I’ve been looking at this since it came out. It’s. My birthday next week. My husband usually won’t buy me stuff for the shop lol. But I showed him this and he is going to get it for me. So exciting.
I'm looking forward to receiving my Trace, I have a lot of ideas to put it to use. If it's as easy to use at it appears, it's going to get a lot of use in my shop !
I saw a video by crow creek designs, where they took several shots of an object that was too large for the frame and then merged it together in trace. Can you show how to do that?
Trace doesn't require black and white but you do want to make sure there's enough contrast to make a good capture. As Sean advised, tracing the shape out will likely get you the best capture, especially for inlay!
Sam, I haven’t seen you for awhile. Great instructional video. I can wait get get mine! It looks as if I’ll be able to break apart my projects and put them back together similar to intarsia; Am I right about that? Thanks
Finally, a shaper tutorial that is understandable without all your geek speak! Please re visit your Origin videos and make them understandable for the average Joe. 😊
@@waytospergtherebro congratulations. You must be so proud of yourself for saying this to a complete stranger. You think you’re special because you don’t have any learning disabilities? Shame on you. Shame.
Sam always does a great presentation. I wish he was presenting more often. October is quickly approaching. I have not seen this question but if I sell my Shaper products (heaven forbid) can Trace go to the new owner?
is it possible to set the Trace frame ontop of a light box for tracing 3d object? since that would eliminate shadows being cast and confusing trace when taking the picture?
This may work but you'd still run into the dimensionality problem. 3-D objects might distort the capture based on the angel relative to the frame. It'd be tricky to capture perfectly above the frame and object.
Trace produces an SVG file, which doesn't contain any 3-D information, but the file could be imported and extruded to create a file ready for a 3-D printer!
There's several ways to get an inside line using a Trace capture, but mostly if you want a single-line output an on-line capture will be very close to an inside line.
Morning I’ve used trace on several objects and have saved them to my shaper files. When I go to my files, it has an image in the corner of the file, not sure what that means, but I can’t open it?
At firs i think of costs, not everybody has a flatbed scanner, but all have smartphones. Then i saw the price, you can get a decent scanner for the same money and use it for other stuff (like OCR). I see no point if there are good free raster to vector programs with the same quality.
Where is the app? I tried the trace I got send this week and it tried to do it by browser. That is no app. And also the browser function did not work. I bought the double pack for me and a gift to someone but if it does not work it is useless to give away....
Hi Jeroen, Trace is a webapp you can access from most browsers on most devices. If you're having issues getting Trace up and running reach out to Support so we can iron out any issues! support@shapertools.com
@@Shapertools Why is the app so glitchy and slow when the way to small qr code finally scans? Isn't there a way to make a non browser app that works like it should?
to me the biggest flaw is using so much freaking paper. I wish you could just put the object in the center and it create it that way. Also when I trace my screw driver it looks like a middle finger since I am a disabled vet with nerve damage in the hands so my traces look horrible.
So, i just received mine, i tried tracing a part i need to import into a 3d printing program…am i correct?, if you don’t draw perfectly straight lines, all that imperfection is exactly copying into the vector. So good luck recreating an object unless you know how correct in adobe illustrator. Disappointed. Plus, doesn’t work without internet access…no app
Love the Shaper but it is expensive and out of reach for most people (me) who are not TH-cam influencers. I hate subscriptions. I'd rather pay for new features or modules.
Looking forward to Trace! Appreciate all of Shaper tools...
any plan for a larger version at some point? I realize I'm jumping ahead, but just curious.
Excellent video Sam - your enunciation & obvious technical skills shine. A pleasure listening to you!
Excellent intro! I cannot wait for my Trace to show up!

Great instructional video! Well done. Looking forward to receiving my Trace.
This is phenomenal. There is only one flaw, it needs to be four times ad big.
Nah it’s literally 100 dollars
@hugocarrasco7734 why can't we just 3d print this thing? Don't tell me a 3d printer can't make these perfectly aligned holes I know it can
@@AckzaTV your right. I for real have half the mind to make a duplicate app and make it for free

Sam - As always, a great instruction piece. Good to see you back on Shaper videos.
Nice! i am soooo excited getting mine. Surely kickstarter´d instantly 2 sets :3
Can it only scan black on white? For example, if I have a flat cut stone that I'd like to inlay into wood, could I scan it?
It would probably be a lot more accurate if you traced it on paper.
Trace doesn't require black and white but you do want to make sure there's enough contrast to make a good capture. As Sean advised, tracing the shape out will likely get you the best capture, especially for inlay!

Me too❤

Hi Brad,
There's no tool in Trace to tile a drawing together, but you could do this in a vector editor after you capture each part!

can you take multiple pictures of differnet objects and combine the vectors into one project?
You can download the captures as SVG files and combine them in Studio or other vector editor.
Can an actual object be put on frame to create a 3d svg file?
is it possible to set the Trace frame ontop of a light box for tracing 3d object? since that would eliminate shadows being cast and confusing trace when taking the picture?
This may work but you'd still run into the dimensionality problem. 3-D objects might distort the capture based on the angel relative to the frame. It'd be tricky to capture perfectly above the frame and object.
Looks great, will this app also be a standalone app or always a web app?
Likely always a web app so it's compatible for a variety of phones.
What is the advantage of using the frame?
The frame is required for the app :-) The frame/app are paired with each other, and there's no subscription fee.
Definitely late to the party. Just picked one up…any plans for an iPhone app?
We are keeping it browser-based at this time :)
Will the app pick up any object in the frame? Can i use a 3d object like a glock frame?
We recommend using a drawing/outline, but some folks have had some success with tracing a 3D object.
I heard I could use this for 3d printing? Is that true?
Trace produces an SVG file, which doesn't contain any 3-D information, but the file could be imported and extruded to create a file ready for a 3-D printer!
does it have to be traced out in pen? lets say you had a gasket you wanted to cut out can you just lay the gasket down and snap the picture?
You can use pen, pencil, printout, whatever you need! But it's recommended for the capture to be on flat paper and not a three dimensional object
why is there no inside line?
There's several ways to get an inside line using a Trace capture, but mostly if you want a single-line output an on-line capture will be very close to an inside line.

Please add dxf or someway to export to CAD. This is a non useable tool for programs like fusion.

The only Shaper product that has a subscription is Studio--all other products are one-time payments including Trace and AutoPass.
Found out that the Android Phone has to have an OS issued after 2018. So that was why my Galaxy S8+ will not work.
Bruh, why is this thing 100 dollars? Surely it can be cheaper.
No subscription, thought that we wanted that rather than a monthly fee of 5$.
