Great comment. This is the world I grew up in, literally right down the road. The mentality I got from Iowa wrestling has made everything in life easier for me. Hard nosed, Don give an inch, ever
The life wisdom you get from this. You can literally take all the things he’s talking about and input it into any aspect of your life. This is what I got from wrestling and it was the best thing I’ve ever done.
I started wrestling at the age of 13 and the Iowa Hawkeyes were the first team that captured my imagination. Brent Metcalf was my hero. Ive had the pleasure of meeting both Tom & Terry multiple times and I could tell the story of each occasion like they happened 5 minutes ago. That’s how powerful their presence and energy is. Great content, I’m now a lifelong subscriber and fan of you and your channel.
You're just nailing that shit in last few weeks without any mercy, man! Travis Stevens, Jimmy Pedro, Ben Askren, now Tom Brands! I'm looking forward to see more of the personas from (also jacket) wrestling world. And your travel to Dagestan is shapeing up more than outstanding. Awesome job Lex! Your channel is one of my favorites and the conversation with Danaher was second to none! You're worth every penny from that YT monetisation;)
I'm an Iowan and every family gathering of my life involved 3+ wrestling matches breaking out in the living room at Grandma and Grandpa's house while we waited for food. Nothing in life has ever seemed more hellish than wrestling practice, but my whole family did it so I thought it was normal. I was humbled at such a young age by this. I didn't know then how lucky I was for the lessons the sport taught. P.S. My mom still hangs the photo of Tom Brands holding me and my older brother for a photo soon after winning the Olympics. Oh, and Dan Gable turned up the speed on the treadmill I was using while training at Carver Hawkeye arena once. I never used that slow setting again.lolz
I absolutely love and appreciate everything you are doing by bringing a spotlight to the magical sport of wrestling. The sport has saved my life multiple times; from suicide in highschool to drug addiction in my early adult life.
Excellent podcast, Lex. Love hearing how Tom has evolved through his decades of coaching & wrestling, he sees the blend of the mental and physical side.
Been watching lex for about a year now. As a huge wrestling fan and a native Iowan, the Gable interview was an awesome surprise and now Brands! Keep it up Lex!
Impressive individual. I know pretty much nothing about wrestling, but the discipline that's clearly required is quite fascinating. Enjoyed this interview, thanks.
I’m from just south of Iowa City. When I would come home on leave from the Army my friends and I would go out to the bars downtown. Once we were at brothers and Tom & Terry walked in, the bar fell silent. Everyone parted a ways for them. Everyone who needs a little motivation in life needs to go onto flowrestling and watch his documentary. It’ll give you goosebumps.
I would definitely want my son to wrestle for this awesome coach because he would mold my son into a better man than I could ever because it takes a village to mold an individual. Everyone you encounter negatively or positively, will make you who are today. Winners breed winners!
Interesting finding out he had such a tuff Olympic bracket with what would be 3 world champs he beat. When watching the trials and Olympics all I remember was him dominating everyone.
Lex, you have spoken to the 2 biggest role models in my life. Dan Gable and Tom Brands. This episode was amazing, but I must admit I'm a little upset. I'm upset that you held on to this gem for so long. I sincerely hope that if you've spoken to any other wrestling legends, that you just release those episodes. Don't hold that content back from us, even if you're not in a suit, even if you think it was a bad conversation. The wisdom is nonetheless valuable.
I love this interview. I am a PSU fan, however, there would likely not even be wrestling as we know it today without what the Brands Brothers bring to competition. Though I do not alway admire their outspoken demeanors, I thank them for what they bring to wrestling, athletics, education and desire to be the best. I have truly grown to admire them and particularly thank them for what they have done for our country.
I’ve been doing Jiu Jitsu since 2007, but my kids have been wrestling for the last 5 years and it has completely changed the way I approach Jiu Jitsu. Really wish I would have wrestled when I was a kid.
I love this!!! Continue interviewing MMA athletes!!! I enjoyed Travis Stevens, Jimmy Pedro, Ben Askren, John Dahnaher and now Tom Brands! Keep them up @lex Fridman
I started wrestling as a freshmen in high school. After my first JV match I ca=me home and told the family, "I'm gonna be a state champion one day". My sister scoffed me. I ate it as fuel and changed my whole life.
Hey lex are you the DJ who introduces the track ' stuck in the middle of you by stealers wheel', in the movie resovior dogs? Your voice always reminds me of that scene 😆 Love your channel and content btw 👍
It’s not toughness but resilience. Resilience comprises toughness but also flexibility and adaptability whereas toughness alone can be brittle and easier to break.
If you’re a young athlete or a coach, you have to implement these concepts. He’s giving away concepts that were once hidden. He’s telling us how to become world class.
Lex talking about the bronze vs gold medal reminded me of something I read or heard once. That winning the silver medal actually feels worse than the bronze. The silver medal represents the near miss of being the greatest whereas a bronze medalist feels good about just being able to place. It makes sense.
I despise Iowa but you have to respect the Brands bros. Both are intense competitors and coaches and both are great for the sport. Really cool that you got Tom on the podcast.

