Johnny Gill joined new edition in 1987. He was asked to join by Michael bivins as it was believed that Ralph was going to leave the group. Johnny still remains in New edition and still releases his solo albums.
This was '88, most of the group were in their late teens and early twenties. Johny Gill was a official member of the group, not part time and Bobby Brown was entering the height of his solo career with his 2nd and biggest album Don't Be Cruel. In fact, they were all on tour together with Al B Sure as opening up for them. It was the NE Heartbreak tour

J Gill joined the group and changed them because he was automatically the best singer in the group! It was also great to watch them all go on their own musical journey's and still creat really good music!
No one was in their teens at this time. They were anywhere from 20-23 years old. Bobby was already on his "Don't Be Cruel" grind killin it.

I went to the NE Heatbreak Tour concert in Cleveland. First of many times seeing them. I was hooked!❤

Bobby was already solo, and making waves at this time. For New Edition, this album was a comeback for them, Bobby's gone, it's a new time, hip hop was taking off. The NE HEARTBREAK album was kind of make it break for the group.
Johnny Gill coming in REALLY helped the group, though he was a solo singer himself, he was quite a star. Being in the group was huge for him as well, it helped his solo career as well. Prior to N.E Johnny's biggest hit was "Perfect Combination ", a duet with another teen singer Stacey Lattisaw in 1984.
Bobby was becoming a huge solo act and New Edition needed something to bring them to the new age, a mature hip sound. N.E. HEARTBREAK Album did it, this song was a huge reason. Great reaction guys 👍🏽
All the guys will always be part of NE, even Bobby. Years later, all six of them toured together but in different parts of the show, they split into their different acts. Bobby, Ralph, and Johnny did their solo songs, and BBD did their trio songs. Bobby was in and out depending on his personal issues tho. It's always good to see young people get into the music I grew up with.

Yall got it wrong Bobby Brown was kicked out of the group because he was wilding out, drinking and drugging and he was replaced by Johnny Gill, Johnny Gill was solo at the time and then he joined New Edition and Bobby Brown went solo and did his thing it shows all that in the movie, but I already knew that because I'm from that era.
Actually Johnny originally replaced Ralph cause during that time Ralph was thinking about going solo
@@andrewstaples8677 Ralph wanted to do a solo album. He never planned on leaving the group. The rest of the guys (BBD) thought he was, so BIV stepped to Johnny. That's why Ralph went off when they showed up in Minneapolis to do the NE Heartbreak album and Johnny was there. He even asked why Johnny was there. He didn't know that Johnny joined the group. He hated that Bobby wasn't in the group. But over time, he and Johnny became tight, and are tight till this very day.
And the answer, 34 years later, is no! no I can't! it makes my knees hurt.😂

Great reaction! Just a few corrections regarding the group. Bobby was already solo at this point, Don't be cruel was his second album. Ralph wanted to go solo so Johnny was supposed to replace him as the new lead singer, MCA reminded him that he was still under contract for another NE album so he couldn't leave. They were beyond teenage years when this came out. They were all grown men. Johnny replaced Bobby as a member of the group. They all did a split from Johnny solo, Ralph solo, Bobby solo and Bell Biv and Devo made BBD. I don't think Bobby could have done Johnny part on Can you stand the rain. Johnny had the most range and power in his voice out the group
