Kids, that's your Meemaw sitting on your Papaw's shoulders and rocking out. Oh yes children, you're grandparents could party. One of the greatest music eras ever!
I will be 65 in February and I 'm proud to have grown up with American Rock classics and long hair.We were against the Establishment but, we didn't hurt anyone and we grew as people who wish to different but love America and rock 'n'roll.
R.I.P TO ALL OF THOSE WHO LOST THERYE LIVES 3 MONTHS AFTER THIS CONCERT. I WAS ONLY 11 BUT FELT THE IMPACT CAUSE I LOVED RVS AND LS.😢😢😢 WE STILL REMEMBER RONNIE WHE THE YOUNG ONES LISTEN TO THEM😢😢
Yes, those gals are probably like me now, Grannies and Great Aunties! ❤ This was my era. My Hometown Boys here from Jacksonville, FL. We are very proud and honored to have had them in our lives.
All peace & love. No one getting trampled to death. No cell phones. Just pure music. Concerts back then were awesome. I've been to countless shows. ✌️🌻🌻
Remember, there was no auto-tune or technical equipment to make the band cohesive. That's why the slide guitarist stood so close while Ronnie was singing
I JUST TURNED 71 , I WAS AT THIS CONCERT ! IT WAS 1977 , I WAS JUST 14 YEARS OLD ! THERE WAS 50,000 STRONG OF US ! IT WAS AMAZING ! AND ON TOP OF THAT , PETER FRAMPTON WAS NEXT !
Couple things. This was 1977 and technology not like today.. so for back then That was awesome as far as clarity of Ronnie’s voice and sadly he died later that year with 2 other band members in a plane crash. Love this band!
The piano was not in the original song. The piano player was a roadie (setting up equipment for their concerts), but was also a classically trained piano player. One day during a practice he added the piano on a couple of songs and they made him a band member.
The things you point out is why they were so popular, the music and lyrics you could understand. They were really hot back in the day. You guys missed those days, but us old guys can tell you all about them!
That's what it was like back in the day, when concerts were on all the time. I went to over 100. There were lots of good bands, and they all toured. Not like today.
Nothing like three guitarists coming to the front of the stage and playing their hearts out. So glad to have been able to see them perform live way back when. Good times.
I wonder how many have passed on. Only Artimus Pyle the drummer and Leslie Hawkins, one of the Honkettes are still alive from this performance. The 3 female Back up singers (Honkettes) are not shown on this video - probably because they aren’t singing on this song.
I don't think most people understood how genius this song was. When the tempo changed radically it was as if the bird was set free from the cage of that incredible slowness. Free Bird.
Strange world huh. Here am I, a 65 year old Muslim guy, watching a couple of young Christians finding out for the first time, about bands I grew up listening to.
All those young faces you see in the crowd are now close to 70 years old. My...how time flies by. This was probably the last known instance of the confederate flag being flown in Oakland, Ca. A very different time. I've always believed that the long instrumental that ends the song is the sound of the bird finally flying free. Or more specifically - his spirit.
Brings back sweet memories! My husband and I loved Lynard Skynard….raw talent! We are all in our 60’s now….your grandmas and grandpas were way too cool! This was back when America felt free! If you have a chance, watch biographies on this group!
Lynyrd Skynyrd first formed as a high school band in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, the original lineup consisting of Ronnie Van Zant (singer), Gary Rossington and Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Jungstrom (bass), and Bob Burns (drums). The name of the band was inspired by Leonard Skinner, a high school PE teacher they were not that fond of, interestingly enough Mr. Skinner himself was tickled pink when he found that out. The band got national attention around 71, going through a number of lineup changes, and was on the verge of true greatness in 77 when tragedy struck and the band was involved in a terrible plane crash that took the lives of Ronnie, guitarist Steve Gaines, and his sister backup singer Cassie Gaines. The band reunited in 87 with Ronnie's brother Johnny Van Zant taking over as singer, and continue to this day. Sadly only one member of the lineup at this concert is still alive, drummer Artemis Pyle, and all the original members have passed away.
Great reaction guys! This performance always gets me knowing the plane crash incident happened not long after this show. ty guys for sharing your reaction with us. Much love from Richmond Va ☘️🇺🇲
I was at this concert back in 1977, Day on the green . I was only 16. What a memory. I watch these reaction videos to see folks who probably wouldn't listen to this genre . Hopefully they enjoy it.
The story was a band member and his girlfriend had a huge fight. She walked outside and he followed. She asked him, "If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me?" They made up and got married. Then that question became the inspiration for this song. Great reaction.
“Simple Man” and “The Ballad of Curtis Lowe” are a couple you should listen to. I feel sorry for all those girls sporting first class sunburns out there in the crowd. Also, they weren’t even the headliners for this concert. The main attraction was Peter Frampton.
The pianist was Billy Powell. He was a roadie for the band until they heard him playing. It was not long before he was a member of the band. Skynyrd has many good tunes from the 70s. Thanks for the reaction ✌️