Please visit Stillwater Oklahoma and visit John W Smith
Does Brands only recruit Christians (not atheists and agnostics)? Does he only recruit guys that have both parents together?
As a native Iowan, It's great to see a local hero given such a great stage. Thanks for this!
Agreed. Go Hawks!
Thank you for interviewing wrestlers. It means a lot to people who are not from the US and don't understand what American wrestling is.
Great comment. This is the world I grew up in, literally right down the road. The mentality I got from Iowa wrestling has made everything in life easier for me. Hard nosed, Don give an inch, ever

I like how Lex goes all philosophical on Tom and Tom is just like "wrestling solves all my problems".
I'm an Iowan and every family gathering of my life involved 3+ wrestling matches breaking out in the living room at Grandma and Grandpa's house while we waited for food.

This was really good. Can we get a Brands interview part 2 with Terry?
Love your style of interviewing. Thank you Lex!
"You've spilled Blood, Sweat...Tears?" *Tom Brands glares*
I love these episodes with Tom Brands, Ben Askren, John Danaher, Travis Stevens, etc. Keep it up.
Truth being told thank you lex... For this great interview... Much respect from Anaheim CA
Excellent podcast, Lex. Love hearing how Tom has evolved through his decades of coaching & wrestling, he sees the blend of the mental and physical side.
Fantastic job having all these grappling hall of famers recently. Love hearing their in depth perspectives.
Have any of you seen a Hawkeyes wrestling meet? Its like an NFL game. 16k people, cheerleaders, pyro, Metallica, people freaking out. Its amazing.
Was at Iowa vs penn st in 2020 The place was rocking
I’ve been to a few + Big 10 championships and NCAAs
Great experience!! At Carver very cool.
That monologue was actually powerful. As a lifelong Iowan and wrestler, this is amazing. So glad you decided to upload this
Great interview. Love his directness. Excellent motivation as well.
You always have the greatest interviews Lex. Keep up the great work.
I really appreciate the exposure you are giving judo and wrestling. Two of the hardest sports to excel in.
This conversation is a national treasure
🇺🇲
Lex,fantastic job,maybe Terry next?Go Hawks!
Been watching lex for about a year now. As a huge wrestling fan and a native Iowan, the Gable interview was an awesome surprise and now Brands! Keep it up Lex!
Love wrestling, love Iowa, my home state. Thanks lex and thanks Terry
This was Tom he was interviewing, not Terry..
as a resident of iowa, this absolutely rules
Impressive individual. I know pretty much nothing about wrestling, but the discipline that's clearly required is quite fascinating. Enjoyed this interview, thanks.
Lex, You literally don’t miss! This podcast is so great, thank you
The Brands' are living legends!
I’m from just south of Iowa City. When I would come home on leave from the Army my friends and I would go out to the bars downtown. Once we were at brothers and Tom & Terry walked in, the bar fell silent. Everyone parted a ways for them.

Can you link the documentary?
Thank You Lex!
Grew up right across the river. This is recorded in the heart of wrestling country. Man does this resonate.
An old training partner of mine is on the Hawkeye team now, looking forward to this interview
I just commented on a recent video, I wish you would get one of the Brands brothers or Cael Sanderson on. Glad you got Tom on.
Fantastic interview as usual Lex! I could listen to Tom Brands talk all day!

