Paul Kelly just transcends genres. And the great thing about this song, even though it could be mistaken for a sad country song, is that it's not your typical tragedy, it's hopeful. The protagonist falls, but he puts the work in to better himself, and his wife sees the changes he has made and gives their love another chance.

And he has the self awareness to know that success isn't guaranteed. He wonders if he can even 'paint a picture and get them all to fit'.
Paul Kelly is the master of real talk.

What your subscribers are giving you is the kind of music, in all it's variety, that we all grew up listening to on the radio. Your hearing of very different music, is giving you a rounded out musical education, so you are coming to appreciate the artistry of people you would not have liked, had you never been open to trying new things. From my perspective, in differing moods, different music helps us to cope, or gets us stirred up to help us enjoy our lives more, it can make chores less of a burden, or get us dancing, each has it's place, and it is sad that the radio stations don't usually give such variety today. Isn't life more fun, as we get to know different styles of songs to suit our different mindsets. If everything sounded the same, no matter how well done, we could get bored with it. Music makes people feel good.

Yes, too many radio stations stay in a lane and never branch out. As a Baby Boomer I grew up with everything from Big Bands, Jazz and Classical to Prog Rock, Head Bangers and plain old Rock. Like folk but only certain Country songs. Never quite cottoned on to Rap, but did like M&M and co. in 8 Mile. I still do housework to very loud Mozart.........guess I'll just stay weird. 😄

A great storyteller, speaks clearly and has that timbre to his voice that makes you want to listen carefully without demanding it. This story is also interesting that you are left wanting more, it stops before the happy or sad reunion so the song lets you come to your own conclusion.

'He took it it pretty badly...she took both the kids." His lyricism gives me goosebumps. I love the way he plays around with words and strings them together in such clever ways. He says such simple things but in a way that makes people hear them in a profound way. I loved this reaction.

I love Paul's references to iconic Melbourne spots, but that's a weird one...cos there's another lyric 'riding through the cane' so unless he's travelling north to south, there's no cane around Melbourne. I always assumed his family was in QLD cos of the cane but I could be wrong. I hope he does more Melb refence songs so we can educate him about St Kilda esplanade and the Northcote hill and MCG in 'Leaps and Bounds' ;D

You can’t explain why you love this song because it’s just the magic of PKs storytelling. The master storyteller. His brilliance is his unique ability to write from so many broken, sad, lonely, scared, comical, hopeful etc perspectives of imagined characters and they FEEL real in your heart - you can see them and see the story as he sings it. One of the most haunting examples is ‘Everything’s Turning to White’ - written from the perspective of a woman who has discovered something awful about her man. Unbelievably done - who knows how he does it.

    They got married early
    Never had no money
Then when he got laid off
    They really hit the skids
    He started up his drinkin'
    Then they started fightin'
    He took it pretty badly
    She took both the kid's
She said "I'm not standing by
    To watch you slowly die
    So watch me walkin'"
    "Out the door"
    "Out the door"
    "Out the door"
She said, "Shove it Jack, I'm walking out your fuckin' door"
    She went to her brother's
    Got a little bar work
    He went to the buttery
    He stayed about a year
    Then he wrote a letter
He said, "I wanna see ya"
    She thought he sounded better
She sent him up the fare
He was riding through the cane
    In the pouring rain
    On Olympic
    To her door
    To her door
    To her door
    To her door
And his heart was singing like a lowdown guitar
He came in on a Sunday
    Every muscle achin'
    Walking in slow motion
    Like he'd just been hit
    Did they have a future?
    Would he know his children?
    Could he make a picture
And get them all to fit?
He was shaking in his seat
    Riding through the streets
    In a Silvertop
    To her...
    Shaking in his seat
    Riding through the streets
    In a Silvertop
    To her door
    To her door

I love Paul Kelly's economic use of words. He uses one word where other might use three. His lyrics are straight to the point, yet multi-layered. He is indeed a lyrical Genius, and live he is amazing.

Oh man, watching a few of your PK reactions and Missy Higgins reactions... I would LOVE to see you react to Missy's live cover of If I Could Start Today Again. The beauty of her voice with his songwriting is pure magic.

There thing I love about Paul Kelly is that he can say so much with so few words. In one short verse there he perfectly describes a relationship starting, then the difficulty of life driving someone to drink, and the eventual breakup of a marriage. And he is still able to provide some context about how they love each other and the pain they feel. He's such an incredible writer
