Armando was so special to me, after listening to Santana since the 70’s, I loved his power, speed, and nuance, he punctuated Santana’s music perfectly.

i cant believe all these people insulting Armando. This is a man well in his 80s playing so of course he is not going to play the licks he use to when he was younger. Armando still has his touch for the conga, he was , is and always will be one of the most important pioneers of the conga. He will always hold a legacy. He will probably out live all of us so watch what you say.

Without Armando Peraza, Mongo Santamaria, Tata Guines, Chano Pozo , Patato Valdez, the tradition of Conga Drum playing in the US may not have existed. They brought the traditional styles with them and passed it on to new generation of players in NYC and California. There's no present without past and they represented a significant transitional period in the history of drumming.

You guys need to understand that what you are seeing is a man past his prime he looks to be in his late 70's here maybe 80 this is not a young man here. If you take the time to listen to what he's doing you would recognize how special this is. Imagine him in his 20's or 30's playing with strength and with hands that are not damaged by the effects of arthritis.

When I was in High School back in 1957 in Southern California, I saw Armando Peraza play congas for George Shearing at a concert at Loyola University. He was absolutly amazing back then. I have always been able to find records, cassettes & CDs that he was the percussonist on. I'm glad to see he is still going strong and still amazing with the skins after all these years. God bless you Armando and thank you for posting this on TH-cam.

I don't have time to go back and read the haters but I'm at this page because I was watching an interview with Carlos Santana and he's saying Armando Peraza is THE MAN. Well that's good enough for me. If I hear something I don't understand, I'm just going to go ahead and assume it's my ignorance and not Armando Peraza.

One word: LEGENDARY. A lot of how and what we play is thanks to master percussionist like Armando, Chano and more. I met and saw him play at 86 years old at a drum clinic with Raul Rekow and Karl Perazza in California. They both defer to him and attributed many of their learned skills to his legendary style. In fact Karl said "no one" combines Bongos and Congas like Armando. I spoke with him and he was humble, gracious and willing to give a beginner advice. Viva Armando y su buena nota!

Man! I had the honor to meet this legendary master of precussion twice. The second time was in San Mateo of all places Marshall's, we were both shopping for new sneakers. when I got the courage to speak to him, he was so gracious and humble that we sat down and talked for almost an hour about food, baseball, and, of course, music. Carlos said that he recruited Armando because Africa spoke through his hands. He is one of the greatest congueros of all times. I will never forget his humanity and his kindness....that is priceless. Que Dios te bendiga Armando.

What a find for an aspiring congero! The most impressive thing about this performance - to me - is the triumph of lyricism and musicality over a purely raw display of power and chops!!! These You Tube videos are changing my life. Senor Peraza's solo on "Gitano" from Santana's Amigos album may be the best conga solo I have ever heard - A truly inspired and awesome piece of work.

You're absolutely on point, and let's not forget to include Francisco Aguabella & Cándido Camero to that legendary list of Cuban tumbadores all-stars. Throughout the 40's, 50's & 60's these Cuban legends were in great demand not just here in the U.S. but also in Europe & Japan, along with Machito & his Afro-Cubans Orquesta & Machito's brother in-law the great Latin jazz trailblazer, Mario Bauzá.

arouttenberg, you are so dead on right, i agree with you 900% about how armando gets a true sound out of the conga or bongo, almost like he gets into the drum. And including Giovanni Hidalgo, i happen to know he was a mentor to Raul Rekow back in the day. and of course Mr.Peraza was an influence to so many other latin percusionists in those days. So im with you all the way. Goza como gozo yo..ARMANDO!!!

unbelievable stuff....kinda reminds me of some of the great American jazz drummers (Blakey, Roach etc.) in that melody is always present in his phrasing and inside the riffing. So it has movement and it sounds like a song because you can sing his ideas, and those melodies house the link to all the that storied tradition and knowledge that Mr Peraza carries. Bravo!

  • @1245102

I especially love the part where Armando grooves on the congas and the bongos at the same time. It looks easy to play but God, when you go to try it without having any inspiration of the true rythms of Rumba, salsa, son montuno, forget it, there is no way. Armando Peraza definitely paved the way for so many latin generations and inspired so many and yes it definitely includes me. Que viva el espiritu de Armando Peraza!!! Sabroso!!

i should refrase, armando was an influence on giovanni and others, mr.peraza might have very well mentored all these people for all i know, it would not come to me as a surprise. but Armandos legacy will forever remain alive and will be carried on by the percussionists of today, i am sure of it. I even heared a drum student of mine who is only 15 years old and he says man listen to this bongo solo by armando in the song "american gypsy" man,In peraza we trust.

All the haters in this comment thread clearly know nothing of the batá rhythms Armando is replicating. He's essentially covering, solo, the parts of three drummers playing on double-headed drums. It's not supposed to sound 'linear'. Every rhythm in popular Latin music exists in it's purest most transcendent form in the toques of the batá used in the Lukumí religion. Like Fela Kuti said, "Who no know, go know".

In 1979 I was playing and hanging out in Redwood City, some drummers I knew had an extra ticket to a Giants vs. Atlanta afternoon game at the 'stick. I ended up sitting next to Armando and got him to tell me stories of playing ball in Cuba as a teenager. He had that same look in his eyes talking about baseball as when he is about to flip the accent back on itself over a phrase... suavecito

In the interview part of this production, Mr. Cohen, the producer stated that Mr. Peraza, when this video was made, was 90 YEARS OLD ! Now, let see if the foolish youth that criticizes Mr. Peraza can last that long, lest be a Master of the instrument. We must show respect to the Elders, lest we stop the continuity of tradition. Only Masters, elders can teach the youth.
