bird. After doing some research we were determined on getting a sun conure since all the reviews said suns are known to be cuddly. However, we have been into a few bird fairs and every single person we have met have told us that the suns are too loud and the most returned bird 🙁 My husband now is not interested in a Sun. We are doing our homework before buying a bird because we want to make sure we give the bird the family it deserves. We know these birds can live for 30+ years so we want to be responsible. We never had children 😞 so this is going to be our forever baby 🤗 We are very excited!! I'm still in love with sun conures, my husband is in love with the other types of conures but now that I've been looking at videos and reviews about caiques I am falling in love with them....🙃 ah! Decisions!! What would you recommend us as new owners of a bigger bird? Which bird or birds do you think we should focus on?

I see your comment is 3 years old and you have probably already received the answers you were looking for.
We got a white bellied caique a few years ago. A female. We got it from the animal rescue league, it previous owner had passed away. She was fine at first, my daughter (12 at the time) was hesitant with her. She was fine with me but about 6 months would start to bite me. She would fly off the chair or her cage and go to land on me but end up clamping her beak into my arm or neck. Once they do it’s hard to get them off, and it hurts! I went to let her climb onto my hand once and she bit into my finger. She drew blood each time, feels like a pair of pliers being squeezed on you. I now leave her in the cage, and my daughter has warmed up to her, plays with her, and the parrot hasn’t bitten her yet. It still tries to go after me when I enter a room, so we keep the door closed. I would get rid of it but my daughter would be sad

What about bird aggression? I keep reading that it's a big thing with caiques, but they are flock bird, my guess would be it's about socialisation, if they spend too much time as an only bird, I assume excitement would grow dangerously high when meeting a new bird, which could easily lead to fights, hence they have a bad reputation for accepting new birds!

you need to dominate them. grab them firmly, but GENTLY on either side of the head with your thumb and index finger to control their head, and tip them onto their back in your hand while holding the head. do not yell, scream, or be mad at them when you do this. The sole purpose of the exercise is not to instill fear, or pain, but to get a very simple message across. if you continue to bite me, I will continue to do this back to you. that's it. talk gently to them and VERY gently stroke their neck, cheeks, and belly as you hold them. do this for a minute or two then immediately put them back in their cage and give them a very yummy treat. and praise them, and continue to talk softly to them. then do it again. be prepared to take more bites, but these will be the beginning of the end once your bird realizes
      1. you mean it no harm
      2. you won't be taking its shit.
this is not abuse, it's not about retribution or violence. it's about communicating boundary lines and respect in a universal language. Not only will your bird realize biting the hand is a pointless endeavor, but you will also learn when to respect your bird`s own wishes and autonomy. eventually it'll learn to communicate it's feelings and displeasure with you WITHOUT having to resort to violence, but you also need to learn when to listen.
it's not about a power trip, they aren't dogs who will obey your every command, and owning a bird requires you to shed a bit of ego. it's merely about teaching the bird how to respectfully communicate its feelings to you.

  • @leximovies

I don't mean to be a "Debbie Downer", but you should take great care in promoting caiques as pets. Caiques require owners who have LOTS of caique experience and parrot experience. Any parrot should be considered a long term commitment (at least 30+ years) and shouldn't be taken lightly. Caiques can be fun to watch and play with, BUT they also have a dark side and some people say that caiques are "bi-polar" (there's no scientific evidence to back that up, but I have 13 years of experience with them). They can be playful, cuddly, and cute and then one day their hormones kick in and they will viciously attack you for a month straight. PLEASE: do not get a caique if you if have little to no experience with birds!

ThePapino134 that's just the species. I have a female white bellied caique, I only found out she was female by going to the vet. I think the feel for how the bones are, kinda like people's bones.

+ThePapino134 The black headed caique is actually a different species of caique. You can't really tell unless you get their DNA tested in most cases

Interesting, she doesn’t know how to hold still for the bird, to give a stable perch. Not listening to any of her advice.