Terry brands ... such a wonderful man. Thanks Lex for bringing this convo to us all (Downunder-based BJJ Coach here). Sublime ...
I could listen to Tom Brands talk all day. Great stuff.
Great conversation and very inspiring! I will be listening to that again.
I would definitely want my son to wrestle for this awesome coach because he would mold my son into a better man than I could ever because it takes a village to mold an individual. Everyone you encounter negatively or positively, will make you who are today. Winners breed winners!
Lex was sitting on this Gold mine for 3 years. Best podcast in the world
Great interview.
Thanks!

I'm a Californian wrestler but Iowa Hawkeyes are my favorite wrestling team ⚡
Really great work, Lex. I love seeing passions of my life represented in your podcast, We few sufferers of this sport.
I liked your program before, Lex, but as a former wrestler you've really won me over with this one!
I’ve been doing Jiu Jitsu since 2007, but my kids have been wrestling for the last 5 years and it has completely changed the way I approach Jiu Jitsu. Really wish I would have wrestled when I was a kid.
FINALLY SOMEONE GOT BRANDS ON
Super impressed you brought Brands on, a great man
Excellent podcast Lex
That was awesome! Thanks for putting this out there.
I really hope to see more podcasts like this man! Great upload.
An hour isn't long enough for these kinds of conversations.

Great guest. Love this.
Dude is a different breed. What he did in Atlanta was remarkable. Utter domination.
That was great thank you for doing that!
Tom Brands is a legend
This is awesome!
I'm in love with this episode.
I loved this interview Lex, you gained a new subscriber!
Keep it up Mr. Fridman!!
Outstanding choice Lex!!
Wish I could give this more likes. The Brands brothers are real American heroes.
Legit legend! Go Hawkeyes.
I started wrestling as a freshmen in high school. After my first JV match I ca=me home and told the family, "I'm gonna be a state champion one day". My sister scoffed me. I ate it as fuel and changed my whole life.
What a machine. The guy is tough!
Looking forward to this!!!!
Excellent interview!
thank u for posting this.
Go hawks! Love to see it Lex!
Hey lex are you the DJ who introduces the track ' stuck in the middle of you by stealers wheel', in the movie resovior dogs? Your voice always reminds me of that scene 😆
Love your channel and content btw 👍
This a fantastic episode!!!!
It’s not toughness but resilience. Resilience comprises toughness but also flexibility and adaptability whereas toughness alone can be brittle and easier to break.
An importent distinction. Thanks.
If you’re a young athlete or a coach, you have to implement these concepts. He’s giving away concepts that were once hidden. He’s telling us how to become world class.
another awesome video!
Brands kills me. He's sneaky funny.
19:30 There's no place for a clock in the wrestling room!!! Maybe a clock that's timing a match.
The view count on this kind of bums me out, but this was fantastic.
Also, I think Lex would make for a fantastic fellow Iowan.
AWESOME!!!!! HELL YEA.
Thanks for Giving the video ;)
The fact this only has 50k views is criminal
Lex talking about the bronze vs gold medal reminded me of something I read or heard once. That winning the silver medal actually feels worse than the bronze. The silver medal represents the near miss of being the greatest whereas a bronze medalist feels good about just being able to place. It makes sense.
Go Hawks
Jeremy Horn would be an intriguing guest, early MMA pioneer with grappling and tons of pro bouts. Thanks for having these guys.
This was recorded before Lex completed the tutorial and got his full armor.
I despise Iowa but you have to respect the Brands bros. Both are intense competitors and coaches and both are great for the sport. Really cool that you got Tom on the podcast.
Sounds somewhat irrational since you have given no reasoning. Have you ever been to Iowa?
@@theonlycaulfield I was referring to the Hawkeyes, I've heard the state is beautiful.
Very few coaches I had ever motivated me. I think I could run through a wall for Mr. Brands !!!!
Thank you for this
Wrestling is the hardest sport in the world that gets the least recognition, that helps me in my adult life.
terry brands is inspirational
Thanks!
Brand’s brothers were beasts
Lex You need to have Terry Brands on the podcast!
You’re the best. 🤗
Lex is awesome! Wrestling, UFOs and psychedelics!
