- An update on the rumor that George Lucas may be entitled to residuals from some of the original and prequel Star Wars characters I reported on a few days ago. As well as providing more evidence that apathy has set in with the franchise.

Lucas didn't create those either, workmen in Britain created them, even though he held the rights. Even C3PO which is credited to George's vision is just a direct rip off of the 1930s movie Metropolis.

BTW, I am not having a go at Lucas for this, he still created good films, even if inspired by others and relied a lot on others' visions for characters.
Just like Red Letter Media has said in the past, George gets far too much credit for "Creating," Star Wars.
He, at least, admits it though.

Disney: But we want to use this platform to push identity politics and all of our other agendas! We don’t care for the longtime fans, but we’re not going to admit that we need their $$!

The Other Point Of View
I, as a 51 yr old S/W mega fan, loved the prequels. They added to the history of the Skywalker saga.
The sequels just left me empty and with more questions. I don't think any of can really comment until we have seen the last part of the trilogy... even if the 2 films so far didn't really have anything to do with each other... just the same faces.
I'm so excited for Rise of Skywalker: I'll be spending hours watching reviewers rip it apart.

If you goto a fancy Restaurant (STAR WARS) expecting a longtime favorite dish (STAR WARS LORE & CHARACTERS), but they changed the owner (DISNEY) who is also the CHEF. This Chef doesn't know how to make that dish so he serves you DOG FOOD (Political AGENDA) straight out the can instead.
Now if we all no longer go to the restaurant, the Restaurant will be forced to make improvements to their menu or fold. If you instead order the DOG FOOD to go (DVD). The restaurant stays in business and continues to feed us DOG FOOD because it is still making money. That is what you are doing by continuing to support this trash.

Still dozens of fantastic books. The second they said the expanded universe wasn't cannon, I hopped off that train.
Same, went into TFA with zero expectations and was still pissed beyond belief, they took multiple plot points from the books and changed them enough to pass it off as their own crappy version aiming at nostalgia, dont think i was so annoyed sitting through a movie in a theater before that.

Absolutely! , they were GIVEN all the scripting and characters they would ever need for years of filming, but chose to make these horrible films. I went to TFA open to Disney making something great. I left so aggravated. I refuse to even watch TLJ.
This was another reason why they axed the EU...to avoid paying licence fee to the authors.
This was a huge tragedy. I got so much enjoyment from the EU over the years. Also there are so many parallels between the EU and the new series, albeit very poorly done, like Han and Leia's kid becoming evil. Disney pretends it's not so but the seeds are there. They should have just used the Young Jedi Knights as an outline for the new films but they're so greedy it's incredible and ruined Star Wars.
EU was fanfiction to Lucas.

@@achaudhari101 Yes and No. George Lucas did not read any of the novels and thought that wasn't his world, but he borrowed terms like Coruscant and characters like Aayla Secura, also the return of the Emperor in Dark Empire was his idea. Not to mention, the EU kept Star Wars alive in the 90s which incluenced Lucas decision to make the prequels.
If Lucas made the sequels, they would have invalidated parts of the EU post-RotJ, but they wouldn't have been disrespectful to the franchise and Luke wouldn't have been a failure, but a wise Jedi master (Lucas is very pro-Jedi).

I named my daughter Lia in 2005 as she was born when Star Wars Ep. III was out _(the missus wasn't having Leia)_ but that was why she was named that.
Now, over a decade later, I have nothing but apathy towards Star Wars, I don't wish it to burn but I am no longer interested in what they are doing with it. Such a waste of potential.

I think the problem was they assumed the Brand(tm) was above all and not the characters. We fell in love with Han, Luke and Leia which in turn caused us to fall in love with the Brand(tm). By disrespecting the characters (especially Luke) that caused us to fall OUT of love with the Brand(tm).
They thought the Brand(tm) would overcome all. . . and that didn't happen.
This reminds me of the democratic party conference when they found out that Donald Trump was about to win as the votes were being tallied. There were women crying and holding each other trying to console one another, and they had this look of shock and confusion on their faces.

Assuming the license deal is true as stated in the rumors (sounds plausible to me), it would have been so easy for Disney to just cut the old storyline off as it is, do a time jump (which they did) and start a completly fresh narrative.
What we know. We have eaten that up ,if we assume an at least decent story, but somehow Disney was either not confident enough in their storytelling ability, or just plain greedy in wanting to do another Kimba the White Lion stunt.
I assume it was a combination of both. What Disney didn´t know, and still don´t understand. We old fans are not only fans of the Skywalker story, but the SW setting itself. It would be have been enough.

