Imagine how much more formidable a champ would Marvin have been if he got his title shot much earlier in his career, which he deserved. If he was not stiffed for all those years, he may have been the longest standing champ, by a long shot, of all-time. Would have only enhanced his aura and historical positioning amongst the greats!
@@ellismarcelle321 He lost two fights in 1976, and Monzon retired in 1977. The promoters don’t put fights on that they don’t think will be profitable, and although one of those Hagler losses was questionable, they were still back to back losses, which is probably why he was never matched with Monzon. And seriously, if he had this much trouble with Vito, what do you think would have happened if a prime Monzon had been his opponent that night instead? Which is unfortunate. Hagler’s southpaw stance might have bothered Carlos for a few rounds but I think he would have adjusted.
This was still clearly Vitos best performance. To take Hagler to the distance and have a draw was great for Vito. Hagler definitely won this fight but the more I watch this fight the better Vito does for me. Total respect to Antuofermo. He did really well for the very little tools he had in his tool box.
Hey the guy had over 50 pro fights and won the most of them .. Not a easy thing to do I mean I was pretty good with my hands but never went pro .. how many times did you get in the ring??
All the ring announcers are here to comment on the guys who dedicated their lives to boxing .. Do you guys know its like a religion that you have to eat sleep and drink boxing 24 -7 365 .. man it's one of the hardest things to do.. truly and it's a shame that you would even critique the guys that got in the ring a fought their asses off .. trust me you are the ones who never boxed .. maybe carried the spit bucket and towels ... to say he has limited skills .. both guys class acts and true gentleman
Vito puts on a great performance in this fight. He was the hero of the night, really, because he entered the ring as a heavy underdog. Nobody expected Antuofermo to survive 15 rounds, let alone give Hagler such a competitive fight. But even so, it's a fact that Hagler deserved to win the decision. I thought Marvin won the bout by a margin of 9-5-1. It was quite an injustice that Hagler had to settle for a draw on this occasion.
@RapedByRepublicansII Yeah but Hagler was always not that good against a slick operator, and he boxed orthodox which gave up one of his primary advantages,Leonard was keeping him at bay with flurries and combinations , he lowkey won. Leonard also was one of the first to "steal rounds" where he outpoints rounds he's losing.
I grew up a Sugar Ray fan. This means, as you well know, that Marvelous Marvin was therefore my villain. Now, going back and watching, I am MORE and MORE a huge Hagler fan! What a fighter!!!
Awesome balance and timing, seamless. Marvellous got jobbed, classic display of ring generalship. The canvas is his best buddy. His opponent showed a lot of grit but that doesn’t win you the fight, or make it a draw. Rematch showed who the real gangster. Vito closes distance with commitment and high energy. Also knows the game on the inside. Can clutch and hit at same time. Admire his toughness
I remember watching this fight live as a teenager. Enjoyed the way Hagler boxed and moved, loved the guts of Vito coming forward, bobbing and weaving, never giving an inch. To me, it was like a Rocky vs. Creed fight! Lol. I thought Hagler won (I scored it 145-141) but wasn’t upset that it was a draw.
It was a close fight but I thought Hagler won. Vito made it an ugly fight but I thought haggler handled his bull rushes and landed the cleaner punches. Both fought hard for the distance and both were in top shape.
You are wrong & bias towards Hagler, i scored it properly and it was an even fight, i was a judge for 12 years, i learnt how to be unbiased, the most important factor.
@@Rick356A Admitting that you're a judge actually discredits your opinion because for the most part, they're the most incompetent/corrupt cunts in any sport. Hagler clearly won. Only a 'judge' could see it any other way.
Nowadays some demand that boxers jump around different weight classes to prove they're "great". Hagler was an excellent middle weight who had no problem staying at middle weight. I never saw Hagler in subpar condition and the competition he fought was very good, far better than what Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins defended against. Hagler even fought some legendary fighters, like Watts and Briscoe, before winning the title
It was Hagler’s fight to win but little Vito just got stronger as the fight went on and took all the later rounds. Underrated guy. He also deserved the decision against Minter in his next fight.
The trick with this fight is to watch it with the sound off, no announcing, and just watch for who is landing the effective punches. It is strangely similar to the Duran fight, which Hagler won easily everywhere except on the score cards. Something about Hagler, maybe his menacing look, led people not to appreciate his boxing skills. Here the first ten rounds were a sparring session. Hagler controlled the fight, jabbed very effective and also beat Antuofermo convincingly on the inside. Antuofermo barely landed a clean punch. Just look at their faces. Hagler wasn't even marked. In the first ten rounds I had Hagler winning rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. I thought Hagler outboxed Antuofermo in the 8th, but that it was close enough to be even. Cosell said Antuofermo was coming on in round 10, but watching it again and again Hagler won that round cleanly. But as with Duran, the crowd is so squarely with Antuofermo that everything he does is getting amplified. He would generally come in head first, typically eating a punch, and then get outworked on the inside. Yet the crowd was reacting to his charging in. And the way he used his head was borderline dirty. Ironic how that worked out in their second fight. So at this point unless Antuofermo dominated the last third of the fight, he cannot win. Except he didn't. Not even close. Hagler had one of his strongest rounds in the 11th, landing again and again and dominating him on the inside. Yet watch round 11 with Cosell's commentary and watch it without; two different fights, although he acknowledged that Hagler hurt him at the end of the round. Round 12 was a brawling round. Hagler landing more punches and jabs but Antuofermo was active enough that I'll give him the benefit. Round 13 was a competitive round but Hagler again outlanded Antuofermo. Even round. Round 14 was a clean win for Hagler. Another hardnose round, but Hagler clearly outlanded him and beat him on the inside. Round 15 was another brawling round and another clean round for Hagler. Landed a lot of good shots. So I had Hagler winning 12 rounds of a 15 round fight. The others were close, even rounds where I'll give to Antuofermo the benefit. The first two thirds of the fight were relatively easy for Hagler. Antuofermo turned it on in the final four rounds, where it became a brawl, but Hagler held his own and took the final two rounds, with only 12 and 13 being debatable. Point is even giving Antuofermo a shut out in rounds 11-15, which he clearly didn't get, he lost anyway. The lesson here is that Hagler was not given credit for his boxing skills, that when you are fighting a more popular fighter you cannot leave anything to the judges, and that crowd reaction and popularity affects perception.
You've got to blame Cosell for a lot of that. The guy had a remarkable propensity for talking up the fighter who wasn't winning. I remember watching him call Cooney vs. Holmes; while Holmes was kicking Cooney's ass in the later rounds, Cosell kept blabbering on about how powerful Cooney was. Here even while Hagler's outlanding Antuofermo 2-1, Cosell's exclaiming how the fight's totally turned around.
The problem was Marvin should have never let this fight go to the cards. Had he fought Vito the way he did in their second fight, there would have been no questions.
Marvelous was forced to navigate a long, hard road, finally getting his title shot only to be robbed by the judges. He never took his eyes off the prize, though.