I was lucky enough to see Skynyrd a few times in New Orleans before the plane crashed. On October 20 o was standing in line to get tickets to show the next night in Baton Rouge when it was announced that their plane had crashed. They stopped selling tickets and everyone had this dazed look and went straight to their cars and listened to the news on their radios. That was an UNBELIEVABLE band that lit up the stage EVERY time
I was a few years too young to go to this show, but I went to two of these "Day onn the Green concerts"in the 80s at the Oakland Coliseum. What a great time...General admission shows for les than $30. I got to see Yngwie Malmsteen, Y&T, the original Metallica, Ratt l, & The Scorpions for less than $30. What a time!
The correct story about Billy Powell ( as told by Gary Rossington ) is that : after a gig one night it was raining so bad they could not load out the equiptment. Billy saw a piano and said if I had to play Freebird this is how I would play it. He played the part as you hear it today. The band made him part time piano player part time roadie eventually moving him just to piano.
I’m 60, grew up in the arena concert era. It was fun but there were issues no doubt. Youth today have some things better and some things worse. Regardless, you just have to do the best with the cards you’re dealt.
Saw them in concert in the 70's, we were spoiled with awesome music. Sad ending for some, lost them in a plane crash months after this performance. I would suggest also listening to the studio version.
I wonder how many in that audience have passed away...I know almost all that band are gone....Im almost 70 now but was younger than probably all that were there...mixed emotions for me thinking about the great music and the people from this time that loved this music are disappearing daily
Thank you for doing my request! Greatly appreciated. I live in Jacksonville FL the home of Lynyrd Skynyrd and I use to work at a music store in the early 90’s that sold used gear and I got to meet Gary Rossington (Guitar), Billy Powell (Piano), and Artimus Pyle (Drummer). When they walked into the store I flipped out and my other coworkers were like what’s going ok?! Just my story.
Saw them twice, World series of Rock 8/15/76 and again Super Bowl of Rock 7/10/77. I am truly fortunate to have been a teenager and avid concert goer at that time. Good god we knew how to have a good time!
I saw them in 8/1975 Day on the green, Oakland coliseum, I was 20 at the, time 1977 was the last time they played there, growing up there, I was lucky to attend many venues in the bay area....
One helluva break-up song, eh? It's gentle and heartfelt in the first half, then you see what the 4 guitars do once the bird is set free! Love that you picked out the piano and its firm contribution to the song -- can hear it even through the loudest parts to the very end! The part I love best is when the bass player (Leon Wilkeson) cranks it up a notch and joins in near the end; plucks those thick bass strings so crisp-n-clean like they're regular guitar strings. All original members of LS have now passed on to the great stage in the sky (they all did not die in the plane crash that happened 3 months after this concert).
I was there! I am so happy this is on film because I don't remember a thing except that I loved going to these concerts at the Oakland Coliseum's Days on the Green. So many people and we all were just so chill listening to the music. And no, I smoked nothing, took nothing. But I was there!
The piano player was a part of the road crew until one day he sat down and started playing it on the piano after the show. And they over heard him. From then on he was part of the group.
This was the last concert I went to before entering U.S. Navy boot camp. A great day on the green in the East Bay Doesn't seem like 47 yrs. ago, that's depressing lol
I turn 69 tomorrow. I grew up with the absolute best music, the best bands, the coolest concerts. We still mourn these guys.
HB2U!
HBD!!
Happy Birthday!!!
Happy Birthday
Yessir.im 70..
We ROCK..
Simply one of the best rock songs ever and also one of the best rock perfomances of all time. Man, there was nothing like the 1970's
Kids, that's your Meemaw sitting on your Papaw's shoulders and rocking out. Oh yes children, you're grandparents could party. One of the greatest music eras ever!
For damn sure
I’m pushing 70, just for perspective, all of the young ladies in the crowd, if still living are likely over 70! We partied then and still do!
When you're so good and so tight as a band, you have to stomp your feet...... you're feeling it.
Iconic! Greatness along with tragedy but they left us with some amazing music that will last the test of time , shredding!!
How could the audience be having any fun? No cell phones, no internet. I Thank god I came of age in this era!
Yea right dude , and I never got a speeding ticket while FREEBIRD was on an FM radio 😎
Freebird is an American anthem for the ages
No phones. Everyone just immersed themselves in the experience. It was an amazing time.
No phones, full bushes, no worries and just a bunch of people having a good time.
love the pokies in the 70's
Remember live. No voice overs. All in one take. Pretty unbelievable.
Welcome to the greatest American band in history .. Enjoy the ride
Tickets would be around $12. General admission, no assign seats, no cell phones. No surveillance, no control.== freedom !
You forgot the flashing boobies !!! Integral part of every 60's and 70's concert.
You forgot the flashing boobies !!! Integral part of every 60's and 70's concert.
Perfect analogy I'm going to use this..... What is freedom? Puts on freebird live
Tickets for this show were $1 more because they were considered co headliners with Peter Frampton and Frampton had to follow this
I will be 65 in February and I 'm proud to have grown up with American Rock classics and long hair.We were against the Establishment but, we didn't hurt anyone and we grew as people who wish to different but love America and rock 'n'roll.