"the theatrical runs alone made 4.8 billion in total" it cost money to make the movies, it cost money to advertise, and the money made is only about say 50% (though it starts off high but progressively gets lower as time passes) because the theaters that play the movie get a cut from the sales ... and as i said before and as has been made pretty clear, the merchandise sales are going down, the blu ray sales for the last jedi are well below expectations, over 50% less than force awakens but people still say its a success, a drop of half is not a win in my book and its exponential ... check this out, this was a year ago, in the first week TFA blu ray sales made 3.5 million, 17 weeks after first release the last jedi blu ray sales made 3.01 million, after 17 WEEKS it still didnt reach the force awakens in sales ... im not trying to insult you since you didn't say anything bad to me unlike kenneth but the numbers dont lie, dont just pay attention to the money made, subtract all the losses as well and you will see that they have not made back their investment

Compared to the new Star Wars films, the originals were a masterpiece, and the prequels were good. The new ones are just bad. Bad story telling, characters who you don't care about, don't care whether they live or die because they're boring 2 dimensional cardboard cutouts with zero personality who seem to do things 'because'.
The original trilogy showcased strong male leads and a strong female lead, who had great personalities, weren't perfect, often made mistakes and could have fun too. They reacted to situations, it didn't always go their way, but they got up, brushed themselves off and carried on. The prequels were a great idea but since the end goal was to show how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader and the birth of Luke and Leia, it seemed overly long, yet rushed at the same time (long being all the talking in committee stuff), yet character development was rushed (for example Anakin going from Jedi Knight to child murderer in a matter of minutes). Yet even these characters felt real compared to the ones in the new films, the majority of whom I can't even remember their names because they were just grey men and women whom I didn't care about.
It's not about making things politically correct. If you write good male and female characters, give them a good story line and make the audience care about them, it won't matter who you have as your leading characters (all male, all female a mixture of both). Just make them real people who react to situations like real people would. The audience has to care about whether they live or die, not get to the point where one of them dies and all the audience feels is relief and wonders when this nightmare of a film will end.
Disney, sell it back to George. Erase the last few films from history (they were bad), and let George tell Star Wars the way it should be.
Nothing will ever make the prequels good.
I'm still convinced the poor sales and being forced to take on excess stock of Star Wars merch is what really killed off Toys R Us.

Was asked by a friend if I was watching episode 9, I laughed and said it ain't happening. I've boycotted Disney and refused to give them any money knowingly and have gone out of my way to share this with my friends.
Even the wargaming folks and rpg players have steered clear of their products and the content from fantasy flight has sat on my local shops walls and has received very little in the way of sales
What I am most sad about is, in my life time I will never see my favorite characters have complete arcs that were resolved by loving fans, writers and directors, and therefore I will never have new characters to root for or get invested in. The Star Wars universe is dead and has been for a long time. Han and Leia should have lived happily ever after...not dying back at the same starting point they were at 40 years ago. Luke should have married Mara Jade, had a kid or two and been the Jedi Master of the New Jedi Order. They should have rode off into the sunset and handed the legacy/franchise over to the new characters, leaving the universe open for the next 50 years to build and expand and give us movies, characters, and merchandise to enjoy. As safe as The Force Awakens was, it did try to give us a launching point to reset the Star Wars Universe. Ryan Johnson killed it all.
They took their eye off the ball. Basic storytelling, escapism, traditional values, treating characters and fans with respect, instead of treating everything like it all has a price tag attached to it.
Remember at the end of A new Hope when victorious Luke lands his X-wing and Leia rips him a new one for losing all those X and Y wing fighters ? Instead of a medal she called him a stupid flyboy who couldn't follow orders? What a classic moment that was.
Disney executive: "I've greenlit your Scooby Doo movie JJ, but you can't use Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy or Scooby. You can use the Mystery Machine, but it has to be brown. You can use Scrappy though."

Are we talking the show or the comic or the novel (which I haven't read yet). The show and the manga don't follow the same story arch, the show ends with the big fight but that happens very early in the manga. Who would play the priestess? she is only 15 in the story and there is the whole resurrection part of the story to cover.

But I think this is the best explanation of the situation, especially how JJ and Rian were told to downplay the original characters. However, if the Disney plan was to avoid characters and iconography of Star Wars, then why did use so much of it in Rogue One?
Removing that iconography and characters would've been WAAAAY too noticeable as an attempt at a deliberate reboot in Rogue One since it takes place in an era where all of those things needed to be present. Plus it was following Ep7's shallow nostalgia fest, and was before Ep8's"kill it if you have to" massacre.

I've also been wondering why we haven't seen familiar aliens in the new canon (Rebels not included). No Twi'leks, no Zabraks, no Rodians, no Hutts, all of which are supposedly "common" aliens as shown previously. Maybe they're part of the OT/PT licensing, too?