As an Italian,I have to admit that it was the robbery of the century:Hagler won minimum 12 rounds! But few years ago he will get his vengeance TKOing Antuofermo with a huge headbutt!
Frédéric Avalli @halleck3. Hagler used a "passive" head butt. As Antuofermo came charging in Hagler dipped his head without moving forward, making it look like Vito initiated the contact.
+ David Brandel But Vito did initiate the contact. Hagler just moved so that Vito made contact with Hagler's head instead of Hagler's face. You can't blame Hagler for that.

@@Rick356A I am most definitely not wrong, yes I exaggerated a bit with 12 rounds to 3, but I did that on purpose to emphasize this injustice, most observers then and through the years agreed with me that Hagler clearly won the fight and was robbed of the title by the draw, the fight was not close to even. And someone on TH-cam telling me of being a judge for years doesn’t really tell me anything, because even if it is true, we have seen in countless occasions that so called “professional “ judges can give horrendous decisions that are roundly condemned by most others that saw the same fight.

I doubt he was a professional boxing judge as he alludes (maybe judged pet poodle shows?) anyone can claim to be anything on youtube, and as you say, nearly all observers saw this fight as a clear win to Hagler. Vito Antuofermo never had as many fans as Hagler, but Antuofermo won that night. It was close. Vito was a top contender for years, but could not get a world tile shot, yet Hagler kept saying he was being shut out by boxing promoters. Vito was a top contender by the time Hagler turned pro.
Hagler 146, Antuofermo 140. This wasn't even close. I'm not sure how those two judges gave Antuofermo so many rounds, unless you give a fighter rounds for jamming his head in his opponent's face and wrestling him backwards.

@@Rick356A NO one unbiased could've had this even. Look at what the boxing experts say on this fight. Hagler was robbed and it's well known and accepted.
This fight so hard to call. Have not seen it in years. The 13 round I actually thought Hagler was hurt and reeling. Never see that. . Vito can’t punch like hearns and Mugabi , but he was relentless. Hagler dominated early on , and was obviously more skilled , but he allowed Vito to make it a war of attrition. Tough fight to score. Thought Hagler won but was real close . Of course the marvelous one had to fight Vito again , and beat him. I’m watching that fight next. Hagler fought everybody. His chin was granite. Complete package.
All these years later, after hearing so many stories about this fight, I finally get to watch it! To me, if this was a non title fight, I'd give it to Hagler, based on points or rounds. But being that this was a title fight, I think Hagler didn't do enough to win it. Being generous, I gave it 9-6 Hagler, but when you're fighting the champ, you really got to take it to him, and Hagler didn't.
The idea that you have to take the title from the champion nullifies any purpose of scoring round by round. You either scored the fight 9-6 Hagler or you didn't. If you were being generous in giving him rounds then you weren't rendering an honest score. The tribal nonsense of "taking the title" is ridiculous. It's either scored correctly or it's not. And in your case you're basically saying you didn't score it correctly.
@@StormFive its always been an unwritten rule thst you have to thoroughly beat the champion, and hagler didnt. Even the rounds i gave Hagler, he didnt dominate them like we're accustomed to. Props to Vito. He gave possibly the best middleweight to ever step in the ring a good run for his money.
Way to give the white man a participation trophy.

