  • El Chorrillo is a district of Panama, located in the urban center of Panama City. It was founded on April 29, 1915, together with the neighboring villages of San Felipe, Santa Ana and Calidonia.
This neighborhood owes its name to a water spring that was born on the slopes of Cerro Ancón, popularly known as El Chorro. It was originally populated by foreigners who arrived in the country attracted by the construction of the Panama Canal.
Many of its first settlers were of Antillean origin, which is why it is still common to find, on its corners, the improvised sale of fried fish and other Antillean-style foods. As a consequence of the 1989 US invasion, most of the houses in this neighborhood were destroyed, after the troops of the United States Southern Command invaded the old Central Headquarters of the Defense Forces of Panama, located in these areas. The old neighborhood disappeared to make way for the existing new buildings.
This is one of the sectors of the city recognized for a large number of social problems, led by violence, caused mostly by gangs. However, its people live a passion for sports, such as soccer. It is the only corregimiento in the district of Panama that has two teams in the first division of the Panamanian Soccer League, such as CD Plaza Amador and Chorrillo FC.
Outstanding neighbors of El Chorrillo are or have been the poet Héctor M. Collado, Olga Cárdenas, Hector Brands, the boxer Roberto Durán and the soccer player Rommel Fernández.

I dunno - people had their car trunks open and they weren’t nearby and women were walking alone on the street - just cuz a neighborhood is poor doesn’t make it automatically dangerous….

As someone who is from the US I am extremely sad that my country attacked this neighborhood and caused so much pain and suffering. I discovered this only because I have stayed one night here at the border of Santa Ana and El Chorillo. We were not taught the real history of things in school. I would say though that the people that are most in danger are those living on the streets and in poverty they are the ones that are constantly at risk more than anyone else. It breaks my heart that my country contributed significantly to the destruction of the community of El Chorillo. This is a very significant area of the culture and history of Panama city. I hope that this community gets support to become an environment that is healthy for the people there to thrive and is not just eventually more gentrified so they are pushed out again

December 19, 1989. And by the way, thank you for giving us an amazing Merry Christmas Present. I will never forget all the dead people, the crushed cars with people in it, the blood spreads on the streets and the destruction of burned out peoples houses and peoples jobs.

I lived 10+ years in San Felipe. Whenever I'd walk a couple blocks past the park into Chorrillo there was always, always day and night policia on the corner stopping everyone and asking why you going here? If you did not have a specific reason to be there they'd turn your ass around pronto. Old lady there did killer street BBQ on weekends and a little China always had fresh tamales. I never had a prob with anyone
