  • The free rig is a little known fishing technique that has many similarities to fishing and unpegged Texas rig. However, as we see in today’s video, our underwater footage gives the viewer subtle differences that in some situations may call for this presentation and in others may cause you to stick with the Texas rig.

I never thought about it until I saw your footage, but it looks like your bait is chasing their food (sinker). Which may get the bass into a competitive mode and commit. Thanks for doing this!

Yeah! That’s what I was thinking when I was talking about those little movements the bait makes towards the weight. Thanks for your comment.

Great video. I will definitely be using the free rig more in finesse applications with floating baits. I liked how the worm rose up off the bottom when you have it some slack. This will really help when fishing for finicky fish in light currents

I like the free weight action on a creature bait

Yeah it does seem like there are certain baits that would fit this presentation better than others.

I’m definitely going to put it to work. And the weight you’re using for a free rig is what I was using this past fall. You should try a free rig with a wicky rig. It looks killer!

I’m definitely going to try a wacky rigged floating worm on the free right now set up!

This was a great video on explaining the differences between the two was wondering if you could explain why a right-handed reel is for a right-handed person isn't the gearing system setup for the weaker hand that's why one turn equals 8 spins I kind of compare it to a nail and a hammer you don't use your strong hand to hold the nail and your weekend to swing the hammer because the right-handed real you're using your weekhand to fight the fish with the rod and your strong hand to spin the wheel that was designed for the weekhand

Yeah it’s definitely going to be a trick I pull out if I have a stubborn fish on a bed. Thanks brother!

The only time I fished a free rig I used a Strike King Zee Too which is an elaztech fluke but in general I agree with your findings that free rig and elaztech baits are good partners. Other than that I will fish a drop shot.

I tried the free rig last season, but had too much trouble with bite detection and hook sets. Went back to unpegged Texas rig.

I can see that being an issue. Were you using finesse gear?

The only benefit to a free rig is maybe the bass doesn’t get weight in mouth when it strikes

Yea I don’t think a weight flopping around on the line is such a good thing either.

Idunno, man... Where I'm at, the tungsten bullet weights are a couple of bucks a piece, where as one of those eyelet sinkers costs maybe 50-70 cents. If I'm not bringing it in through grass or timber, I know which one I'm picking, if there's virtually no difference in action anyway.

Do people really bounce texas rigs that far up in the water column? Seems like that would take a significant jerk of the rod by the fisherman?

Remember, the footage you’re watching is in the shallow end of the pool for the most part. This means that when you see the bait coming all the way to the surface it’s really just coming up 3-4 ft. That’s equal to moving your rod from the 4:00 o’clock position up to 12:00 o’clock. Not huge but that is what’s necessary to get that separation between the weight and your bait.

Cool footage! I did see a little bit more separation, like 6” with higher drag baits like the Pit Boss and Brush Hog with the Free Rig. But is it really a difference maker? Supposedly the Free Rig weight will drop where you cast where a bullet weight will pendulum more.
I have caught a spawner the way you have described. I think I used a Kicker Fish HoleShot high float worm and just shook it in place. The rig idea Ike gave me was : bobber stop, bead, free rig weight, another bead then hook. You could move the bobber stop to the max distance you want between your weight and hook/bait.

Thanks man. I’m really interested in the ideas you shared. I’m hoping we get more ideas from other viewers as well. Thanks again.

I use the free rig in current with alot of success. I also find it more of a finesse presentation with lighter weights paired with beaver style baits that increase separation from the weight. I almost always use lighter weights and spinning rods for free rigs and baitcasters for Texas rigs. … thanks for the underwater footage.

I really appreciate your telling us about your experiences. Your use of the rig in current confirms my thoughts about that being one of the three situations this rig would shine.

The free rig is designed to catch suspend Bass in 8 to 30 feet water. The plastic is will have move slower and .has better movement. Your pool test doesn't show its true potential.