MMH THE GREATEST MIDDLEWEIGHT EVER.
Hagler is one of the best of all time no matter when he won the title.
He and Hagler became really good friends later.
Corey Roberts, Marvin hagler, was the greatest, middleweight, of all-times!!
That's incredible memory of one of the best ever..
Marvin was class act.
Yes take nothing away from vito he was extremely tough and awkward but for my money hagler won
First time i saw this fight since watching it live 1979. Good fight.
R.I.P. Marvelous
Robbery, Hagler clearly won this! The same as fight with Leonard! Marvelous the best ever! Cheers from Sinaloa Mexico!
I find the Leonard fight hard to score, I find it a draw, think hagler over trained for it
@RapedByRepublicansII it's a good point, scoring system seems unfair at times.
Agreed Javier
@@chriso1585 ,
@RapedByRepublicansII Yeah but Hagler was always not that good against a slick operator, and he boxed orthodox which gave up one of his primary advantages,Leonard was keeping him at bay with flurries and combinations , he lowkey won. Leonard also was one of the first to "steal rounds" where he outpoints rounds he's losing.
The days before PPV, 3 of the best title fights ever free.

Vito & Duran were the only ones to take Marvin to 15 rounds. No easy task
And Howard, that "right lead" Hagler keeps throwing is called a jab. He's southpaw.
Surprised people liked this ignorant comment. That is still a right lead. Like how orthodox throw the lead left hand.
denbb shut up he hell up!! Cosell forgot more about boxing than you will ever know
Hagler is leading with his right hand no matter if he is a southpaw. Hagler was one of the greats.
I grew up a Sugar Ray fan. This means, as you well know, that Marvelous Marvin was therefore my villain. Now, going back and watching, I am MORE and MORE a huge Hagler fan! What a fighter!!!
Hagler never had Antuofermo in any serious trouble. I do think Hagler deserved to get the decision, but not by much.

This fight wasn't close. Hagler lost four rounds at the most.
This wouldn’t be the last time Marvin got screwed by the judges
You are wrong & bias towards Hagler, i scored it properly and it was an even fight, i was a judge for 12 years, i learnt how to be unbiased, the most important factor.
@@Rick356A Admitting that you're a judge actually discredits your opinion because for the most part, they're the most incompetent/corrupt cunts in any sport.
Hagler clearly won. Only a 'judge' could see it any other way.
@@Rick356A can you explain the leonard fight then how one judge had it 118 - 110 for leonard while the other 2 had it 115 - 113?
Nowadays some demand that boxers jump around different weight classes to prove they're "great". Hagler was an excellent middle weight who had no problem staying at middle weight. I never saw Hagler in subpar condition and the competition he fought was very good, far better than what Roy Jones Jr. and Bernard Hopkins defended against. Hagler even fought some legendary fighters, like Watts and Briscoe, before winning the title
This shows his dedication, commitment, and determination.
15 rounds Champions distance! Bring it back.
It was Hagler’s fight to win but little Vito just got stronger as the fight went on and took all the later rounds. Underrated guy. He also deserved the decision against Minter in his next fight.
Hagler was robbed
@@UpChuckTheBoogie Agreed. Both fighters fought well but Hagler definitely won this fight.
Great fight.
This was a great fight.
It sounds like your commentary is about the Hagler/Leonard fight.
The problem was Marvin should have never let this fight go to the cards. Had he fought Vito the way he did in their second fight, there would have been no questions.
iha asc, Exactly! I couldn't had said it better myself.
I agree 100%
Marvelous was forced to navigate a long, hard road, finally getting his title shot only to be robbed by the judges. He never took his eyes off the prize, though.

However, there were some very tough rounds to score that could've gone to either fighter which brings me to my score which is 143-142, 8rds to 7 for Hagler.
I have it 8 rounds to 7 for Vito. Body shots count as much as head shots.
I had Hagler 7-4-4, but Marvin was not quite himself. He used this stick and move style to defeat Bennie Briscoe in August 78, but Vito had more success getting inside. Although I think he lost, much respect to Vito for a great fight.

Hagler dominated
early on , and was obviously more skilled , but he allowed Vito to make it a war of attrition.
Then what happened when he fought leanard?
Perfectly said! I agree with you - the fight wasn’t a highway robbery.
Maybe what i saw in those 9 rounds as a fan, professional judges saw something else. Either way, Hagler did't do enough to win the fight to them, only treaded water.