Yes, those gals are probably like me now, Grannies and Great Aunties! ❤ This was my era. My Hometown Boys here from Jacksonville, FL. We are very proud and honored to have had them in our lives.
Cassie died in the crash, Jojo billingsley passed 2010,and leslie hawkins in 2019. The only member still alive is artimus pyle.
That is southern rock at it's best. To Ronnie Van Vant, Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie Gaines, and Dean Kilpatrick died 10-20-1977. R.I.P.!
Musicians used to just make the guitar talk...
You can't go wrong with SKYNYRD
This is the ultimate "it's not you, it's me" song.
FIRE!!! PURE FIRE!!! Someone call 911! 😮 Not anyone around today with that !! Great stuff back in the day that stills holds up today!!😊❤❤
Im 70 have seen them 100 times. Always awsome.
Greatest rock band and greatest song ever!!!
One of the many great bands of the day. RIP Gary Rossington, who was the last original member of the band.
I JUST TURNED 71 , I WAS AT THIS CONCERT ! IT WAS 1977 , I WAS JUST 14 YEARS OLD ! THERE WAS 50,000 STRONG OF US ! IT WAS AMAZING ! AND ON TOP OF THAT , PETER FRAMPTON WAS NEXT !

I was 19, now I'm 66 and a grandmother, and still loving this. I was blessed to have lived when the greatest music and musicians of all time!
This is as legendary as a song gets. This performance is music history. It's a perfect live song. We still remember you Ronnie.
@10:16 The moment he realizes what he missed out on, and the moment she realizes she'd have no chance amongst them. Best era of music EVER!
Oh my...what a time to grow up...we had it so good and I cant help but the memories from flooding back to a better time...
Music was LIVE and crowds were IN the moment. It'll never be like that again.
The lead singer you weren’t vibing on is a musical genius rest in peace Ronnie Vanzant
4 freaking guitars, piano, drummer all going nuts.
Coolest breakup song ever. No computers, no autotune, no lasers, no pyrotechnics. Just pure freakin talent. Welcome to my generations music. Enjoy!!!
All those people that attended this concert back in (1977) forty-seven years ago are now grandparents.
Free bird should be the national anthem
It is my personal anthem since the 70s. 😊
you mean it's not?
It's it's the national anthem of the South
It's, like chocolate cake, never get enough 😂❤🎉
The things you point out is why they were so popular, the music and lyrics you could understand. They were really hot back in the day. You guys missed those days, but us old guys can tell you all about them!
We thought the production of great music, from Nashville to Motown, would NEVER end. It ended.
Amen to that
Skynard are Jacksonville Florida boys… my hometown, I live 1 min away from Tonnie Van Zandt childhood home. Westside of Jacksonville
Triple lead guitar attack. Bassists is going in. All those beautiful, young ladies are grandma’s now. Life was just better back then.
Skynyrd was such a tight band, one of my favorites. RIP to all members, and "play it pretty" in rcck n roll heavenl
God bless Lynyrd Skynyrd and Skynyrd nation
That's what it was like back in the day, when concerts were on all the time. I went to over 100. There were lots of good bands, and they all toured. Not like today.
Everyone could afford concerts then
@@Annejo2018 I agree. My first concert was in 77 and I paid 7 bucks for the ticket.
Billy Powell the pianist was a trained classical concert pianist before he started with the band. In fact he was also one of their roadies.
"Tuesdays Gone" by Lyynyrd Skyynyrd is another banger worth a reaction
Yes sir Ronnie we still remember you...
RIP to all the original members
I think they are all gone now. RIP to all.
I remember paying only $11 for tickets. Most of of us young ladies were there to see Peter Frampton but Lynyrd stole the show.
Nothing like three guitarists coming to the front of the stage and playing their hearts out. So glad to have been
able to see them perform live way back when. Good times.
How can someone NOT have heard Freebird?? C’mon.
Keep in mind that, all of those young people in the front rows are now in their 60s and 70s!
I bet the girls are still cuties. Of course, I am 70.
I resemble that remark......
@@samgamgee42I was just about to say that word for word. !!!!!!

Facts
When this song comes on the radio its CRANK it up as loud as you can!!!
Only 66 and get it. Was fantastic. Those younger peeps missed it.
Hard to believe any person could make it to adulthood without hearing this tune. I've been listening to it for almost 50 years.
I think they were opening for Peter Frampton, that's why there sooo many women. Another great musician.
All those young faces you see in the crowd are now close to 70 years old. My...how time flies by. This was probably the last known instance of the confederate flag being flown in Oakland, Ca. Dont let that be your only Skynryd song. MUst listens: Simple Man, Sweet Home Alabama, That smell" there are more but those three are must listens.
Rip to Ronnie Van zant & the band
I saw them at JFK stadium in Philly on June 11, 1977. Frampton was the headliner. It was a long hot day.

Billy was also a classically trained pianist. He didn’t tell the band because he thought he’d get fired.

You two look terribly young, and also terribly cute. Enjoy your baby when he or she arrives!
This was the song that they finished their show with so the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant voice was more than likely about tired
This was the 12th song in their set. So, they'd been on stage for a while by this time.
