"Free Bird," the iconic anthem by Lynyrd Skynyrd, was released in 1973 and quickly became a defining track of Southern rock. Known for its extended guitar solos and heartfelt lyrics, the song has remained a staple in classic rock. The performance at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 stands out as one of the most memorable renditions of "Free Bird." During this show, the band delivered a powerful and extended version that showcased their unparalleled musicianship. The concert, part of the band's tour promoting their album "Street Survivors," was marked by a spectacular display of guitar prowess, particularly in the song's extended solo section, which became a defining moment of their live performances. This rendition captured the raw energy and intensity of Lynyrd Skynyrd at the height of their career, solidifying their reputation as one of the foremost rock bands of their time.

I was there on July 2, 1977, at the Oakland Colliusm. Those concerts were called "Day on the Green". Only paid around $13 dollars. I was 17 years old and rocking out with my friends. I'll never forget it. Most people in that crowd are grandparents and great-grandparents now. Those were good times.

UGH - SO ENVIOUS!!! I am about the same age - but, didn't get to see Skynyrd... :( I DO remember when ticket prices were "a little high" to us, then...but, nowhere NEAR what they are now - you'd have to take a loan out at the BANK, now, to go to one....and, probably have to GO BY YOURSELF!! It's a real drag. Was wanting to go see The Stones, one last time (seen them several) - but, the cheapest tickets were, like $300....I'm like: $600 for two people JUST TO GO?? Sorry - can't see it. LOVE THIS VIDEO, THO - TREASURE IT!!! WE WERE SO LUCKY!!! HUGS to ALL!!

The scene in the movie Almost Famous where the guy stands on the roof and yells,”I am a golden god!” was based on the guitarist in white, Alan Collins. Some people say Robert Plant but in my hometown of Cleveland, MS, Lynyrd Skynyrd came to play and stayed four days to just party with local fans. Alan Collins stood on a roof and yelled it right before he jumped in the pool. He had such a tragic life. In addition to the plane crash and losing his bandmates and suffering great injury to himself, he also lost his wife in childbirth. Then he was driving on drugs and drunk and crashed his car killing his girlfriend and leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. To avoid jail time, he would be rolled out in front of concerts to say don’t do drugs. So incredibly talented and so tragic.

That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! This song was a show finale and was always over the top! Yeah understandable but back in the 70's it wasn't the "dog whistle" that it is today.
They were expressing love for their southern roots but not allegiance to the days of slavery.
That was true of the other southern rock bands too.
"Through the years, people like the KKK and skinheads kinda kidnapped the Dixie or Southern flag from its tradition and the heritage of the soldiers, that’s what it was about,” Rossington said. “We didn’t want that to go to our fans or show the image like we agreed with any of the race stuff or any of the bad things.”
That was a comment from 2012 when they decided to stop using the Confederate flag as stage decoration.
Apparently, lots of racist southerners had a problem with that statement.
      F 'em.

I live just south of Capricorn Records in Macon, GA, the birthplace of southern rock, where bands like the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band and many more recorded their albums. Please checkout the amazing Wet Willie with Jimmy Hall. He could really blow-singing and sax playing. The blend of R&B, blues and soul with southern rock made them unique in the genre. “Grits Ain’t Groceries” and “Keep On Smiling” are a great place to start. I think you’ll really like it. 🤟🏼
