To explain what delamination in a pickleball paddle is for anyone who doesn’t know it’s when the carbon fiber face becomes detached from the car underneath. This makes the ball hit the face and then the face to deflect much further because it’s not supported by the core as much. Then the face contacts the core a split second later which forces the face back like a trampoline. This basically lets the paddle act almost like a tennis racket with more more give than a paddle should.
Bottom line, we need only one pickleball association, and, regardless of rules, they should be checking paddles at all tournaments. Various paddles will not meet the rules. All other sports check for legality; baseball, golf, etc. Work on calling illegal serves. Rules need to be enforced and start imposing fines, either money and or suspension(s).
A solution to the questioning of an illegal paddle is to implement the Claim Rule. Any player may claim his opponent's paddle for a claim fee such as $500 paid to the owner of the paddle. The claimant will then own that paddle. He then turns it over to the PPA for testing. If it's LEGAL the paddle and claiming fee goes to the original owner of the paddle. If it's ILLEGAL then the claimant keeps the paddle and the claim fee is returned to him. The user of the illegal paddle then forfeits all points and prize money earned in the tournament. +++ History: The Claim Rule has been used in AMA motocross where the winning bike could be claimed for $10,000 and then tested for weight and engine displacement. Since factory riders had bikes most of which had $40k invested in them, the factories has great incentive to play by the rules or risk losing the very expensive factory bike for $10k.
If Pardoe is going to invest 100K in testing then please invest 80K in Hawkeye so these ridiculous camera angles for challenges are history. One angle looks out one looks in. If a pro is overriden by the crazy challenge they are vilified as cheaters. Hawkeys eliminates all Line calls The system makes all line calls live over speaker system and Ref can just worry about kitchen calls.
Pickleball needs to go to the same place as tennis rackets. Only spaghetti strings are banned. Until this is settled with an end to the drama pickleball cannot advance.
This is to funny, you want to talk illegal paddles than talk about the huge hole in the Selkirk paddles. This is a blantent violation of the established rules and yet it gets glazed over. Delamination can occur for a number of reasons from the Manufacturing process to how the player cares for their paddle. A simple tap test will indicate a delam. To say companies are deliberately do this is a stretch for sure. I would love to see the number all this power and the use of a high speed camera to show what is actually happening at impact. Now that would be interesting. 😊
That is what all these companies did. The result was a paddle that wasn’t play tested enough. The result will be increasing the price of these paddles to account for warranty claims and the extra steps in manufacturing.
Of course they could save money by stating user error as the reason for delaminating. It’s the customers that were cheating by hitting a lacrosse ball just to get more power.
This is an all-out assault on Carbon. Interesting to know who is behind this. Pickleball's supposed to be such a friendly sport. Dog eat dog and dink eat dink. Ben needs to be careful getting caught up in this. It's looking pretty evident of what's going on. Weak as hell. King Ben needs to just play and not try to passive aggressively post unverified information because he doesn't want to lose. Ben looking SCARED AND DESPERATE. Smh.
@@Blazervitch exactly. That's the point. Ben should keep his nose out of this and simply play. He is a player and regardless of his level he is not in the governing body of pickleball and should not be inserting disinformation. The only reason he's doing this is to insulate himself when he does lose so he can have his opponents paddles disqualified or checked or put a question mark on the win. Ben sees what competition is coming and he's getting scared.
@@Blazervitch and considering these players are sponsored by paddle companies should be more of a reason that they need to keep their mouth shut so it doesn't look like a conflict of interest or suspicious. Ben is going to get in over his head.
You are incorrect, and quite opinionated. The truth is that Ben is on the court feeling and seeing the difference in these paddles. Prob has even hit with them himself. Do you remember that pro who laughed at how good his delaminated paddle is? He know it was cheap. He’s playing events where they don’t even test the paddles. The conversation is valid and the more open and fluid the quicker we will all arrive at a solution. It’s not an attack on CRBN. It’s on 6, Legacy and CRBN. And these people were just trying to innovate. If Joola tanks advantage of it, so be it…but that’s not the foundation of Ben’s comments. He’s a chill dude. He’s just pissed at the pop.
if paddles didn't make a difference, Ben Johns would still be hitting Franklins.....the world is gaining on him and he is looking for any angle to chop them down...I like him as a player but you don't knock their equipment and basically accuse them of cheating
I must not be understanding the meaning of the word "de-laminate." Simply speaking, paddles are constructed of layers bonded together by glue. When the glue fails the layers come apart or de-laminate. The paddle is broken. How is it possible that a broken paddle which has come apart is producing more power?
I hit with one last night. He explains it in the video, but basically it pops even more because there's a trampoline effect between the layers. It's very noticeable when you hit with one that's delaminated vs one that isn't. You can identify when they've become delaminated because it makes a crunchy cracking sound when you squeeze it.
fantastic vid -- i need more of this haha!! thanks so much for the recap

Here's a solution everyone uses the same paddle. No more blaming the paddle on giving unfair advantage.
Your videos are so good! Keep it up
Great concise pod. No fluff or jokes.

Ben acting like he aint using a joola branded legacy pro lol
Exactly. Ben needs to be careful he's going to step in some real dog doo doo

Next, they will test for tackiness level of your grip.
Lower the price of paddles, it is a big rip off by most companies.

Agree, it wouldn’t shock me at all if Joola was behind this assault. And the new Joola paddle is made in the same Chinese factory as Legacy. 🤔
He literally hasn’t lost to these paddles

i think it's good to be somewhat vague on what procedures they'll use.
like a more powerful paddle is a good thing. I have a crbn2x and do not want more power or every ball will be out
Pickleball will stay at the level as sports like the AVP Volleyball, Miner league Hockey.

Ben Johns is a "Cheater" and full of himself.
i love pickleball but pickleball will not compete with the major sports (bsball, bball, football, golf, tennis) in viewership
it won't...pickleball is ok to watch but after a while people will become bored...it is much better playing than watching
I get more bored watching baseball than I do watching pro pickleball.
Baseball is literally the most boring sport to watch
