Defeating Anubis Necromancess III with a Single Shield Boomerang Throw

  • Achieving a single Shield Boomerang throw victory against Anubis is a rather interesting endeavor; it resembles a precision platforming challenge rather than a typical boss fight. Unlike, for instance, Poler Kamrous, keeping the Shield’s orbit alive against Anubis requires decidedly more effort; it’s much more than a game of simple jumps and micro-adjustments. The glaring obstruction here is the fact that, after taking 16 or more damage, Anubis will burrow into the ground and summon several waves of pillars. You have no choice but to stall until this attack ends, then quickly reposition Zero so that the Shield hits Anubis shortly after he emerges from the sand. The necessity to make large, sweeping jumps across the arena means that you have to become intimately familiar with how to accurately manipulate the Shield’s position as it persistently pursues Zero.
Since Anubis is airborne, you have to keep the Shield’s orbit high. Constantly jumping over it while weaving between various attacks is the name of the game here. What will become readily apparent in this fight is that the Shield has separate hitboxes for determining when enemies are struck versus when Zero picks up the Shield. On many occasions, you’ll see Zero overlap his trusty frisbee without it registering as a return. Were it not for this lenience, this challenge would likely be impossible.
To start, I buffer a dash jump forward; this forces Anubis into shifting sides while throwing his cane to Zero’s current position, giving me time to throw the Shield and initiate the orbit while barely slinking by the cane as it returns to Anubis. The second hit should register just after Anubis performs his second cane toss. Critically, the cane’s hitbox is removed the moment Anubis begins to recede into the dunes.
The first set of pillars is fairly well synchronized with the Shield’s orbit, so they’re fairly easy to work around. The exception to this is if you happen to only get 2 waves instead of 3 or 4; I’ll get into why that can throw off your rhythm in a bit. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a reliable method of manipulating the number of pillar waves; reacting as quickly as possible is the only way forward, at least for me. For this set, for the narrowly-spaced pillars, I jump off the left one and move Zero a bit further to the left than is otherwise required; this is to adjust the Shield’s trajectory and drag its orbit left, allowing it to intersect Anubis when he returns while also granting me the space to keep jumping around it. The final set of pillars always spawn at the edges of the arena. Zero. The timing here is such that you can simply wait for them to begin converging, then wall jump over; the Shield won’t be in your way.
Anubis always resurfaces far away from Zero’s present position. It’s quite fortunate, then, that performing a wall jump off the widely-spaced pillars briefly places Zero away from the Shield’s orbit, meaning that Anubis will spawn in its path. However, to maintain a favorable path for the Shield to follow, you have a small opening to return to Anubis’ side, dashing under him while short-hopping over the Shield. If done correctly, the Shield will strike Anubis just as his invincibility wears off. When this happens, he’ll once again float away to the opposite side, and this is where the trickiest maneuver comes into play. You have to dash and jump exactly where Anubis will be before he gets there. Because the Shield is so high up relative to Zero’s position, it’ll take a very sharp downward angle toward him. This direction of travel reduces its horizontal speed, giving you just enough leeway to jump over it and establish a new orbit at the other end of the arena.
The next pillar phase begins as soon as Anubis is hit a second time, and this time, it’s exponentially more demanding than the first. As far as I can tell, it doesn’t matter how many waves of pillars you get here; when the wide ones show up, attempting to jump over them normally will result in Zero collecting the Shield. The solution is to modulate a small, extremely specific wall jump to get Zero’s height as close to the pillar’s spikes as possible. Wall jumping away from this height will barely provide enough space to clear the incoming pillar while keeping the Shield alive. The problem here is that this puts you further away from Anubis’ eventual return spot than you’d like, making it even more precise to repeat the movements from the previous attacking phase. It’s necessary, though, so getting used to the timing is your only option. It’s for this reason that you hope to get more than 2 waves during the first pillar phase; if you don’t, you’ll have to pull this stunt 3 times instead of 2.
The remaining attacking and pillar phases are repeats of the tougher variants already described. It’s certainly not easy, and I wouldn’t dare suggest that it’s consistent, but this is a satisfying win to pull off.
    Thanks for watching!

Congratulations, you just made the entire Megaman community feel very bad at these games!

If it's any consolation, attempting most of the ideas that I have to create videos from makes me feel pretty bad at the games too. Some of them can take a really long while to get just right.

I beat Anubis with something that looks like an oddly sharp flying pizza.

Haha I knew you'd comment something like this. I swear it's not intentional; this idea was next on my to-do list just as you posted your no weapon button win against Phoenix.

To me, Anubis looks like a boss who should've just been neutral. However, if he was, then this challenge would either be much harder or impossible, so I'll be grateful and not think too much about it.

@@DZ-Three i disagree and inquire you to think about it. let's say he was a fire elemental as an high ranking neo arcadain stranded in the desert needs to be, then you would solicit the lightning chip, making the challange equally as possible as before. wouldn't it bring alot more logic into this very logical game? or would you rather continue believing neo arcadia holds no strategic competence if they choose to throw such high ranking officer into an area that does not favor his chip?
